The effect of a combination of aspirin and fish oil on eicosanoids was studied. Four subjects were given 37.5 mg aspirin orally, and 6 weeks later they received a natural, stable fish oil daily for 1 week before taking the same single dose of aspirin. Blood samples for determination of whole blood production of eicosanoids were taken before and after each experimental period. Serum thromboxane A(2)was decreased by 40% (P<0.05) after aspirin alone, but by 62% (P<0.01) after fish oil + aspirin. Serum prostacyclin (measured as 6-keto PGF(1a)) was decreased by aspirin in both cases. The sum of 6-keto PGF(1a)and its equipotent fish oil-derived analogue Delta(17)-6-keto PGF(1a)was reduced after aspirin intake (55%, NS), but after fish oil + aspirin the reduction was smaller (33%, NS). Leukotriene B(4)was increased by 19% (P<0.05) after aspirin, and decreased by 69% (P<0.05) after fish oil + aspirin. A combination of stable fish oil and aspirin thus improves the eicosanoid pattern more than aspirin alone. 相似文献

The oldest early Mesolithic settlements found so far (i.e. 8600 b.p.) in the interior of northern Sweden, in the province of Norrbotten, have been discovered through the application of a model simulating glacio-isostatic land uplift. The objective of this study was to investigate, through pollen and charred particle analyses, vegetation composition and the influence of man on vegetation and fire pattern in the vicinity of two of these early settlements. Early Holocene vegetation was characterised by Betula, Hippophaë and Salix-species, but no initial impact by hunter-gatherers on vegetation was detected. Subsequently Betula and Pinus became dominant but abrupt changes in the tree layer followed, Poaceae, Hippophaë and Salix-species increased, and Humulus occurred. These changes, which were synchronous with dates of archaeological findings at the settlements, indicated local vegetation changes caused by man. The relationship between these changes and fire was, however, subtle. Eventually Pinus forests became dominant and human impact on vegetation became less apparent. It is concluded that the impact of early Mesolithic hunter-gatherers on vegetation was detectable, but that their effect on fire pattern was difficult to evaluate. Further, we show that the glacio-isostatic land uplift must be considered in the search for Mesolithic settlements in areas previously covered by the Weichselian Ice, and that the process has influenced the biological archives through re-deposition of material. 相似文献

Background
Facilitation is a promising implementation intervention, which requires theory-informed evaluation. This paper presents an exemplar of a multi-country realist process evaluation that was embedded in the first international randomised controlled trial evaluating two types of facilitation for implementing urinary continence care recommendations. We aimed to uncover what worked (and did not work), for whom, how, why and in what circumstances during the process of implementing the facilitation interventions in practice.Methods
This realist process evaluation included theory formulation, theory testing and refining. Data were collected in 24 care home sites across four European countries. Data were collected over four time points using multiple qualitative methods: observation (372 h), interviews with staff (n?=?357), residents (n?=?152), next of kin (n?=?109) and other stakeholders (n?=?128), supplemented by facilitator activity logs. A combined inductive and deductive data analysis process focused on realist theory refinement and testing.Results
The content and approach of the two facilitation programmes prompted variable opportunities to align and realign support with the needs and expectations of facilitators and homes. This influenced their level of confidence in fulfilling the facilitator role and ability to deliver the intervention as planned. The success of intervention implementation was largely dependent on whether sites prioritised their involvement in both the study and the facilitation programme. In contexts where the study was prioritised (including release of resources) and where managers and staff support was sustained, this prompted collective engagement (as an attitude and action). Internal facilitators’ (IF) personal characteristics and abilities, including personal and formal authority, in combination with a supportive environment prompted by managers triggered the potential for learning over time. Learning over time resulted in a sense of confidence and personal growth, and enactment of the facilitation role, which resulted in practice changes.Conclusion
The scale and multi-country nature of this study provided a novel context to conduct one of the few trial embedded realist-informed process evaluations. In addition to providing an explanatory account of implementation processes, a conceptual platform for future facilitation research is presented. Finally, a realist-informed process evaluation framework is outlined, which could inform future research of this nature.Trial registration

Temperature and rainfall data for the winter months December through March in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas were related to subsequent summer wheat stem rust severity in Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas and Minnesota for the period 1904–1960.Kansas winter temperatures and rainfall data were not related to rust severity in the states northward.Although precise weather rules for rust epiphytotics were not found,these preliminary analyses indicated that there might be a causal relation between March precipitation in Texas and Oklahoma and subsequent wheat stem rust outbreaks in May in Kansas and June and July in Nebraska, the Dakotas and Minnesota. 相似文献

