New land tortoises (Testudines: Testudinidae) from the Miocene of Africa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The described fossil testudinids from the Miocene of Africa are reviewed. Geochelone stromeri sp. nov . is described from Lower Pliocene (Langebaanweg) and Miocene (Namib) specimens. Kinixys erosa , an extant species, is reported from Songhor Hill. Chersina sp. is reported from Arrisdrift. Impregnochelys pachytectis gen. et sp. nov . is described from Rusinga Island, Kenya, and is unique in having the anterior shell opening orientated ventrally and in having struts on the internal surface of the neurals, but shares with Kinixys a unique epiplastron shape, a high number of axillary scutes and unique orientation of the head of the femur.  相似文献

Taxus media cv. Hicksii plants were grown one season under a low and high level of nitrogen fertilization. Before growth in the spring the plants were divided into two groups, one of which was defoliated and the other left intact. The growth and spring utilization of the nitrogen and carbohydrate reserves of defoliated plants were compared to the intact plants 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks after growth started in the spring. The plants were separated into buds (all new growth), roots and stems and analyzed for changes in total nitrogen, basic and non-basic amino acids, hemicelluloses, soluble sugars, organic acids and chlorophyll. The older evergreen needles from plants grown under low nitrogen levels contain 20 % of the carbohydrate and 24% of the nitrogen used in spring growth. The needles from plants grown under high nitrogen levels contained 56% of the carbohydrate and 49% of the nitrogen used in spring growth. Removal of the old needles before spring growth removed this nitrogen and carbohydrate reserve and reduced the total plant chlorophyll content after 6 weeks of growth to 50% of that found in intact plants, with the result that defoliated plants did not show a growth response to nitrogen. Amino acids accumulated in the stems and buds of defoliated plants as carbohydrates became limiting. The defoliated plants removed 25% more available carbohydrates from the roots and stems than intact plants and their buds contained 50% less available carbohydrates. Plants without old needles showed similar growth rates under low and high nitrogen regimes and produced 33% of the dry weight of intact plants grown under high nitrogen levels and 66% of the dry weight of intact plants grown under low nitrogen levels. The old needles of taxus plants contain substantial amounts of reserve nitrogen and carbohydrate and these needles greatly influence the extent and rapidness of growth in the spring. When the needles are removed, the other tissues can supply an adequate amount of nitrogen but the carbohydrate supply becomes limiting for spring growth.  相似文献

From the 16 species of Mitridae described by Linnaeus between the years 1758-71 11 species are considered valid and available for taxonomic use; four specific names have been suppressed by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature for taxonomic usage (1968). One specific name, i.e. Voluta mitra episcopalis Linnaeus, has appeared in various combinations in malacological literature over the years. From the style of listing in the 10th edition of the Systerna Naturae , it is evident that 'episcopalis' has to be treated as of infraspecific rank; there is no evidence that 'episcopalis' is even a valid subspecies of Voluta mitra.
Three holotypes and five lectotypes designated in this paper are extant in the Linnaean collection; illustrations representing three Linnaean species have been selected as lectotypes.  相似文献

A virus with spherical particles c. 28 nm in diameter was sap-transmitted from different cassava (Manihot esculenta) cultivars to a limited range of species in the families Chenopodiaceae and Solanaceae. Cassava seedlings infected by inoculation with sap or with purified virus preparations did not show any symptom, although the virus was readily detected by ELISA or by further inoculations. Leaf extracts from infected Nicotiana benthamiana were infective after dilution of 10--3but not 10--4, and after heating for 10 min at 70°C, but not at 72°C. The virus was purified from N. benthamiana, N. clevelandii or from cassava. On sucrose gradients, the virus particles sediment as three components all containing a protein of mol. wt c. 57000. The genome of the virus is composed of two RNAs of mol. wt c. 2.54 times 106(RNA-1) and 1.44 times 106(RNA-2). RNA-2 was detected in the middle and the bottom nucleoprotein components, and RNA-1 only in the bottom component. An antiserum prepared to purified virus particles was used to readily detect the virus in cassava and other host plants by ELISA and by ISEM. No serological relationship was shown between this virus and eight nepoviruses, including the recently described cassava green mottle nepovirus infecting cassava in the Solomon Islands (Lennon, Aiton & Harrison, 1987). The virus described here is the first nepovirus isolated from cassava in South America, and is named cassava American latent virus.  相似文献
