Burst swimming speeds of mackerel, Scomber scombrus L. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Burst swimming speeds were measured in mackerel 0.275–0.380 m long by filming newly caught fish, first released into a large shore-sited tank, using a high-speed cine camera and real time TV camera. The highest speed was 5.50 m s−1 or 18 body length per second ( b.l . s−1 ) in a 0.305 m long mackerel at 12° C. The recorded maximum tail beat frequency of 18 Hz agrees well with 19 Hz predicted from the measured contraction time of 0.026 s for the anterior lateral swimming muscle. The stride length was close to 1 B.L.; the power, calculated from the drag, was 4.53 W, and, calculated from the muscle used, was 5.07 W; all suggesting that the mackerel is swimming close to its physiological limit. 相似文献

Forest ecosystems world-wide are being subjected to invasion by organisms representing all domains of life. Here we use a combined aboveground-belowground approach to provide a conceptual framework for assessing how forests respond to biological invasions. We first address mechanisms by which invasive plants and aboveground and belowground consumers impact on forests, and highlight that although we have a growing understanding of the determinants of the effects of invasive plants, for invasive consumers we have yet to move from a series of iconic case studies to the development of general principles. We also address the effects of invasive biota in the context of the drivers of invasion, co-invasion and invasional meltdown, the issue of simultaneous species gains and losses, and forest restoration and recovery post-invasion. We then highlight areas that would benefit from further work, particularly regarding underlying mechanisms, determinants of context-dependency of invader effects, and linkages between causes and consequences of invasion. In concluding, we emphasize that biological invaders have the potential for large-scale and long-term impacts on forest processes, and consideration of these impacts in an aboveground-belowground context will enable better prediction of future responses of forests to invaders and their management as well as of restoration efforts. 相似文献

Objective: This study was designed to determine whether a community sample of obese mothers with young children used different feeding styles compared with a matched sample of normal‐weight mothers. Four aspects of feeding style were assessed: emotional feeding, instrumental feeding (using food as a reward), prompting/encouragement to eat, and control over eating. Research Methods and Procedures: Participants were from 214 families with same‐sex twins; 100 families in which both parents were overweight or obese and 114 in which both parents were normal weight or lean. Results: We found that obese mothers were no more likely than normal‐weight mothers to offer food to deal with emotional distress, use food as a form of reward, or encourage the child to eat more than was wanted. The obese and normal‐weight mothers did differ on “control”; obese mothers reported significantly less control over their children's intake, and this was seen for both first‐born and second‐born twins. Twin analyses showed that these differences were not in response to children's genetic propensities, because monozygotic correlations were no greater than dizygotic correlations for maternal feeding style. Discussion: These results suggest that the stereotype of the obese mother, who uses food in nonnutritive ways so that her child also becomes obese, is more likely to be myth than fact. However, the results raise the possibility that lack of control of food intake might contribute to the emergence of differences in weight. 相似文献

Human clinical and psychophysical observations suggest that the taste
system is able to compensate for losses in peripheral nerve input, since
patients do not commonly report decrements in whole mouth taste following
chorda tympani nerve damage or anesthesia. Indeed, neurophysiological data
from the rat nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) suggests that a release of
inhibition (disinhibition) may occur centrally following chorda tympani
nerve anesthesia. Our purpose was to study this possibility further. We
recorded from 59 multi- and single- unit taste-responsive sites in the rat
NST before, during and after recovery from chorda tympani nerve anesthesia.
During anesthesia, average anterior tongue responses were eliminated but no
compensatory increases in palatal or posterior tongue responses were
observed. However, six individual sites displayed increased taste
responsiveness during anesthesia. The average increase was 32.9%.
Therefore, disinhibition of taste responses was observed, but infrequently
and to a small degree in the NST At a subset of sites, chorda
tympani-mediated responses decreased while greater superficial
petrosal-mediated responses remained the same during anesthesia. Since this
effect was accompanied by a decrease in spontaneous activity, we propose
that taste compensation may result in part by a change in signal-to-noise
ratio at a subset of sites.