Sucrose-rich diets have repeatedly been observed to have co-carcinogenic actions in colon and liver of rats and to increase the number of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) induced aberrant crypt foci in rat colon. To investigate a possible interaction between sucrose and IQ on the genotoxicity in rat liver and colon, we gave Big Blue rats a diet containing sucrose (0%, 3.45% or 13.4% w/w) and/or IQ (70 ppm) for a period of 3 weeks. Sucrose and IQ increased the mutation frequency in the colon. The effect of combined treatments with IQ and sucrose on the mutation frequencies was additive indicating that sucrose and IQ act independently. This was supported by the mutation spectra where sucrose expands the background mutations in the colon, whereas IQ, in other studies, more specifically has induced G:C --> T:A transversions. In the liver IQ increased the mutation frequency, whereas addition of sucrose reduced the effect of IQ in a dose-dependent manner. The level of bulky DNA adducts in liver and colon was increased in animals exposed to either sucrose or IQ. In animals exposed to IQ, addition of sucrose had marginal effects on the level of bulky DNA adducts. Markers of oxidative damage and DNA repair were generally unaffected by the treatments. In conclusion, sucrose and IQ in the diet induced mutations in the colon by independent mechanisms, whereas an interaction was observed in liver leading to a decrease in mutations by the combined treatment. 相似文献

A major knowledge gap exists in understanding dispersal potential of ground-dwelling arthropods, especially in forest ecosystems. Movement of the ground-dwelling arthropod community was quantified using a novel mark-capture technique in which three different colored fluorescent powders in two separate mixtures were applied to the floor of a deciduous forest in concentric bands 3, 8, and 15 m from the center of 30 × 30 m experimental plots. The majority (67.1%) of ground-dwelling arthropods did not cross a colored band when fluorescents were mixed with protein powder in 2014. However, when mixed with sand in 2015, 77.3% of captured arthropods were marked with fluorescent powder, with the majority of individuals crossing one band (41.2%), suggesting limited dispersal by most individuals in the community. Only 2.8% and 15.0% of arthropods crossed all three bands in 2014 and 2015, respectively, which further indicates that individuals have limited dispersal. Responses were taxon-specific, and a high proportion of some arthropods such as millipedes and harvestmen crossed two or three bands. Limited dispersal by most individuals may have important implications for the structure and distribution of ground-dwelling arthropod communities, as well as their responses to natural or anthropogenic disturbances. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of this novel technique for self-marking and capturing individuals in the field to investigate dispersal of ground-dwelling arthropods. 相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are neurodegenerative diseases that are characterized by intra-neuronal inclusions of Lewy bodies in distinct brain regions. These inclusions consist mainly of aggregated α-synuclein (α-syn) protein. The present study used immunoprecipitation combined with nanoflow liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to high resolution electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-FTICR-MS/MS) to determine known and novel isoforms of α-syn in brain tissue homogenates. N-terminally acetylated full-length α-syn (Ac-α-syn?????) and two N-terminally acetylated C-terminally truncated forms of α-syn (Ac-α-syn????? and Ac-α-syn?????) were found. The different forms of α-syn were further studied by Western blotting in brain tissue homogenates from the temporal cortex Brodmann area 36 (BA36) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex BA9 derived from controls, patients with DLB and PD with dementia (PDD). Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Dragon) was exposed to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2), alone (1995) or in combination with two levels of increased ozone (O3) (1994) or increased irrigation (1996) during three successive growing seasons as part of the EU ESPACE‐wheat programme and conducted in open‐top chambers (OTCs) and ambient air (AA) plots at Östad, 50 km north‐east of Göteborg, Sweden. Doubling the CO2 concentration had a positive effect on grain yield in all 3 years (+21, +7 and +11%, respectively), although only statistically significant in 1994. That year was characterised by a warm and dry summer in comparison with 1995 and 1996, in which the summers were more humid and typical for south‐west Sweden. In 1994, the CO2‐induced increase in grain yield was associated with an increase in the duration of the green leaf area, a positive effect on straw yield and on the number of ears per square metre and a negative effect (?13%) on grain protein concentration. Harvest index was unaffected by the elevated CO2 concentration. The only statistically significant effect of elevated CO2 in 1995 was a decrease in the grain protein concentration (?11% in both CO2 concentrations), and in 1996 an increase (+21%) in the straw yield. In 1996 the soil water potential was less negative in elevated CO2, which is likely to reflect a lower water consumption of these plants. Addition of extra O3 significantly affected the grain yield (?6 and ?10%, respectively) and the 1 000‐grain weight negatively (?3 and ?6%). Statistically significant interactions between CO2 and O3 were obtained for the number of ears per unit area and for the 1 000‐grain weight. The 1 000‐grain weight was negatively affected by O3 in low CO2, but remained unaffected in the high CO2 treatment. There was a significant decrease (?6%) in the grain protein concentration induced by elevated irrigation. The chambers, compared with AA plots, had a positive effect on plant development and on grain yield in all 3 years. 相似文献
