In a 4-year study of Hamerkops in central Mali, territories of breeding pairs overlapped and most clutches were laid in the late rainy or early dry seasons. Clutches averaged 4–8 eggs. Different pairs laid eggs having, on average, different dimensions. Eggs laid in the late rainy and early dry seasons were larger than those laid at other times. Eggs weighed, at 27-8 g, about 6% of adult female weight. Hatching success was 79% with a fledging rate of eggs hatched of 53%. Successful nests fledged 27 young but for all completed clutches the fledging rate was 0'9. Young hatched early in the sequence had a higher survival rate than those hatched later. Mean age at fledging was 47 days. Pairs fledged between 0–5 and 0–9 young per year.  相似文献

In order to determine whether the small-scale distribution of immature Ixodes dammini Spielman et al. corresponds closely to the activity patterns of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman), these relationships were examined in a site on Long Island, New York, U.S.A. We first determined the extent and temporal pattern of adult ticks feeding on deer by examining twenty-three resident deer tranquilized during September-December 1985. I. dammini adults infested deer throughout this fall period, most abundantly during October and November. With radio-telemetry collars attached to deer we determined the relative frequency that they occupied 0.25 ha quadrats of the study site. During the following summer, we examined white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), that inhabited these quadrats and removed immature ticks from each. 8975 larval and 163 nymphal I. dammini were removed from 208 mice trapped in forty-three such quadrats. The frequency of deer using these quadrats was positively correlated with both the number of larval and of nymphal ticks per mouse. These results suggest that risk of I. damminiborne zoonotic disease may be decreased by locally reducing deer density in sites that experience intense human activity.  相似文献

In many studies, reviewed in this paper, eluates of separatedplant extracts and various known endogenous and exogenous substanceshave promoted or inhibited adventitious rooting when appliedto stem cuttings. Some of the promoters are thought to act inconcert with auxin (the co-factors) and include various phenolics. The mode of action of most rooting promoters and inhibitorsis obscure. There is no good evidence that rhizocaline, theoriginally postulated root-forming hormone, consists of an auxin-phenolicconjugate, and other explanations for the action of phenolicsare not well substantiated. It is suggested that the action of many rooting promoters andinhibitors is mediated by chemical injury. Irrespective of theirchemical identity, sublethal concentrations promote rooting, while higher concentrations are inhibitory. Willmer, C. M., Wilson, A. B. and Jones, H. G. 1988. Changingresponses of stomata to abscisic acid and CO2 as leaves andplants age.—J. exp. Bot. 39: 401–410. Stomatal conductances were measured in ageing leaves of Commelinacommunis L. as plants developed; stomatal responses to CO2 andabscisic acid (ABA) in epidermal strips of C. communis takenfrom ageing leaves of developing plants and in epidermal stripsfrom the same-aged leaves (the first fully-expanded leaf) ofdeveloping plants were also monitored. Stomatal behaviour wascorrelated with parallel measurements of photosynthesis andleaf ABA concentrations. Stomatal conductance in intact leavesdecreased from a maximum of 0-9 cm s– 1 at full leaf expansionto zero about 30 d later when leaves were very senescent. Conductancesdeclined more slowly with age in unshaded leaves. Photosynthesisof leaf slices also declined with age from a maximum at fullleaf expansion until about 30 d later when no O2 exchange wasdetectable. Exogenously applied ABA (0.1 mol m– 3) didnot affect respiration or photosynthesis. In epidermal stripstaken from ageing leaves the widest stomatal apertures occurredabout 10 d after full leaf expansion (just before floweringbegan) and then decreased with age; this decrease was less dramaticin unshaded leaves. The inhibitory effects of ABA on stomatalopening in epidermal strips decreased as leaves aged and wasgreater in the presence of CO2 than in its absence. When leaveswere almost fully-senescent stomata were still able to open.At this stage, guard cells remained healthy-looking with greenchloroplasts while mesophyll cells were senescing and theirchloroplasts were yellow. Similar data were obtained for stomatain epidermal strips taken from the same-aged leaves of ageingplants. The inhibitory effects of ABA on stomatal opening alsodecreased with plant age. In ageing leaves both free and conjugated ABA concentrationsremained low before increasing dramatically about 30 d afterfull leaf expansion when senescence was well advanced. Concentrationsof free and conjugated ABA remained similar to each other atall times. It is concluded that the restriction of stomatal movements inintact leaves as the leaves and plants age is due mainly toa fall in photosynthetic capacity of the leaves which affectsintracellular CO2 levels rather than to an inherent inabilityof the stomata to function normally. Since stomatal aperturein epidermal strips declines with plant and leaf age and stomatabecome less responsive to ABA (while endogenous leaf ABA levelsremain fairly constant until leaf senescence) it is suggestedthat some signal, other than ABA, is transmitted from the leafor other parts of the plant to the stomata and influences theirbehaviour. Kinetic studies were performed on fresh-cut and aged leaf discsof Spinacia oleracea L. in order to investigate the regulatoryprocesses involved in sugar transport across the mesophyll plasmamembrane. A comparison of the kinetic profiles for fructose, glucose, sucrose and arginine obtained on freshly-cut and ageddiscs revealed that during wound-recovery, uptake is enhanced, but that this enhancement varies considerably for the differentsubstrates tested. Variation in the saturable and first-orderkinetic components of uptake was also observed. The involvementof a phosphoinositide-signalling mechanism in the wounding processwas examined by pretreating spinach leaves with lithium. Lithiuminhibited the enhancement of uptake and this effect was reversedby the addition of miro-inositol. However, in some experimentsthe tissue appeared to be insensitive to Li+. Gas chromatographicanalyses performed on cut discs indicated that ethylene wasproduced in response to wounding and that the addition of cobaltto the ageing media inhibited this ethylene production. Comparativekinetic studies of control and cobalt-treated discs indicatedthat ethylene was essential for the enhancement of transportacross the plasma membrane. However, addition of ethylene touncut tissue caused only a partial increase in the uptake offructose, which indicates that some additional wound-signallingcomponent is involved. Addition of cycloheximide to the recoverymedia completely inhibited this enhancement phenomenon. Thecycloheximide-response was not due to an inhibition of ACC synthasesynthesis nor to a reduction of ATP levels. We concluded thatthe effect of cycloheximide was on protein synthesis. Our resultsare discussed in terms of possible cellular and molecular mechanismsregulating sugar transport. Key words: Sugar transport, wounding, ethylene production, spinach leaves  相似文献

