Background

Delirium is a common disorder in the early phase of stroke. Given the presumed cholinergic deficiency in delirium, we tested treatment with the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor rivastigmine.

Methods

This pilot study was performed within an epidemiological study. In 527 consecutive stroke patients presence of delirium was assessed during the first week with the confusion assessment method. Severity was scored with the delirium rating scale (DRS). Sixty-two patients developed a delirium in the acute phase of stroke. Only patients with a severe and persistent delirium (defined as a DRS of 12 or more for more than 24 hours) were enrolled in the present study. In total 26 fulfilled these criteria of whom 17 were treated with orally administered rivastigmine with a total dose between 3 and 12 mg a day. Eight patients could not be treated because of dysphagia and one because of early discharge.

Results

No major side effects were recorded. In 16 patients there was a considerable decrease in severity of delirium. The mean DRS declined from 14.8 on day one to 8.5 after therapy and 5.6 after tapering. The mean duration of delirium was 6.7 days (range; 2–17).

Conclusion

Rivastigmine is safe in stroke patients with delirium even after rapid titration. In the majority of patients the delirium improved after treatment. A randomized controlled trial is needed to establish the usefulness of rivastigmine in delirium after stroke.

A new method is proposed which uses transitions among acts in non-stereotyped behavioural sequences as phylogenetic characters. This method is derived from the event-pairing method designed for the phylogenetic study of developmental sequences and from ethological analyses of transition matrices. It is applied to study the phylogenetic relationships within a well-known group, the presocial Zetoborinae cockroaches. The analysis is carried out with three data sets: a behavioural data set with transitions among acts in behavioural dyadic sequences, together with morphological and molecular data sets. Non-stereotyped behaviour proved to be phylogenetically informative and to display low homoplasy. This new method opens an avenue for studying the evolution of behaviour in the framework of phylogenetic analysis, which was restricted until now to the study of stereotyped sequences and/or isolated features involved in courting or building activities.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 853–867.  相似文献

逃避理论预测,不逃跑若增大适合度代价则导致逃跑启始距离加长,逃跑若增大代价则导致逃跑启始距离缩短。逃跑路径和去向等受生境结构影响。作者通过模拟捕食者逼近研究喀拉哈里树石龙子(Trachylepis sparsa)和黑环蜥(Cordylus niger)逃避策略和风险因子对逃跑启始距离的影响。与迂回逼近相比较,直接逼近不仅提高蜥蜴逃跑几率还能缩短其逃跑启始距离。喀拉哈里树石龙子在两种逼近方式下的逃跑启始距离有显著差异,这种差异对黑环蜥而言是边缘性的。喀拉哈里树石龙子以树为避所,树上个体可逼近的距离短于地面个体;快速逼近地面个体的逃跑启始距离比慢速逼近更长。习惯于有人环境的黑环蜥逃跑启始距离比人迹罕至环境中的个体更短。地面喀拉哈里树石龙子多遁至树上而很少逃入倒木或倒伏编巢中。树上喀拉哈里树石龙子通常奔逃至远侧和高处,有时遁入树洞或编巢中;黑环蜥则逃入石缝中。所有发现都证实逃避理论中有关逃跑启始距离的预测。逃跑策略的种间差异表明每一种蜥蜴都利用其生境中逃跑路径和避所的有利条件。在风险不同的生境中,生境结构可影响逃跑启始距离,似乎对逃跑策略亦有重要影响。  相似文献

We have shown previously that surfactant protein D (SP-D) binds and agglutinates Streptococcus pneumoniae in vitro. In this study, the role of SP-D in innate immunity against S. pneumoniae was investigated in vivo, by comparing the outcome of intranasal infection in surfactant protein D deficient (SP-D-/-) to wildtype mice (SP-D+/+). Deficiency of SP-D was associated with enhanced colonisation and infection of the upper and lower respiratory tract and earlier onset and longer persistence of bacteraemia. Recruitment of neutrophils to inflammatory sites in the lung was similar in both strains mice in the first 24 hrs post-infection, but different by 48 hrs. T cell influx was greatly enhanced in SP-D-/- mice as compared to SP-D+/+ mice. Our data provides evidence that SP-D has a significant role to play in the clearance of pneumococci during the early stages of infection in both pulmonary sites and blood.  相似文献

