Development and distribution of the early life stages of the longfin pearleye <Emphasis Type="Italic">Benthalbella linguidens</Emphasis> (Aulopiformes: Scopelarchidae) in the western North Pacific

The early life history and development of the scopelarchid Benthalbella linguidens was studied, based on 203 specimens (from 5.3 to 89.7mm in body length: BL) collected from Kuroshio, Oyashio waters and transition waters of the western North Pacific. The early life stages of B. linguidens are distinguished from those of other species of Benthalbella that inhabit the North Pacific by the characters of 62–64 myomeres in the larval stage and 26–28 anal fin rays in juvenile and transforming specimen. Larvae are elongate; notochord flexion begins at ca. 12mm BL and is completed at ca. 15mm BL. The fin ray complements are established at ca. 40mm BL. The single transforming specimen (89.7mm BL) that has peritoneal pigment was collected from transition waters. All larvae were collected from Kuroshio and transition waters from winter to early summer; however, the size of larvae in Kuroshio waters was apparently smaller than that in transition waters, with ranges of 5.3–32.4mm BL (mean 17.1) and 15.3–35.3mm BL (mean 27.5), respectively. Juveniles were distributed in transition and Oyashio waters and were absent in Kuroshio waters, where adults are commonly distributed. These occurrences of larvae and juveniles in the western North Pacific indicate that B. linguidens spawns in Kuroshio waters in winter and uses transition waters as nursery grounds.     

Development of eight polymorphic microsatellites for an Australasian rainforest tree species,Cryptocarya mackinnoniana (Lauraceae)

We developed eight microsatellite markers for Cryptocarya mackinnoniana to study the spatial genetic structure and ecological correlates of parentage in secondary rainforests in Australia's Wet Tropics. The microsatellite loci were screened in 99 trees, and 623 seedlings < 0.24 m tall, at a site extending from primary rainforest into adjacent 50‐year‐old secondary rainforest. The eight loci were polymorphic, exhibiting between three and 11 alleles, and gene diversity (H_E) from 0.25 to 0.84. For the trees, no departures from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were detected, except at locus Cm03, which had an estimated null allele frequency of 0.0903. No locus combinations exhibited linkage disequilibrium.

Virions of Schmidt-Ruppin avian sarcoma virus have both polynucleotide ligase activity and DNA exonuclease activity. These enzymes complete the machinery necessary to transfer information from RNA to double stranded DNA integrated in the host DNA.     

The Marchioness of Huntly: the written record and the herbarium

By collating the evidence provided by written records and herbaria, and with a knowledge of the present-day habits of individual species, it is sometimes possible to reconstruct the vegetation pattern and, thereby, changes in the natural environment of a site or region during the last few centuries. This paper takes the form of a case study of the records left by the Marchioness of Huntly (1821–1893) and the information they provide, for example, on changes in the Huntingdonshire fenland.
