ABSTRACT. The morphology and morphogenesis of some oligotrichs were investigated using protargol impregnation, silver carbonate impregnation and scanning electron microscopy. The somatic kineties of Strobilidium caudatum form a spiral at the posterior pole. Strobilidiids without such a spiral are transferred to the genus Rimostrombidium. Fourteen new combinations and a nomen novum, Strobilidium kahli, are necessary, Meseres corlissi n. sp. is characterized by eight somatic kineties composed of long cilia which are not fused to “bristles” as they are in Halteria. Strombidium oblongum shows similar characteristics and is thus combined with Meseres. Strombidium rehwaldi n. sp. has an anterior and an equatorial girdle of extrusomes. The morphogenesis of Meseres and Halteria is very similar, i.e. the entire somatic ciliature and the oral primordium originate apokinetally on the cell surface; the parental somatic ciliature is resorbed. In strobilidiids and tintinnids, the oral anlagen develop in a subsurface pouch and the parental somatic kineties, which are not resorbed, elongate by intrakinetal proliferation of basal bodies. In strombidiids, the oral primordium develops in an intracellular sac or tube. These morphogenetic peculiarities and distinct morphologic characters (e.g. arrangement of adoral membranelles) were applied in constructing a phylogenetic system for oligotrichs using hypotrichs as outgroup. This shows that halteriids are more closely related to hypotrichs than they are to other oligotrichs. Radar observations of the diurnal timing of bird migration in the Sahara Desert are presented for autumn migration. Study sites were on a transect along the north-south migratory direction. Three groups of birds migrating either during day, evening or night in the northern part of the Western desert in Egypt were identified. The maximum of day and night groups occurred later the further south the study sites were. Based on the distance between sites and the timing of peak migration, birds were flying at an estimated ground speed of about 20 m/s. The maximum of the evening group was at about 21:00 h at all sites. The three groups were classified according to three different strategies of migration across the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert: (1) the day group of birds performed a non-stop flight across the sea and at least the northern part of the desert; [2] the night group performed an intermittent migratory strategy with stopover at the coast of Egypt to continue migration the next evening; (3) the evening group birds were also intermittent migratory fliers, but they stopped somewhere in the desert after a continuous flight across the sea and part of the desert. About 20% of all migrants are involved in non-stop migration and 80% in intermittent migration with stopover at the coast (70%) or with stopover in the desert (10%). Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) is the most important vector of human malaria in sub‐Saharan Africa, affecting the lives of millions of people. Existing tools such as insecticide‐treated nets and indoor‐residual sprays are not only effective, but also have limitations as a result of the development of resistance to insecticides and behavioural adaptations in biting time. Therefore, novel mosquito‐control tools are needed. Odour‐releasing traps have a potential for both trapping and surveillance purposes. Based on the outcome of ex vivo gene expression assays and in vivo electrophysiological assays on hundreds of volatile organic compounds, 29 ‘candidate behaviourally‐disruptive organic compounds' (cBDOCs) are selected, belonging to 10 chemical categories, to be assayed in the laboratory using dual‐choice olfactometers for the ability to modify the ‘attractiveness’ (i.e. significantly more insects being caught in the associated trap) of a basic volatile blend consisting of ammonia, lactic acid and tetradecanoic acid but without additional carbon dioxide. Compounds that either reduce or increase trap catches by the basic blend in the olfactometer experiments are tested under African conditions in choice experiments in a semi‐field facility in Kenya. The release rates of cBDOCs are determined gravimetrically to allow the calculation of aerial concentrations at the trap outlet. Aerial concentrations in the sub‐p.p.m. range are reported for the first time to influence mosquito behaviour. The results of the olfactometer and semi‐field assays generally correspond. Under semi‐field conditions, three compounds, 3‐heptanol (0.025 p.p.m.), 2‐methylpropanal (0.05 p.p.m.) and 4,5‐dimethylthiazole (0.73 p.p.m.), significantly increase trap catches relative to the basic blend consisting of ammonia, lactic acid, tetradecanoic acid and carbon dioxide. 