1. Carbon budget parameters were measured for young-of-the-year Monoporeia affinis in a combined field and laboratory (microcosm) study, designed to quantify the role of sediment bacteria as a carbon source for juvenile amphipods. Special emphasis was placed on the stimulative effects of amphipod activity (foraging, feeding, bioturbation) on sediment bacterial production and abundance by including the carbon thus generated in carbon budget calculations. 2. Amphipod production was clearly higher at lower densities, suggesting strong intraspecific interactions. Negative production was recorded at amphipod densities of 10000 and 20000 ind. m?2. Negative production was not accompanied by a decrease in amphipod total lipid content, however, probably due to the lack of easily mobilized lipids in juvenile amphipods. Amphipod respiration rate was 0.45 μg O2 ind.?1 h?1, or O.15 μg C ind.?1 h?1. Sediment bacterial carbon content averaged 1.31 and 0.90 mg g?1 DW under field and laboratory conditions, respectively. 3. Bacterial carbon was not quantitatively important for Monoporeia. Due to higher bacterial abundance and production in natural, stratified sediment, assimilation of bacterial carbon was highest for the field population, providing 6.3% of the amphipods' carbon requirement. In microcosm populations, bacterial carbon accounted for between 1.7 and 5.2% of overall amphipod carbon demand, increasing with amphipod density and bioturbation. 4. Ingestion rate, rather than the quantity of bacterial carbon in the sediment, was found to limit absorption of bacterial carbon from the sediment.  相似文献

This paper briefly recapitulates work on the preterrestrialphase of the evolution of hearing which was published in detailelsewhere. Following this, the problem of the origin of theterrestrial middle ear is examined in some detail, and it isdemonstrated that Eusthenopteron, and probably other rhipidistiansas well, possessed an eardrum. This drum was formed by the fusionof the distal surface of a spiracular diverticulum and a ligamentbetween parietal shield and squamosal. It is further demonstratedthat the geometry of this eardrum in relation to the middle-earcavity was adequate to allow the fish to make the transitionfrom aquatic hearing to terrestrial hearing without loss ofsensitivity.  相似文献

Field studies on responses of two mosquito sibling species, Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. quadriannulatus Theobald, to a man, a calf and different release rates of carbon dioxide (man, calf and cow equivalents) were conducted in north-eastern South Africa. Various combinations of baits were compared in two-choice tests, using two mosquito nets, placed 2.5 m apart and 10 cm off the ground. Mosquitoes attracted to the baits were able to enter the nets from below and were collected by means of a suction tube. In a two-choice test between a man and CO2 (human equivalent, 250 ml/min), 81% of the An. quadriannulatus were caught with CO2. The reverse was seen for An. arabiensis , where only 20% of the total catch was caught with CO2 compared to man. High release rates of CO2 (cow equivalent, 800 ml/min) attracted significantly more An. quadriannulatus than the low release rate (250 ml/min), whereas no significant effect of the release rate of CO2 on the total catch of An. arabiensis was seen. In the latter species, up to 33% of the attraction of human emanation is attributable to carbon dioxide. Anopheles quadriannulatus was equally attracted to a calf and CO2 (calf equivalent, 180 ml/min). Catches of other mosquito species showed consistent differences between all treatments which appear to be associated with differences in host-preference, suggesting that the importance of CO2 in host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes increases with the degree of zoophily.  相似文献

Shifts in the timing of spring phenology are a central feature of global change research. Long‐term observations of plant phenology have been used to track vegetation responses to climate variability but are often limited to particular species and locations and may not represent synoptic patterns. Satellite remote sensing is instead used for continental to global monitoring. Although numerous methods exist to extract phenological timing, in particular start‐of‐spring (SOS), from time series of reflectance data, a comprehensive intercomparison and interpretation of SOS methods has not been conducted. Here, we assess 10 SOS methods for North America between 1982 and 2006. The techniques include consistent inputs from the 8 km Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer NDVIg dataset, independent data for snow cover, soil thaw, lake ice dynamics, spring streamflow timing, over 16 000 individual measurements of ground‐based phenology, and two temperature‐driven models of spring phenology. Compared with an ensemble of the 10 SOS methods, we found that individual methods differed in average day‐of‐year estimates by ±60 days and in standard deviation by ±20 days. The ability of the satellite methods to retrieve SOS estimates was highest in northern latitudes and lowest in arid, tropical, and Mediterranean ecoregions. The ordinal rank of SOS methods varied geographically, as did the relationships between SOS estimates and the cryospheric/hydrologic metrics. Compared with ground observations, SOS estimates were more related to the first leaf and first flowers expanding phenological stages. We found no evidence for time trends in spring arrival from ground‐ or model‐based data; using an ensemble estimate from two methods that were more closely related to ground observations than other methods, SOS trends could be detected for only 12% of North America and were divided between trends towards both earlier and later spring.  相似文献

1. During recent decades, Gonyostomum semen populations have spread in northern temperate regions forming dense blooms that may dominate the phytoplankton assemblage for extended periods. In this study, we investigate the effects of G. semen blooms in boreal brown water lakes with special emphasis on phytoplankton, fish and benthic invertebrate assemblages using data from 10 boreal lakes sampled annually over a 10‐year period. 2. Significant differences in phytoplankton and benthic invertebrate assemblages were found between lakes with high (3.01 mm3 L?1; >80% phytoplankton biomass) and lakes with low G. semen biomass (0.03 mm3 L?1; <5% phytoplankton biomass). In particular, high G. semen lakes had lower biomass of smaller, edible phytoplankton and a higher abundance and biomass of benthic invertebrates, especially Chaoborus flavicans, and perch than low G. semen lakes. 3. The length distribution of fish also suggested a tendency towards large and older fish and a lower recruitment success in high G. semen lakes, as denoted by lower abundances of fish shorter than 10 cm and higher biomass and abundance of fish longer than 15 cm in high G. semen lakes. 4. This study shows that high G. semen lakes are characterised by less edible phytoplankton, dominance by a few species and enhanced benthic secondary and fish production. Hence, the conjecture that high biomasses of G. semen create a bottleneck in the energy transfer to higher trophic levels seems less likely in boreal lakes.  相似文献

Although radar has been used in studies of bird migration for 60 years, there is still no network in Europe for comprehensive monitoring of bird migration. Europe has a dense network of military air surveillance radars but most systems are not directly suitable for reliable bird monitoring. Since the early 1990s, Doppler radars and wind profilers have been introduced in meteorology to measure wind. These wind measurements are known to be contaminated with insect and bird echoes. The aim of the present research is to assess how bird migration information can be deduced from meteorological Doppler radar output. We compare the observations on migrating birds using a dedicated X‐band bird radar with those using a C‐band Doppler weather radar. The observations were collected in the Netherlands, from 1 March to 22 May 2003. In this period, the bird radar showed that densities of more than one bird per km3 are present in 20% of all measurements. Among these measurements, the weather radar correctly recognized 86% of the cases when birds were present; in 38% of the cases with no birds detected by the bird radar, the weather radar claimed bird presence (false positive). The comparison showed that in this study reliable altitudinal density profiles of birds cannot be obtained from the weather radar. However, when integrated over altitude, weather radar reflectivity is correlated with bird radar density. Moreover, bird flight speeds from both radars show good agreement in 78% of cases, and flight direction in 73% of cases. The usefulness of the existing network of weather radars for deducing information on bird migration offers a great opportunity for a European‐wide monitoring network of bird migration.  相似文献