Plants of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) cv. Taborwere raised under conditions inhibiting the acquisition of coldhardiness (non-hardened) or inducing cold hardiness (hardened). All non-hardened plants developed an elongated shoot and exhibitedconsiderable frost sensitivity, as measured by the extent ofthe reduction in yield of variable chlorophyll fluorescenceafter exposure to sub-zero temperature. Hardened plants developeda shorter shoot, with fewer leaves and a greater percentageof dry matter in the root system. These parameters were associatedwith a marked increase in frost resistance. Exogenous applicationof ABA to plants effected similar morphological modificationsin both hardening and non-hardening temperature regimes; plantsdeveloped a shorter primary shoot axis and leaves exhibiteda marked increase in frost hardiness. In berseem clover ABAcan thus substitute, at least partially, for the low temperaturetreatment required to induce cold hardiness. Spraying plantsraised under hardening conditions with gibberellic acid reversedthe effects of the hardening treatment, since they developedan elongated shoot and exhibited frost sensitivity comparableto non-treated plants grown under non-hardening conditions. It is concluded that these endogenous hormones are directlyinvolved in triggering changes in morphogenesis which accompanyphysiological and metabolic events associated with the inductionof plant cold hardiness. Polyamine Titre in Relation to Chill-Sensitivity in Phaseolus sp.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Guye, M G., Vigh, L. and Wilson, J. M. 1986. Polyamine titrein relation to chill-sensitivity in Phaseolus sp.—J. exp.Bot. 37: 1036–1043. Endogenous levels of the polyamines putrescine, spermidine andspermine were quantified in the primary leaves of five cultivarsof bean (Phaseolus sp.) differing in their ‘wilting response’to a chilling exposure of 5 ?C for 24 h. Levels of polyamines prior to chilling treatment did not appearto be correlated with chill-tolerance as levels in the non-chilledcontrols were highest in cultivars of medium chill-sensitivity.Plants grown under a vapour saturation deficit (VSD) of 8?4gm–3 day/6?1 g m–3 night exhibited a mild hardeningas compared to plants grown under a VSD of 5?7 gm–3 day/4?1gm–3 night, as the former showed less wilting on chilling.Hardening at high VSD had the effect of slightly lowering theputrescine content of non-chilled tissue but total polyaminecontent remained unchanged. However, on chilling, the largestrelative increase in polyamine levels, in particular that ofputrescine, occurred in hardened plants. There was also a significantrelative increase in putrescine titre in response to chillingin non-hardened genotypes of high chill-tolerance, whereas morechill-sensitive genotypes remained unchanged or slightly declinedin putrescine content on chilling. Relative changes in putrescine content rather than absolutelevels appears to be correlated with chill-tolerance. Theseresults are discussed in view of present knowledge on the adaptivesignificance of stress-induced changes in polyamines, especiallywith regard to membrane stability Key words: Chilling, polyamines, Phaseolus sp.  相似文献