2‐Acetylthiophene, 2‐nonanone and 2‐phenylethanol decrease the number of mosquitoes caught at all concentrations tested under semi‐field conditions. Because heavy branchial infestations are thought to interfere with respiration, we examined the attachment of three stalked ciliates commonly found in the branchial chambers of Louisiana crawfish. Attachments by Cothurnia sp., Epistylis sp. and Acineta sp. differ in their fine structure. Stalks of the peritrichous ciliates. Cothurnia and Epistylis, contain striated tubules that differ in their arrangement, diameter, and in the periodicity of their striations. In both species the striated tubules branch within the basal disk and attach to a pad of adhesive material secreted by the organism during initial attachment to the gill surface. The stalk of the suctorian Acineta is composed of a striated honeycomb-like matrix. Within the basal disc the matrix is disorganized; however, striated elements anchor the stalk to a pad of adhesive material. Attachment sites also differ in the amount of secretory material deposited. Cothurnia forms a multi-layered, granular pad; Epistylis forms an indistinct, microfibrillar layer, and Acineta deposits a thick mucoid pad. None of the ciliates appear to damage the gill epicuticle nor is there an obvious host response. Harmful effects are probably limited to a decrease in respiratory surface area and disruption of normal water flow patterns. This may impair respiration sufficiently to increase the susceptibility of crawfish to low dissolved oxygen concentrations encountered periodically in commercial crawfish ponds. 相似文献

During a collecting trip to Chile, two species of Paramesochridae belonging to the genera Diarthrodella and Rossopsyllus were found. The new species D. chilensis is widely distributed on the coasts of central Chile. Up to now, the new subspecies R. kerguelenensis quellonensis is only known from Quellón, Island of Chiloé. An essential clue to the uppermost Silurian in the submarine Baltic arca is the Beyrichienkalk. According to recent investigations it constitutes a glacial drift boulder sequence characterized by four ostracode associations with about sixty species. In the correlation of ostracode zones of Baltoscandia these associations form a connecting link and thus are also of biozonal character. In the terms of regional stratigraphic units (East Baltic arca). the lower stratigraphic boundary of this sequence lies approximately at the beginning of the Kuressaare beds and the top in the upper Ohesaare beds. The term Beyrichienkalk should be used for those glacial erratics that are characterized by typical ostracodes of the four associations defined here. 相似文献

H-Y antigen was investigated in 14 turtle species belonging to five different families. In 13 species the female was typed as H-Y antigen positive, only in Chinemys reevesi was the male H-Y antigen positive. Since in all vertebrate species studied till now, the expression of H-Y antigen is strictly correlated with the heterogametic sex, it can be assumed that in turtles both types of sex determining mechanisms are realized, namely the ZZ/ZW-and the XX/XY mechanism; both mechanisms are realized in species belonging to one and the same turtle family. Ovaries of neonatal rats are not endowed with specific LH/hCG receptors up to 6–8 days of age. Treatment of ovarian membranes of the neonatal rat with neuraminidase results in a specific binding of radioactively labeled hCG, while an increase of hormone binding is observed after neuraminidase treatment of ovarian membranes of the 21-day-old rat. These changes in hormone receptor sites in the ovary are dependent on the neuraminidase concentration used and are due to a receptor with a dissociation constant (KD ) of about 10−9 M. The KD of the receptor in the LH/hCG sensitive ovary without neuraminidase treatment is about 10−10 M. These results indicate the presence of two different LH/hCG receptors in the ovarian membrane. The unmasking effect of neuraminidase onto LH/hCG receptors indicate that ganglioside-like structures are responsible for the masking of receptors in the neonatal, insensitive rat ovary and also in the 21-day-old sensitive ovary. Ganglioside preparations are able to inhibit the binding, and the fractionation of ovary gangliosides results in a fraction with a rather high inhibition potency of LH/hCG binding to the receptor. It is hypothesized that the masked receptors in the sensitive period represent a store of receptors for the reconstitution of the ovarian cells with active receptors after internalization of the hormone-receptor complex. Thus the masking of the receptors in the early postnatal rat ovary could be a prerequisite for the female differentiation of hypothalamic centers. The observed neuraminidase effect in vitro could reflect a physiologic situation. Neuraminidase was found in the ovary, and during early postnatal development the neuraminidase activity pattern coincides with that of the ovarian LH/hCG receptor changes. 相似文献
