Partial regression equations were calculated that relate the mean percentage of plants infected with yellowing viruses (beet yellows and beet mild yellowing viruses) in sugar-beet crops at the end of August to the number of days during January, February and March when temperatures fell below – 0.3 °C (31-5 °F) and the mean temperatures in April, for the 21 yr, 1951–71, using weather records from Rothamsted Experimental Station. Regression analyses were also made to find the effect of other factors including mean and minimum temperatures for the same months, and also mean counts of ‘green aphids’, mainly of the vector Myzus persicae, on sugar-beet plants during May and June. Significant relationships were established with all factors, but ‘frost-days’ and April mean temperatures accounted for the greatest percentage of the variance in yellows incidence. The calculations were made separately for the years from 1951 to 1958, when no routine advice was given to farmers about aphid control, and 1959–71 when a ‘spray-warning scheme’ was in operation, and many crops were sprayed at critical times to prevent aphid- and virus-spread. Weather factors had the same effects in both periods, but for any particular weather less virus was spread in the second period than in the first, although there were sufficient aphids, i.e. the numbers expected from the prevailing weather conditions. There was no evidence that insecticide treatment used in any one year affected aphid-incidence in subsequent years. Regression analyses on weather variables were also calculated separately for each of seventeen beet-sugar factory collection-areas, using weather records from local weather stations, and also the Rothamsted weather records. Unexpectedly, the fit of the regressions was always better with Rothamsted weather data than with local weather records. Mean yellows-incidence for the different factory areas declined from south to north, and there was a linear relationship with the square root of the latitude above 50 °C. At the same time the correlation coefficients relating yellows-incidence to ‘frost-days’ became smaller and less significant, and those showing dependence  相似文献

Sugar-beet and barley were grown in pots outdoors (environmentN) and, for five successive 4-week periods starting at sowing,batches of plants were transferred to three growth rooms whosetemperatures were either similar to the outdoor mean (environmentM), or 3° C hotter (environment H) or 3° C colder (environmentC). Some plants were harvested immediately after treatment;others were returned to environment N and harvested when mature. At the end of period 1, sugar-beet plants from environment Mhad more dry weight and leaf area than those outdoors. Immediatelyafter spending later periods in environment M, plants had smallerleaves and similar dry weight to those continuously outdoors.These differences disappeared by maturity. Warmth in the growthrooms (i.e. the difference H—C) during periods 1, 2, and3, while leaf area was increasing, increased the number andsize of leaves and usually also dry weight; in later periodsit had no effect. The effects induced during periods 2 and 3,but not period 1, persisted to maturity to give greater totaland root dry weight and yield of sugar. The final effects ondry weight were much larger than those immediately after treatment,and were the result of differences in growth outdoors aftertreatment which depended on differences in leaf area; the efficiencyof the leaves was not affected by previous treatment. Transferring barley to environment M from N had inconsistentimmediate effects on leaf area and dry weight which disappearedby the final harvest. Transfer during periods 2 and 3, beforethe ears had started emerging, increased shoot number and delayeddevelopment. The proportion of the ears that ripened and theyield of grain were usually less for plants that had spent aperiod in environment M than for plants permanently outdoors,which also had some green ears. Warmth in the growth rooms duringperiods 1 and 2 increased dry weight and leaf area immediately,but had negligible effects at maturity because the increasesin leaf area did not persist after ear emergence. Warmth laterhastened death of leaves, decreased total dry weight immediatelyand also at maturity, but increased the proportion of ears thatripened and hence usually grain weight. Variation in leaf areaduration after ear emergence (D), determined by effects on thetime the ears emerged and the rate the leaves died, accountedfor most of the variation in grain yield, but warmth after theears emerged decreased grain yield less than proportionallyto the decrease in D. Net assimilation rate (E) of sugar-beet was greater than ofbarley, and decreased less with age. E of both species was usuallygreater in environment M than outdoors in spite of less radiation.It was only slightly affected by temperature. Nitrogen and potassium uptake were increased by treatments thatincreased dry weight. The percentage contents suggest that extrauptake was a consequence and not a cause of the increase indry weight.  相似文献

Because species concepts change and world distributions come to be better known, our picture of bryophyte distribution is subject to continual revision. Herzog's masterly phytogeographical analysis is cited as representative of the situation midway between Holmes's time and the present day. The modern position is reviewed, both for the British Isles and on a world-wide scale. The link between taxonomic revisions and distributional studies is explored. The many recent contributions to our knowledge of bryophyte distribution are classified under several distinct heads. Attention is focussed on selected genera of outstanding interest. Finally, brief consideration is given to the wider implications of the various types of distribution study.  相似文献

Abstract Occurrence patterns of parasitic plants are constrained by the distribution of suitable hosts and movement patterns of seed vectors and, accordingly, represent a simplified system to study many aspects of spatial ecology and determinants of distribution. Previous work has focused on the aerially hemiparasitic mistletoes, and it is unclear whether root parasites are affected by similar factors. Here, we evaluate spatial patterns in the root parasitic Santalum lanceolatum in an arid shrubland in north‐western New South Wales, central Australia. In this region, the principal host is a long‐lived nitrogen fixing shrub Acacia tetragonophylla closely associated with ephemeral creek‐lines. The location of 765 individuals of both species was mapped along a 250‐m section of creek‐line using a total survey station, and occurrence patterns of the root parasite related to host distribution and landscape context. We used Ripley's K‐function and the O‐ring statistic to determine whether the distribution of S. lanceolatum was random, aggregated or regular; the spatial scales at which these patterns occurred; and to quantify any spatial associations between the parasite and its host, A. tetragonophylla. While acacias were closely associated with the creek‐line, S. lanceolatum plants were more tightly clustered, displaying significant clustering at two spatial scales (1.2 m and 8.8 m). We suggest that host quality may act as an important constraint, with only those acacias growing in or near the creek‐line being physiologically capable of supporting a parasite to maturity. Insights gained from spatial analysis are used to guide ongoing research in this system, and highlight the utility of the O‐ring statistic for understanding patterns of distribution affected by multiple processes operating at critical scales.  相似文献

Summary

Nectochaete larvae of the ecologically and economically important ragworm, Nereis virens, were exposed to cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and zinc dissolved in seawater to nominal concentrations ranging from 0 to 5000 μg l?1. Copper was the most toxic (mean LC50 of 76.5 μg l?1 ± 95% CI 73.8–79.2 after 96 h exposure) and so was used for subsequent experiments. Exposure of gametes to greater than 500 μg l?1 copper for 2 or 4 h at 10°C prior to fertilization, or a 10 min exposure during fertilization, significantly reduced embryo developmental success. The effect of copper on larval settlement was also assessed using sediment spiked to a range of concentrations (0, 50, 250, 500, 1000 mg kg!1 dry weight). Significantly fewer larvae were found in sediment of $250 mg kg!1 in comparison to the control or the 50 mg kg!1 treatment. Assessment of living larvae also confirmed a significant reduction in settlement, but in all treatments compared to the control, although the number of dead larvae also increased as the concentrations increased. These effects may have important implications for reproductive success and recruitment of N. virens to polluted sediments.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. One of the most widely used techniques to diagnose PD is a Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT) scan to visualise the integrity of the dopaminergic pathways in the brain. Despite this there remains some discussion on the value of SPECT in the differential diagnosis of PD. We did a meta-analysis of all the existing literature on the diagnostic accuracy of both pre- and post-synaptic SPECT imaging in the differential diagnosis of PD.  相似文献
