Water Deficit Enhanced Cotton Resistance to Spider Mite Herbivory   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We investigated the responses of cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.)to the combined effects of soil water deficit and two-spottedspider mite (Tetranychus urticaeKoch) infestation. Two mitetreatments (-M: uninfested, +M: artificially infested 83 d aftersowing), and two water regimes (+W: well watered, -W: waterstressed) were combined factorially in four treatments. Mitecolonies developed at similar rates in well-watered and water-stressedcrops. Despite the similar intensity of infestation, visualsymptoms of mite injury were more marked in well-watered hostplants (+M+W) than in their water-stressed counterparts (+M-W).Lint yield of unstressed controls (-M+W) was 175 g m-2. In uninfestedcrops, water deficit reduced yield by 30%, mites reduced theyield of well-watered crops by 92%, and the combination of miteinfestation and water deficit reduced yield by 72% (water effect:P<0.01;mite and interaction effect:P<0.0001). Differences in yieldresponses to mites between well-watered and water-stressed cropswere mostly related to differences in reproductive partitioning.The interaction between mites and water deficit was also significantfor other crop variables including canopy temperature, leafwater potential, concentration of nitrogen in reproductive structuresand seed oil concentration. The magnitude and consistency ofthe interaction between both stresses indicates that, underour experimental conditions, mechanisms of adjustment to waterdeficit may have enhanced cotton resistance to mites. This article details the relationship between history and bioethics. I argue that historians' reluctance to engage with bioethics rests on a misreading of the field as solely reducible to applied ethics, and overlooks previous enthusiasm for historical perspectives. I claim that seeing bioethics as its practitioners see it – as an interdisciplinary meeting ground – should encourage historians to collaborate in greater numbers. I conclude by outlining how bioethics might benefit from new histories of the field, and how historians can lend a fresh perspective to bioethical debates.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Weekly skim-net samples of chironomid pupal exuviae were collected at a single station on the River Chew, Avon, England, from September 1972 to September 1973. Eighty-six types of exuviae were characterized in this study, of which sixty-four made up only 4% of the year's catch. Thirty -eight percent of the year's catch was referable to Micropsectra atrofasciata Kieffer.
The samples showed the expected maxima of numbers and species in spring and early summer. The emergence periods for many of the more common species were very extended, with one or more peaks.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Gametocytes differentiated from ring-stage parasites in microcultures of human blood infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Immature gametocytes could be distinguished morphologically from late asexual trophozoites after ~ 40 h of culture. Differentiation into crescentic forms took several days and the incorporation of [3H]-isoleucine by developing gametocytes was demonstrated. About 1% of red cells contained gametocytes at the maximum densities attained. Differentiation of gametocytes occurred either directly from rings placed in culture or from the progeny of subsequent cycles of schizogony and invasion in vitro. The latter occurrence was confirmed by the development of gametocytes in marker fetal red cells added to cultures, although fetal red cells provide a less favorable environment than those with HbA for growth of the parasites.  相似文献

Abstract: Despite prevalent use of anthropogenic structures by bats and the associated implications for public health, management, and bat conservation, very little quantitative information exists about urban roost characteristics and their selection by bats. During the summers of 2001 to 2004 we conducted fieldwork in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, situated on the northern end of Colorado's Front Range, to address questions of roost selection by the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). The city has experienced its greatest growth in the past half century, with its population increasing by 30% in the last decade. Similar growth in new buildings has occurred, with the number of new housing permits issued annually doubling in the past decade. We located 142 roosts using radiotelemetry or by citizen calls in response to a newspaper article and flyers. To determine characteristics of roost selectivity by bats, we compared variables for known maternity roosts and randomly selected buildings at microhabitat and landscape scales using logistic regression; we used an information theoretic approach to determine which variables were most important. We considered 44 and 100 buildings in the microhabitat and landscape scale analyses, respectively. At the microhabitat scale maternity roosts had exit points with larger areas that were higher from the ground and had warmer average temperatures than randomly selected buildings. At the landscape scale distances to similarly categorized roosts were smaller, and urbanization variables such as lower building density, higher street density, and lower traffic count density were most important. Results for variables important to urban-roosting big brown bats were often analogous to studies that characterized maternity roosts found in tree snags and rock crevices. In addition, changes in the landscape, not only in the form of anthropogenic structures but also in water availability and vegetation structure such as riparian forests, may have led to population increases and range expansions of the big brown bat. Because big brown bats appear to selectively choose specific combinations of characteristics found at maternity roosts, not all available structures can be considered suitable and exclusion from established maternity roosts may negatively impact bat populations.  相似文献

A comparative assessment has been made of the performance of minerals modified glutamate medium (MMGM), lauryl sulphate tryptose broth (LST), MacConkey broth (MAC) and brilliant green bile broth (BGBB) in the enumeration of coliform organisms present in soft cheese, cooked meat and pâté. The medium MMGM was superior in sensitivity to the other three media and compared favourably with them in specificity; BGBB was inferior to the other media tested.  相似文献
