Chemical Forms of Manganese and Zinc in Phloem Exudates 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Investigations were performed to study the chemical form in which manganese and zinc are transported in sieve tubes. As a test plant Ricinus communis was used. From this plant phloem sap can be obtained in a rather pure state. The plants received labelled manganese or zinc. In the experiments on manganese translocation a radioactive phosphorus isotope was added to the nutrient solution to test if complex compounds of the cation contain also phosphorus. Components of the phloem exudate were determined by means of physicochemical separation methods. Almost all zinc but only a part of the manganese were bound to organic compounds. The major part of the manganese was in ionic form. The molecular weight of the complexing com-pound(s) of manganese was estimated to be between 1000 and 5000 and of zinc between 1000 and 1500. The complexes probably contain some phosphorus. The charge of the zinc complex is negative. 相似文献

1. One temperature shift from 20 to 30°C in darkness induces 30–40% germination in Rumex obtusifolius seeds. The same germination percentages are found with heat treatment varying between 1 and 6h duration, indicating that the total heat sum of the temperature shift is not important.
2. Germination is greatly enhanced by three consecutive heat shifts of 1h at 30°C separated by 1h periods at 20°C.
3. The seeds are activated to a small extent after a slow warming (+2°Ch–1 ) from 20 to 30°C, followed by incubation for 1h at 30°C. Germination is much higher after rapid heating (+10°Ch–1 ) to 30°C, followed by 1h incubation at this temperature. Repeated fast heating treatments on four consecutive days enhances germination. Moderately rapid heatings (+3·3°Ch–1 ) give intermediate results.
4. The rate of cooling does not influence the germination percentage. Cooling alone cannot induce germination.
5. Heating alone from 15 to 25°C without cooling also activates germination. In this temperature range the seeds are more activated by rapid warming than by slow warming.

Species delimitation, an issue central to systematics and biodiversity studies, is addressed in the epunctifera group of the stem borer genus Sesamia Guenée (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). This group is composed of four sub‐Saharan species: Sesamia poephaga Tams & Bowden; Sesamia epunctifera Hampson; Sesamia penniseti Tams & Bowden; and Sesamia poebora Tams & Bowden, the taxonomic status of which was unclear. The first species was considered a possible synonym of the second, and the third species was considered a possible synonym of the fourth. An analysis combining morphological, ecological and molecular data enables us to conclude that S. epunctifera and S. poephaga are different species, and that S. poebora is a synonym of S. penniseti. Two new species were discovered: Sesamia firmata sp.n. and Sesamia veronica sp.n. Sesamia firmata sp.n. has atypical genitalic morphology, suggesting a strong selection resulting in a reinforcement of pre‐zygotic isolation. Some specimens previously identified as S. penniseti on the basis of morphology are sisters to S. epunctifera on the mitochondrial tree, and are connected to S. penniseti on the nuclear tree. The mitochondrial distance from S. penniseti and S. epunctifera is 7.6% and 3.9%, respectively, suggesting an ancient mitochondrial introgression from S. epunctifera into S. penniseti. The possible causes of the reinforcement and introgressive hybridization are discussed. This case of mitochondrial introgression, uncommon in Lepidoptera, in which females are the heterogametic sex, may be an exception to Haldane's rule. The oxygen uptake of iris bulbs (Iris×hollandica‘Wedgwood’) which had been stored dry at 30 C (“retarded’ bulbs) was low (10 μmol O2 per h and bulb), the oxygen uptake of the intact bulb, the three outer fleshy scales and the remaining central part of the bulb increased three- to fourfold, nearly twofold and fourfold, respectively. Mitochondria were isolated from the scales of retarded and activated bulbs and their oxygen consumption with succinate, l -malate (plus pyruvate). x-ketoglutarate and NADH as substrate was measured polarographically. The oxidative capacity of mitochondria isolated from the scales of activated bulbs was only slightly higher than that from retarded bulbs when calculated on a tissue basis. No difference was found between the phosphorylation efficiency, respiratory control, cytochrome c deficiency, succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, succinate-cytochrome c rductase, NADH-cytochrome c reductase and cytochrome oxidase activity of the retarded and activated bulbs. The increase in the in vitro oxygen uptake of the scales after transition from 30 to 13 C was not accompanied by an equal increase in the oxidative capacity of their mitochondria suggesting that they are not responsible for this rise in oxygen uptake. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Choice experiments on interspecific host discrimination in A.lopezi and A. diversicornis were carried out on discs of cassava leaf containing four hosts (P.manihoti) that had been parasitized by the other species and four unparasitized hosts.
- 2 A.lopezi accepted both host types equally for oviposition, whereas A.diversicornis accepted fewer hosts that had been parasitized by A.lopezi than unparasitized ones. A.diversicornis is therefore capable of interspecific host discrimination, but such a capability was not demonstrated for A.lopezi.
- 3 Survival probability in singly parasitized hosts was 0.85 for both parasitoid species. When the time interval between ovipositions was 2 h or less, survival in multiparasitized hosts was 0.68 for A.lopezi and 0.17 for A.diversicornis, irrespective of priority. Increasing A.lopezi priority to 24±2h did not increase A.lopezi survival. A.diversicornis survival, however, increased to 0.43 when A.diversicornis was given 24 ± 2 h priority. A.diversicornis eggs took 19 h longer than A.lopezi eggs to hatch. This could explain the difference in competitive abilities in multiparasitized hosts.
- 4 The observed difference in host selection behaviour between A.lopezi and A.diversicornis is in accordance with the different benefits of multiparasitism: A.lopezi gains more than A.diversicornis because of its superior within-host competitive abilities.
- 5 Neither species avoided multiparasitism completely. The low survival probability of A.diversicornis in multiparasitized hosts may partly explain its failure to establish when introduced into Africa as part of a biological control programme of P.manihoti.