Abstract: Vertebrates that destroy or disturb habitats used by other animals may influence habitat selection by sympatric taxa. In south‐east Australian forests, superb lyrebirds (Menura novaehollandiae) displace soil, leaf litter and rocks during their daily foraging activities. We investigated whether superb lyrebirds disturb small sandstone rocks that endangered broad‐headed snakes Hoplocephalus bungaroides and common small‐eyed snakes Cryptophis nigrescens use as diurnal thermoregulatory sites. To estimate the frequency of lyrebird rock disturbance, and to assess whether lyrebirds also attack small snakes, we placed 900 plasticine snake replicas under stones on rock and soil substrates along transects on three sandstone plateaux. Because juvenile snakes must select retreat sites that simultaneously allow them to thermoregulate and minimize predation risk, we quantified the thermal environments underneath stones on rock and soil substrates. During the 6‐week experiment, animals disturbed rocks on soil substrates twice as often (16.9%) as rocks lying on rock substrates (8.2%). Disturbed rocks were significantly smaller and lighter than undisturbed rocks on both substrates. Lyrebirds were the major agents of disturbance, and attacked 40% of snake models under disturbed rocks. Rocks on soil substrates conferred the greatest thermal benefits to snakes, but both species of snake avoided these microhabitats in the field. Instead, juvenile snakes selected rocks on rock substrates, and sheltered under stones that were too heavy for superb lyrebirds to disturb. By disturbing rocks over millennia, superb lyrebirds not only have shaped the physical landscape, but also may have exerted strong selection on habitat selection by sympatric snakes.  相似文献

Background

Size of the reference population and reliability of phenotypes are crucial factors influencing the reliability of genomic predictions. It is therefore useful to combine closely related populations. Increased accuracies of genomic predictions depend on the number of individuals added to the reference population, the reliability of their phenotypes, and the relatedness of the populations that are combined.

Methods

This paper assesses the increase in reliability achieved when combining four Holstein reference populations of 4000 bulls each, from European breeding organizations, i.e. UNCEIA (France), VikingGenetics (Denmark, Sweden, Finland), DHV-VIT (Germany) and CRV (The Netherlands, Flanders). Each partner validated its own bulls using their national reference data and the combined data, respectively.

Results

Combining the data significantly increased the reliability of genomic predictions for bulls in all four populations. Reliabilities increased by 10%, compared to reliabilities obtained with national reference populations alone, when they were averaged over countries and the traits evaluated. For different traits and countries, the increase in reliability ranged from 2% to 19%.

Conclusions

Genomic selection programs benefit greatly from combining data from several closely related populations into a single large reference population.  相似文献

We infer the first phylogenetic hypothesis for Latridiidae Erichson (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea). Portions of seven genes (18S ribosomal DNA, 28S ribosomal DNA, 12S ribosomal DNA, 16S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome c oxidase I and II and histone III) were analysed. Twenty‐seven latridiid species were included, representing both subfamilies and more than half of the currently recognized genera. Eight outgroup taxa from other families of Cucujoidea were included. Parsimony and partitioned Bayesian analyses were performed on the combined dataset. In both phylogenetic analyses, the enigmatic Akalyptoischion Andrews (Latridiinae) was recovered outside of Latridiidae. The subfamilies Corticariinae and Latridiinae (without Akalyptoischion) were each recovered as monophyletic in both analyses. A new family, Akalyptoischiidae fam.n. is erected based on the results of the phylogenetic study and further support from adult morphology, key features of which are illustrated.  相似文献

Abstract Mitochondrial genomes provide a promising new tool for understanding deep‐level insect phylogenetics, but have yet to be evaluated for their ability to resolve intraordinal relationships. We tested the utility of mitochondrial genome data for the resolution of relationships within Diptera, the insect order for which the most data are available. We sequenced an additional three genomes, from a syrphid, nemestrinid and tabanid, representing three additional dipteran clades, ‘aschiza’, non‐heteroneuran muscomorpha and ‘basal brachyceran’, respectively. We assessed the influence of optimality criteria, gene inclusion/exclusion, data recoding and partitioning strategies on topology and nodal support within Diptera. Our consensus phylogeny of Diptera was largely consistent with previous phylogenetic hypotheses of the order, except that we did not recover a monophyletic Muscomorpha (Nesmestrinidae grouped with Tabanidae) or Acalyptratae (Drosophilidae grouped with Calliphoridae). The results were very robust to optimality criteria, as parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian approaches yielded very similar topologies, although nodal support varied. The addition of ribosomal and transfer RNA genes to the protein coding genes traditionally used in mitochondrial genome phylogenies improved the resolution and support, contrary to previous suggestions that these genes would evolve too quickly or prove too difficult to align to provide phylogenetic signal at deep nodes. Strategies to recode data, aimed at reducing homoplasy, resulted in a decrease in tree resolution and branch support. Bayesian analyses were highly sensitive to partitioning strategy: biologically realistic partitions into codon groups produced the best results. The implications of this study for dipteran systematics and the effective approaches to using mitochondrial genome data are discussed. Mitochondrial genomes resolve intraordinal relationships within Diptera accurately over very wide time ranges (1–200 million years ago) and genetic distances, suggesting that this may be an excellent data source for deep‐level studies within other, less studied, insect orders.  相似文献
