State and national standards call for teaching evolution concepts as early as kindergarten, which provides motivation to continue
developing science instruction and curriculum for young learners. The importance of addressing students’ folk theories regarding
science justifies teaching evolution early in K-12 education. In this project, we developed, implemented, and researched standards-based
lessons to teach elements of evolution (speciation and adaption) to kindergarteners and second graders. Our lessons attended
to the students’ prior knowledge, and utilized inquiry and modeling to teach and assess their ability to recognize patterns
of similarity and differences among organisms. Using their products and comments as evidence, it was apparent the students
were able to communicate recognition of patterns and effectively apply their knowledge in near transfer activities, indicating
they achieved our learning objectives. This provides support for teaching evolution concepts in the early grades and evidence
of the ability for young children to effectively engage in supported inquiry and modeling for learning science. 相似文献

Müllerian mimicry is a classic example of adaptation, yet Müller's original theory does not account for the diversity often observed in mimicry rings. Here, we aimed to assess how well classical Müllerian mimicry can account for the colour polymorphism found in chemically defended Oreina leaf beetles by using field data and laboratory assays of predator behaviour. We also evaluated the hypothesis that thermoregulation can explain diversity between Oreina mimicry rings. We found that frequencies of each colour morph were positively correlated among species, a critical prediction of Müllerian mimicry. Predators learned to associate colour with chemical defences. Learned avoidance of the green morph of one species protected green morphs of another species. Avoidance of blue morphs was completely generalized to green morphs, but surprisingly, avoidance of green morphs was less generalized to blue morphs. This asymmetrical generalization should favour green morphs: indeed, green morphs persist in blue communities, whereas blue morphs are entirely excluded from green communities. We did not find a correlation between elevation and coloration, rejecting thermoregulation as an explanation for diversity between mimicry rings. Biased predation could explain within‐community diversity in warning coloration, providing a solution to a long‐standing puzzle. We propose testable hypotheses for why asymmetric generalization occurs, and how predators maintain the predominance of blue morphs in a community, despite asymmetric generalization. 相似文献

Recent analyses of human-associated bacterial diversity have categorized individuals into ‘enterotypes’ or clusters based on the abundances of key bacterial genera in the gut microbiota. There is a lack of consensus, however, on the analytical basis for enterotypes and on the interpretation of these results. We tested how the following factors influenced the detection of enterotypes: clustering methodology, distance metrics, OTU-picking approaches, sequencing depth, data type (whole genome shotgun (WGS) vs.16S rRNA gene sequence data), and 16S rRNA region. We included 16S rRNA gene sequences from the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) and from 16 additional studies and WGS sequences from the HMP and MetaHIT. In most body sites, we observed smooth abundance gradients of key genera without discrete clustering of samples. Some body habitats displayed bimodal (e.g., gut) or multimodal (e.g., vagina) distributions of sample abundances, but not all clustering methods and workflows accurately highlight such clusters. Because identifying enterotypes in datasets depends not only on the structure of the data but is also sensitive to the methods applied to identifying clustering strength, we recommend that multiple approaches be used and compared when testing for enterotypes. 相似文献

A characteristic feature of the sperm P1 protamines of eutherian mammals is
the constant presence of six to nine cysteine residues per molecule. During
spermiogenesis these residues become oxidized to form a three-dimensional
network of disulfide bridges between, and within, protamine molecules in
the sperm chromatin. This covalent cross linking strongly stabilizes
eutherian sperm nuclei. In contrast, protamines sequenced from teleost
fish, birds, monotremes, and marsupials all lack cysteine residues and
their sperm nuclei, without the stabilizing cross links, are easily
decondensed in vitro. We have now found that one genus of tiny, shrewlike
dasyurid marsupials, the Planigales, possess P1 protamines containing five
to six cysteine residues. These residues appear to have evolved since the
divergence of Planigales from other members of the family Dasyuridae, such
as the marsupial mouse, Sminthopsis crassicaudata. We believe this
constitutes a case of convergent evolution in a subfamily of dasyurid
marsupials toward the cysteine-rich eutherian form of sperm protamine P1.

Evidence for independent recruitment of zeta-crystallin/quinone reductase (CRYZ) as a crystallin in camelids and hystricomorph rodents 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
Zeta-crystallin/quinone reductase (CRYZ) is an NADPH oxidoreductase
expressed at very high levels in the lenses of two groups of mammals:
camelids and some hystricomorph rodents. It is also expressed at very low
levels in all other species tested. Comparative analysis of the mechanisms
mediating the high expression of this enzyme/crystallin in the lens of the
Ilama (Lama guanacoe) and the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) provided
evidence for independent recruitment of this enzyme as a lens crystallin in
both species and allowed us to elucidate for the first time the mechanism
of lens recruitment of an enzyme- crystallin. The data presented here show
that in both species such recruitment most likely occurred through the
generation of new lens promoters from nonfunctional intron sequences by the
accumulation of point mutations and/or small deletions and insertions.
These results further support the idea that recruitment of CRYZ resulted
from an adaptive process in which the high expression of CRYZ in the lens
provides some selective advantage rather than from a purely neutral
evolutionary process.

Marine benthic diatoms excrete large quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), both as a function of their motility system and as a response to environmental conditions. Diatom EPS consists predominantly of carbohydrate‐rich polymers and is important in the ecology of cells living on marine sediments. Production rates, production pathways, and monosaccharide composition of water‐soluble (colloidal) carbohydrates, EPS, and intracellular storage carbohydrate (glucans) were investigated in the epipelic (mud‐inhabiting) diatoms Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenburg), Navicula perminta (Grün.) in Van Heurck, and Amphora exigua Greg. under a range of experimental conditions simulating aspects of the natural environment. Cellular rates of colloidal carbohydrate, EPS, and glucan production were significantly higher during nutrient‐replete compared with nutrient‐limited growth for all three species. The proportion of EPS in the extracellular carbohydrate pool increased significantly (to 44%–69%) as cells became nutrient limited. Cylindrotheca closterium produced two types of EPS differing in sugar composition and production patterns. Nutrient‐replete cells produced a complex EPS containing rhamnose, fucose, xylose, mannose, galactose, glucose, and uronic acids. Nutrient‐limited cells produced an additional EPS containing mannose, galactose, glucose, and uronic acids. Both EPS types were produced under illuminated and darkened conditions. 14C‐labeling revealed immediate production of 14C‐glucan and significant increases in 14C‐EPS between 3 and 4 h after addition of label. The glucan synthesis inhibitor 2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile significantly reduced 14C‐colloidal carbohydrate and 14C‐EPS. The glucanase inhibitor P‐nitrophenyl β‐d ‐glucopyranoside resulted in accumulation of glucan within cells and lowered rates of 14C‐colloidal and 14C‐EPS production. Cycloheximide prevented glucan catabolism, but glucan production and EPS synthesis were unaffected. 相似文献