Breeding strategies of two closely related fulmarine petrels were studied on Ardery Island, on the continental coast of East Antarctica, where short summers are expected to narrow the time-window for reproduction. Both species had a similar breeding period (97 days from laying to fledging) but Antarctic Petrels Thalassoica antarctica bred up to 16 days earlier than Southern Fulmars. During the pre-laying exodus, all Antarctic Petrels deserted the colony, whereas some Southern Fulmars Fulmarus glacialoides remained. Antarctic Petrels exhibited stronger synchronization in breeding, made longer foraging trips and spent less time guarding their chicks than Southern Fulmars. Overall breeding success of both species was similar but failures of Antarctic Petrels were concentrated in the early egg-phase and after hatching, when parents ceased guarding. Southern Fulmars lost eggs and chicks later in the breeding cycle and so wasted more parental investment in failed breeding attempts. Different breeding strategies may be imposed by flight characteristics; Southern Fulmars are less capable of crossing large expanses of pack ice and need to delay breeding until the sea ice retreats and breaks up. Summary After solubilization of membranes from vitellogenic oocytes of the crayfish Orconectes limosus, a component with an apparent molecular weight between 28 and 30 kDa that specifically binds vitellogenin, could be identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and by electroblotting. Because this component was pronase sensitive, we assume that we are dealing with a protein. Within populations, individual animals may vary considerably in morphology and ecology. The degree to which variation in morphology is related to ecological variation within a population remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether variation in body size and shape among sexes and age classes of the lizard Podarcis melisellensis translates in differential whole-animal performance (sprint speed, bite force), escape and prey attack behaviour in the field, microhabitat use and diet. Male and female adult lizards differed significantly in body size and head and limb proportions. These morphological differences were reflected in differences in bite strength, but not in sprint speed. Accordingly, field measurements of escape behaviour and prey attack speed did not differ between the sexes, but males ate larger, harder and faster prey than females. In addition to differences in body size, juveniles diverged from adults in relative limb and head dimensions. These shape differences may explain the relatively high sprint and bite capacities of juvenile lizards.
