Abstract: Certain birds use mammal hair for the lining or structural strengthening of their nest. As a result, many bird nests can be regarded as natural hair snares. Preliminary studies indicate that analyses of hairs found in birds' nests are an effective method for detecting and identifying mammals that live in or migrate through an area and could be a useful tool to gain information about rare or hard to detect mammals. I documented 27 mammal taxa that were identified from hair collected from >3,000 nests. This study summarizes the results of 4 projects that represent application of this technique. This noninvasive method appears to be a useful tool for easily accessing basic faunistical data about mammal fauna of the given area.  相似文献

Host age and fitness-related traits in a koinobiont aphid parasitoid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Abstract.  1. Trade-offs play a key role in species evolution and should be found in host–parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between host age categories.
2. The braconid wasp, Aphidius ervi , is a solitary endoparasitoid that allows its aphid hosts to continue to feed and grow after parasitisation. The hypotheses that host age influences their quality and that female parasitoids exploit their hosts based on that quality were tested under laboratory conditions using no-choice tests.
3.  Aphidius ervi females accepted the aphid Myzus persicae for oviposition and their progeny developed successfully in all host ages. The fitness-related traits of parasitoids did not increase linearly with the host age in which they developed. Host quality was found to be optimal at intermediate host ages and the females preferred to parasitise these hosts. The shortest progeny development time and a more female-biased sex ratio were observed in hosts of intermediate age.
4. This study suggests the existence of multiple interactive trade-offs occurring during host–parasitoid interactions according to host age related quality.  相似文献

Although the faunal elements of Far East Asian Mesozoic terrestrial biota have attracted much attention in recent years, their palaeoecology remains poorly known. In particular, features of the palaeoclimate are highly controversial. To address this point we used the Mesozoic fossil wood Xenoxylon , a genus recognized as an indicator of wet temperate biotopes and which is common in the area during the Carnian–Maastrichtian interval. We re-appraised bibliographic data and gathered new data for Xenoxylon in the Mesozoic of Far East Asia. This demonstrated that previous taxonomic approaches to the genus have been so far idiosyncratic. We examined the anatomical diversity of morphogenus Xenoxylon in Far East Asia and compared it to that of samples from Europe. This indicates that in an area centred on north-eastern China, Xenoxylon reached a level of anatomical diversity unmatched elsewhere in the world. We hypothesize that this diversity witnesses the persistence of palaeoecological conditions particularly suitable for Xenoxylon and that a wet temperate climate prevailed over most of the area throughout the Carnian–Maastrichtian interval. It is in this setting that the famous Jehol Biota probably evolved.  相似文献

ABA Levels and Effects in Chilled and Hardened Phaseolus vulgaris   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Leaf abscisic acid (ABA) levels of chilled P. vulgaris weremeasured after 18 h chilling at 5°C, at a saturation deficitof 1.24 g m–3 (SD), and after chilling in a water-saturatedatmosphere. Changes were also followed during a chill hardeningperiod of 4 d at 12°C, 2.1 g m–3 SD. It was foundthat hardening resulted in an almost 5. fold increase in ABAlevels after 3 d at 12°C, and this decreased to approximatelycontrol levels on the fourth day. Subsequent chilling of hardenedplants produced no change in ABA levels from that of controlplants (22° C). In contrast, non-hardened plants chilledat 1.24 g m–3 SD had ABA levels almost 3 times the levelof control plants. However, chilling in a water-saturated atmosphereresulted in a decrease in ABA levels. In addition, the response of leaf diffusion resistance (LDR)to exogenous ABA fed via the transpiration stream was measuredat 5 ° C and 22° C in hardened and non-hardened plants.Use of tritium-labelled ABA was made to calculate the stomatalsensitivity to ABA. It was found that exogenous ABA caused anincreased in LDR at 22°C in both hardened and non-hardenedplants. However, the sensitivity of the hardened plants to ABAwas greater in terms of rate of closure and amount of ABA requiredto close the stomata. At 5°C, however, ABA caused stomatalopening and the maintainance of open stomata in non-hardenedplants. In hardened plants, ABA caused stomatal closure at 5°C.These results are discussed in relation to the locking-openresponse of chilled P. vulgaris stomata. Although loss of genetic variation is frequently assumed to be associated with loss of adaptive potential, only few studies have examined adaptation in populations with little genetic variation. On the Swedish west coast, the northern fringe populations of the natterjack toad Bufo calamita inhabit an atypical habitat consisting of offshore rock islands. There are strong among‐population differences in the amount of neutral genetic variation, making this system suitable for studies on mechanisms of trait divergence along a gradient of within‐population genetic variation. In this study, we examined the mechanisms of population divergence using QST–FST comparisons and correlations between quantitative and neutral genetic variation. Our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the six populations included in this study, as indicated by low QSTFST values, lack of significant population × temperature interactions and lack of significant differences among the islands in breeding pond size. The six populations included in this study differed in both neutral and quantitative genetic variation. Also, the correlations between neutral and quantitative genetic variation tended to be positive, however, the relatively small number of populations prevents any strong conclusions based on these correlations. Contrary to the majority of QST–FST comparisons, our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the examined populations. Furthermore, the low heritability of fitness‐related traits may limit evolutionary responses in some of the populations.  相似文献

Background  

The genetic diversity of crop species is the result of natural selection on the wild progenitor and human intervention by ancient and modern farmers and breeders. The genomes of modern cultivars, old cultivated landraces, ecotypes and wild relatives reflect the effects of these forces and provide insights into germplasm structural diversity, the geographical dimension to species diversity and the process of domestication of wild organisms. This issue is also of great practical importance for crop improvement because wild germplasm represents a rich potential source of useful under-exploited alleles or allele combinations. The aim of the present study was to analyse a major Pisum germplasm collection to gain a broad understanding of the diversity and evolution of Pisum and provide a new rational framework for designing germplasm core collections of the genus.  相似文献
