We report results from in vivo measurements, using oxygen isotope discrimination techniques, of fluxes through the alternative and cytochrome respiratory pathways in thermogenic plant tissue, the floral receptacle of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). Fluxes through both pathways were measured in thermoregulating flowers undergoing varying degrees of thermogenesis in response to ambient temperature. Significant increases in alternative pathway flux were found in lotus receptacles with temperatures 16 degrees C to 20 degrees C above ambient, but not in those with lesser amounts of heating. Alternative pathway flux in the hottest receptacles was 75% of the total respiratory flux. In contrast, fluxes through the cytochrome pathway did not change significantly during thermogenesis. These data support the hypothesis that increased flux through the alternative pathway is responsible for heating in the lotus and that it is unlikely that uncoupling proteins, which would have produced increased fluxes through the cytochrome pathway, contribute significantly to heating in this tissue. Comparisons of actual flux, with capacity determined using inhibitors, suggested that the alternative pathway was operating at close to maximum capacity in heating tissues of lotus. However, in nonheating tissues the inhibitor data significantly overestimated the alternative pathway flux. This confirms that isotopic measurements are necessary for accurate determination of fluxes through the two pathways.  相似文献

Plant invasions cause biodiversity loss and degradation in ecosystems worldwide. The invasive species involved may be introduced, or native invaders, and controlling them is a major global challenge. Here, we highlight an emerging role for native parasitic plants in suppressing invasive species, thus aiding in restoration of affected habitats. Compelling empirical evidence is provided by three study systems located in Central Europe, southern Australia and eastern China. Further cases of parasitism of invasive plants have been recorded across five continents. We propose including the interactions between parasitic and invasive plants into the theoretical framework of the biotic resistance hypothesis concerning generalist interactions between invaders and native biota. Among parasitic plants, numerous root hemiparasites, mistletoes and parasitic vines show low host specificity and exert substantial negative effects on their hosts. These parasitic plants may interfere with key traits of invaders such as symbiotic nitrogen fixation or clonal propagation which provide them with competitive advantage over native species. We contend that some parasitic plants may present a cost‐effective environmentally sustainable component of invasion management schemes. Therefore, we encourage exploration of this potential and the development of methods for practical applications in ecological restoration and nature conservation.  相似文献

Agriculture and development transform forest ecosystems to human‐modified landscapes. Decades of research in ecology have generated myriad concepts for the appropriate management of these landscapes. Yet, these concepts are often contradictory and apply at different spatial scales, making the design of biodiversity‐friendly landscapes challenging. Here, we combine concepts with empirical support to design optimal landscape scenarios for forest‐dwelling species. The supported concepts indicate that appropriately sized landscapes should contain ≥ 40% forest cover, although higher percentages are likely needed in the tropics. Forest cover should be configured with c. 10% in a very large forest patch, and the remaining 30% in many evenly dispersed smaller patches and semi‐natural treed elements (e.g. vegetation corridors). Importantly, the patches should be embedded in a high‐quality matrix. The proposed landscape scenarios represent an optimal compromise between delivery of goods and services to humans and preserving most forest wildlife, and can therefore guide forest preservation and restoration strategies.  相似文献

Background: Arundinarieae are a large tribe of temperate woody bamboos for which phylogenetics are poorly understood because of limited taxon sampling and lack of informative characters.

Aims: This study assessed phylogenetic relationships, origins and classification of Arundinarieae.

Methods: DNA sequences (plastid trnL-F; nuclear ITS) were used for parsimony and Bayesian inference including 41 woody bamboo taxa. Divergence dates were estimated using a relaxed Bayesian clock.

Results: Arundinarieae were monophyletic but their molecular divergence was low compared to the tropical Bambuseae. Ancestors of the Arundinarieae lineage were estimated to have diverged from the other bamboos 23 (15–30) million years ago (Mya). However, the Arundinarieae radiation occurred 10 (6–16) Mya compared to 18 (11–25) Mya for the tropical Bambuseae. Some groups could be defined within Arundinarieae, but they do not correspond to recognised subtribes such as Arundinariinae or Shibataeinae.