‘Integrated growth analysis’ (emphasizing aspectsof crop and plant structure) and ‘light conversion analysis’(stressing the efficiency of interception and photosyntheticconversion of light) have been used to investigate the wintergrowth of different cultivars of butterhead and crisphead typesof glasshouse lettuce. Measurements from ‘Ambassador’ (large-framed butterhead),‘Renate’ (medium-sized butterhead) and ‘Cristallo’(crisphead) were made, statistical progressions were fittedto the primary data and hence estimates of all the analyticalcomponents were derived. Curves for crop growth rate, like those for most other components, followed a generally similar pattern for all three cultivars. In integrated growth analysis, the biomass curve for Ambassadorlay above the curves for the other cultivars. The weight advantagewas initially 60 per cent and it persisted with only a smallreduction (to 40 per cent) until the final harvest. Relativegrowth rate varied little between cultivars because differencesobserved in leaf area ratio were complementary to those seenin net assimilation rate. In light conversion analysis, differences in light interceptingefficiency between cultivars were not statistically significant, though Ambassador attained full interception 4 days earlierthan Renate and 6 days earlier than Cristallo. Differences inlight utilizing efficiency were small and non-significant exceptduring the post-rosette stage when the value for Renate waslower than that of either Ambassador or Cristallo. Deviationsaround the fitted curves were correlated with fluctuations inthe light regime. An assessment is made of the utility and limitations of thetwo procedures. It is concluded that both approaches can assistin analyzing the rate of dry matter production in crops or plantstands. Integrated growth analysis is advantageous when theneed arises to treat individual and population-based attributessimultaneously, while light conversion analysis provides a meansof explicitly incorporating the primary environmental variableinfluencing growth. ABSTRACT. Three new species of fossil Anisoptera (dragonflies) are reported from Tiffanian (Late Palaeocene) sediments of the Paskapoo Formation, near Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The three species are all assigned to the new genus Alloaeschna , which is classified in the subfamily Gomphaeschninae.
Phylogenetic analysis of gomphaeschnine wing venation suggests that the subfamily is paraphyletic, with derived gomphaeschnines such as Boyeria and Linaeschna more closely related to the Brachytroninae and Aeshninae than are other gomphaeschnines. One of the most primitive gomphaeschnines, and the oldest fossil form, is the Jurassic Morbaeschna. Parallelism, convergence and reversal in the evolution of features of the wing venation is common.
The new genus Alloaeschna is at about the same evolutionary grade as the old-world genus Oligoaeschna and the new-world genus Gomphaeschna , and is one of the more primitive known members of the Gomphaeschninae. The new species are the first recorded Palaeocene gomphaeschnines and the oldest known gomphaeschnines from the Americas.
Several extant genera have fossil representatives on continents different from those on which they now survive, suggesting repeated crossing of land bridges and/or widespread ancestral species prior to the separation of the continents, and subsequent extinction leading to present relict distributions.  相似文献

ABA Levels and Effects in Chilled and Hardened Phaseolus vulgaris   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Leaf abscisic acid (ABA) levels of chilled P. vulgaris weremeasured after 18 h chilling at 5°C, at a saturation deficitof 1.24 g m–3 (SD), and after chilling in a water-saturatedatmosphere. Changes were also followed during a chill hardeningperiod of 4 d at 12°C, 2.1 g m–3 SD. It was foundthat hardening resulted in an almost 5. fold increase in ABAlevels after 3 d at 12°C, and this decreased to approximatelycontrol levels on the fourth day. Subsequent chilling of hardenedplants produced no change in ABA levels from that of controlplants (22° C). In contrast, non-hardened plants chilledat 1.24 g m–3 SD had ABA levels almost 3 times the levelof control plants. However, chilling in a water-saturated atmosphereresulted in a decrease in ABA levels. In addition, the response of leaf diffusion resistance (LDR)to exogenous ABA fed via the transpiration stream was measuredat 5 ° C and 22° C in hardened and non-hardened plants.Use of tritium-labelled ABA was made to calculate the stomatalsensitivity to ABA. It was found that exogenous ABA caused anincreased in LDR at 22°C in both hardened and non-hardenedplants. However, the sensitivity of the hardened plants to ABAwas greater in terms of rate of closure and amount of ABA requiredto close the stomata. At 5°C, however, ABA caused stomatalopening and the maintainance of open stomata in non-hardenedplants. In hardened plants, ABA caused stomatal closure at 5°C.These results are discussed in relation to the locking-openresponse of chilled P. vulgaris stomata.
