Shell abnormalities in scaphitid ammonites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The kinds incidence of shell abnormalities were investigated in over 2000 adult Late Cretaceous scaphitid ammonites. Most are species of Hoploscaphites Discoscaphites from the Maastrichtian Fox Hills Formation; for comparison, four older species of Scaphites were also studied. Four kinds of abnormalities vary in their incidence among the Fox Hills taxa but display no general trends. (1) Morton's syndrome, shell asymmetry unrelated to external injury, occurs in 3 to 6% of the Fox Hills scaphites. (2) Suture wander. veering-off of the ventral lobe of the suture from the midline of the venter, occurs in most Fox Hills taxa with an incidence ranging from 1 to 11%. (3) Stretch pathology, an attenuation of the shell on the posterior part of the adult body chamber, is confined to Hoploscaphifes nicolleti. (4) Externally inflicted injury, indicated by repaired damage on mature shells, has an average incidence of 10% in Fox Hills scaphites except in the stratigraphically youngest H. nebrascensis H. cheyennewis which approach 25 40% respectively. Good correlation between percent injuries adult size ornamentation is obtained only in Discoscaphifes; all morphs of the co-occurring Hoploscaphites display nearly the same incidence of injuries regardless of their morphologic variation. The stratigraphically youngest H. nebrascensis becomes larger more nodose simultaneously sustains more injuries. However, its dimorph H. cheyennensis remains morphologically unchanged although its incidence of injuries quadruples. These injury data, in themselves, do not support the hypothesis that predators were contributing more heavily to the mortality of Maastrichtian ammonites precipitated their extinction.  相似文献

We examined the compartmentalization of bioactive tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) to the subarachnoid space and systemic circulation in patients with meningococcal meningitis and septic shock/bacteraemia. In patients with meningitis, median levels of TNF in 31 paired samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum were respectively 783 pg/ml and below detection limit (p < 0.001) and median levels of IL-6 were 150 ng/ml and 0.3 ng/ml (p < 0.0001). In patients with septic shock without meningitis, median levels in paired samples of CSF and serum were respectively below detection limit and 65 pg/ml (not significant, (ns)) (TNF, eleven patients) and 1.3 ng/ml-3 ng/ml (ns) (IL-6, nine patients). The data show that TNF and IL-6 are localized to the subarachnoid space in patients with meningitis although the blood-brain barrier is penetrable to serum proteins. On the other hand, patients with septic shock tend to have cytokines in both serum and CSF.  相似文献

The attack rate of a population of the braconid parasitoid Cotesia glomerata, introduced into the USA over 100 years ago as a parasitoid of Pieris rapae, was compared with that of a native British population, which normally attacks P. brassicae, and with that of a P. rapae specialist, Cotesia rubecula. British C. glomerata attacked P. brassicae at a much higher rate than it attacked P. rapae. In comparison with British C. glomerata, C. rubecula showed a higher attack rate with P. rapae. American C. glomerata attacked P. rapae at a slightly higher rate than did British C. glomerata, but not at as high a rate as that achieved by C. rubecula. The differences in each comparison were statistically significant. The possible causes of the differences between British and American C. glomerata attacking P. rapae are discussed. They may be due to genetic or environmental effects. Egg load did not appear to be a factor limiting the number of hosts parasitized under the conditions of the experiments.  相似文献

Superparasitism is a widespread phenomenon in insect parasitoids and may be advantageous in certain circumstances. In this paper, we distinguish two kinds of superparasitism with different adaptive consequences for an ovipositing parasitoid: self superparasitism, where a parasitoid oviposits in a host in which she has previously oviposited, and conspecific superparasitism, where she oviposits in a host containing egg(s) from a previous oviposition by a conspecific. Our studies on Trichogramma evanescens Westwood show that females lay smaller clutches on parasitized than on healthy hosts but make the same overall allocation of males and females, although the sequence of sexes during oviposition differs. No difference was found between allocation in self and conspecific superparasitism. These results are discussed in the light of theories for progeny and sex allocation.
Selbst- und konspezifisch-superparasitismus durch die schlupfwespe Trichogramma evanescens
Zusammenfassung Superparasitismus ist ein weitverbreitetes Phänomen in Parasitoiden von Insekten und es kann unter bestimmten Umständen vorteilhaft sein. Diese Arbeit macht Unterschied zwischen zwei Formen von Superparasitismus, jeder mit seiner eigenen adaptiven Konsequenz für die parasitierende Schlupfwespe: Selbst-Superparasitismus, wenn eine Schlupfwespe einen Wirt parasitiert die sie vorher selbst parasitiert hat, und Konspezifisch-Superparasitismus, wenn sie einen Wirt parasitiert die vorher von einem Artgenossen parasitiert worden ist. Unsere Untersuchungen an Trichogramma evanescens zeigen dass die Weibchen auf den belegten Wirten, aber das Gesamtverhältnis von männlichen und weiblichen Brut ist dasselbe, obschon die Reihenfolge in den die Eier der beiden Geschlechte abgelegt werden sich underscheiden. Keinen Unterschied wurde gefunden zwischen die Ablegung während elbst-Superparasitismus und Konspezifisch-Superparasitismus. Diese Ergebnisse werden diskutiert im Rahmen der Theorien für die Belegung des Wirtes in bezug auf die Anzahl und das Geschlecht der Eier.

Males of the coenagrionid damselflies Argia moesta, A. sedula and hchnura ramburii use similar penis morphology to remove and/or reposition sperm of previous males from the storage organs of females prior to inseminating them. Although the species vary in the degree to which sperm is removed from or packed into the spermatheca, in all three species, sperm is removed from the bursa copulatrix. Since sperm in the bursa probably has priority in fertilizing eggs in at least the first oviposition after mating, sperm precedence can be estimated as the percentage of sperm (by volume) in the bursa belonging to the last male to mate. Estimated sperm precedence for these species is approximately 71% for Argia sedula, 82% for I. ramburii and 93% for A. moesta. These results, combined with similar ones for other damselflies clearly indicate that the ability to displace sperm may be widespread among temperate-zone Zygoptera. Species with each of the four major variations in damselfly penis structure have now been shown to displace sperm using this morphology. The systematic distribution of these major variants suggests several origins of sperm displacement ability within the Zygoptera. Whether or not all damselflies are capable of sperm displacement depends on both the presence of micro-structures used in sperm removal or repositioning and on the presence of sperm of previous males in mating females. It is possible, therefore, to predict that sperm displacement occurs in a damselfly if (1) females mate more than once, (2) mating females store sperm in organs accessible to penis morphology, (3) the distal segment of the male penis has structures similar to those known to be involved in sperm removal or repositioning, and (4) oviposition occurs in tandem or with the male non-contact guarding his mate.  相似文献