Conclusions: Arundinarieae are a relatively ancient bambusoid lineage that underwent a rapid radiation in the late Miocene. The radiation coincides with the continental collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian Plates. Arundinarieae are distributed primarily in East Asia and the Himalayas to northern Southeast Asia. It is unknown whether they were present in Asia long before their radiation, but we believe recent dispersal is a more likely scenario.  相似文献

The relationships between heat production, alternative oxidase(AOX) pathway flux, AOX protein, and carbohydrates during floraldevelopment in Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) were investigated.Three distinct physiological phases were identified: pre-thermogenic,thermogenic, and post-thermogenic. The shift to thermogenicactivity was associated with a rapid, 10-fold increase in AOXprotein. Similarly, a rapid decrease in AOX protein occurredpost-thermogenesis. This synchronicity between AOX protein andthermogenic activity contrasts with other thermogenic plantswhere AOX protein increases some days prior to heating. AOXprotein in thermogenic receptacles was significantly higherthan in post-thermogenic and leaf tissues. Stable oxygen isotopemeasurements confirmed that the increased respiratory flux supportingthermogenesis was largely via the AOX, with little or no contributionfrom the cytochrome oxidase pathway. During the thermogenicphase, no significant relationship was found between AOX proteincontent and either heating or AOX flux, suggesting that regulationis likely to be post-translational. Further, no evidence ofsubstrate limitation was found; starch accumulated during theearly stages of floral development, peaking in thermogenic receptacles,before declining by 89% in post-thermogenic receptacles. Whilstcoarse regulation of AOX flux occurs via protein synthesis,the ability to thermoregulate probably involves precise regulationof AOX protein, most probably by effectors such as -keto acids. Endothermic heating of floral tissues and even thermoregulation is known to occur in a number of plant species across a wide taxonomic range. The mechanisms by which flowers heat, however, are only just beginning to be understood, and even less is known about how heating is regulated in response to changes in ambient temperature. We have recently demonstrated that the alternative pathway of respiration, in which the alternative oxidase (AOX) rather than cytochrome C (COX) acts as terminal electron acceptor, is responsible for heat generation in one thermoregulating species, the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). In the March issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany we further demonstrated that AOX-mediated heat production in this species is regulated at both the level of gene expression and also post-translationally. Similarly, AOX has also been implicated in heat production in other thermogenic species. Hyalella is the only epigean freshwater amphipod present in Chile . H. chiloensis, H. costera and H. kochi are here described and illustrated. H. kochi is distributed in highland areas of the Andes in northern Chile; it is characterized by a short ramus on uropod 3 and a hammer-shaped gnathopod 1. H. costera and H. chiloensis are present in lowland areas, the latter restricted to the southern part of the country. These two species have a long ramus on uropod 3, but they differ in the shape and length of the palp on maxilla 1, the setation of peraeopods 3, 4, and telson. The presence in Chile of H. fossamancinii Cavalieri, 1959 is also reported here.  相似文献

The effects of trawling disturbance on a soft-sediment system were investigated with a manipulative field experiment in an area that had been closed to shrimp trawling activities for 20 years. The area was also chosen for its weak natural physical agents i.e. no scouring of sediments by storm events or tidal flow, allowing a quantitative assessment of the effects of trawling on the benthic fauna and geochemical properties of the soft substrate.The study examined the ambient spatial and temporal patterns of sedimentological variables and benthic species abundances over a time interval of 16 months for both the reference and the trawl stations before dragging the trawling gear over the predetermined trawl sites. Shifts in the patterns of the benthic infauna and geochemical variables were identified by the post-trawl samples that were collected at both the reference and trawl stations over the next 6 months. Post-trawl changes in the bottom topography did not translate into changes in the vertical profile of the sedimentological variables. Chlorophyll a content of the trawled surface sediments was significantly elevated immediately after the trawling event in comparison to the reference concentrations.Immediately after the trawling disturbance, numbers of species, species abundance and diversity decreased in the trawled area in comparison to the reference area. Sensitive species were found to be the bivalves; Ennucula annulata, Hampson, Thyasira flexuosa (Montagu), and Yoldia sapotilla (Gould), and polychaetes; Chaetozonecf.setosa Malmgren, Anobothrus gracilis(Malmgren), Euchone incolor Hartman, and Terebellides atlantis Williams. In contrast, the carnivorous nemertea, Cerebratulus lacteus Verrill, was the resistant species to field manipulations on account of its predatory behavior; highly effective in seeking out freshly dead (dying) organisms and its active migration. Multivariate analysis confirmed the changes in the trawled community structure immediately following the trawling event and differences in the recovery patterns 6 months thereafter. Although the trawling disturbance was one of low frequency and intensity compared to commercial operations, the biological variables studied indicated that successional processes in this soft-bottom community were altered, at least for a short period, in response to the trawling disturbance.  相似文献
