Water relations and carbon gain are closely related to cushion size in the moss Grimmia pulvinata 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present study of structural and physiological changes during the development of the cushion moss, Grimmia pulvinata , quantifies the size-dependence of various parameters of water relations such as changes in surface: volume ratio ( S/V ) or water loss rates, and also measures net CO2 gas exchange in the light and the dark. Larger cushions had lower S/V values than smaller ones and featured lower rates of area-based evapotranspiration, owing to higher boundary-layer resistance, but did not differ in relative water storage capacity (expressed as a percentage of d. wt). In combination, this leads to considerably longer hydration periods in larger cushions. By contrast, CO2 gas-exchange parameters were negatively correlated with size : larger cushions showed significantly lower (mass-based) rates of net photosynthesis and dark respiration. Using these data, we estimated carbon budgets during a drying cycle as a function of cushion size. When including alternations of dark and light periods, the relationship proved to be rather complicated. Depending on the time of hydration, net carbon budgets not only varied quantitatively with size but sometimes took on both positive and negative values depending on cushion size. We conclude that neglecting plant size can lead to unrepeatable or even misleading results in comparative ecophysiological studies, and therefore urge for adequate attention to be paid to size in these studies. 相似文献

Anatomy of leaf, stem, and root of more than 100 species in subtribe Dendrobiinae (Orchidaceae) was studied with the light microscope to provide a comparative anatomical treatment of these organs, to serve as an independent source of evidence that might be taxonomically important, and to recommend such reinterpretations of existing classifications as are suggested by a phylogenetic assessment of data. We based our classification on that of Rudolf Schlechter as the most complete and widely accepted today. We found that the anatomy of plants in subtribe Dendrobiinae reflects a high degree of morphological diversity, and many of the anatomical characters appear to be homoplasous. When these anatomical data are used to interpret the systematic relationships among the genera, they indicate that Dendrobium is not monophyletic and that Cadetia and Pseuderia are apparently nested within the structure of Dendrobium when section Grastidium is chosen as a functional outgroup. Lack of resolution in the strict consensus tree illustrates the difficulty of determining the phylogenetic relationships of many of Schlechter's sections using anatomical characters. Nevertheless, we recommend that his sectional classification, with appropriate modifications based on available data, be retained for the present, pending a more detailed understanding of the phylogeny of Dendrobiinae based on morphology, micromorphology, anatomy, and DNA studies. 相似文献

The specialist digger wasp Trachypus boharti Rubio‐Espina preys exclusively on males of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica Latreille 1807, although the hunting attacks involve both male and worker bees of S. postica and members of its own species. To understand the mechanism of prey selection, the cuticular hydrocarbon patterns of workers and males of S. postica are analyzed in detail, and the mandibular secretion of males is examined. The cuticular profiles of males and workers are distinctively different. The major group of cuticular compounds, heptacosene isomers, is twice as abundant in workers as in males. There is no clear distinction between worker and male mandibular secretions. Such a distinct and straightforward caste‐specific difference in cuticular hydrocarbons could function as a recognition cue by which T. boharti distinguishes between workers and males of S. postica. 相似文献

1. Fire ants naturally invade some undisturbed ecosystems of high conservation value and may negatively impact co‐occurring ants. 2. Over 3 years, fire ants were added and removed from a longleaf pine savanna ecosystem that naturally supports a low density of fire ants. Impacts on co‐occurring ants were monitored using pitfall traps. 3. Treatments resulted in significant differences in average fire ant abundance across all plots only in the first year of the experiment. Fire ants had little discernible impact. The abundance and species richness of co‐occurring ants in removal plots never differed from unmanipulated control plots. The abundance of co‐occurring ants was very slightly lower and ant species richness was slightly higher where Solenopsis invicta Buren colonies were added, but neither contrast was significant. 4. The poor conditions in this habitat for many native ants may explain this outcome. Abstract A comparison was made of the content of total and some individual fatty acids in grains of nine barley varieties grown at six sites in Belgium. The varieties represented six- and two-rowed winter types and two-rowed spring types. The results showed that the winter types contain more linolenic acid (C18 : 3) than spring types and that six-rowed barleys have less total fatty acids than two-rowed barleys, due mainly to a low concentration of palmitic (C16:0), oleic (CI8 : 1) and linoleic (C18 : 2) acids. Analysis of variance showed that fatty acid content is affected by both the genotype and the environment and multiple regression analysis suggested that weather conditions before and after flowering affected lipid composition. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. In the last ten years microspordia have been recognized as opportunistic pathogens in AIDS patients. The sources of infection and the mechanisms of transmission of these organisms in humans are mostly uncertain. Transmission of invertebrte microsporidia to mammals is normally considered impossible, temperature being a limiting factor for development. Mice treated with cortisone acetate and with cyclosporin A, respectively, as well as athymic mice were injected intravenously, intranasally, perorally and subcutaneously with spores of Nosema algerae , a microsporidian species of culicine mosquitoes. No infection could be detected in tissue samples of cortisone acetate and cyclosporin A treated mice. However, the experimental inoculation of spores into the tail and foot of athymic mice caused severe infection in skeletal muscles and the connective tissue. In some tails, nerve tissue and bone marrow were also infected. Vegetative stages and spores were seen in direct contact to host cell cytoplasma. For the first time the prolonged and progressive development of an invertebrate microsporidium in a mammalian host is shown. The possibility of invertebrate microsporidia as a source of human microsporidiosis should now be taken into consideration. 相似文献

1. Patterns of mite egg consumption by the phytophagous thrips Frankliniella schultzei Trybom were investigated. Although F. schultzei predation is somewhat similar to that of F. occidentalis (Pergande), the understanding of predation by these two phytophagous thrips was extended, allowing the functional significance of flower thrips’ predatory behaviour to be reinterpreted. 2. Second-instar larvae consumed significantly more eggs than any other life-stage, and the daily intake of eggs by second-instar larvae declined significantly with each successive day of the 4-day duration of instar two. 3. Mite eggs that had had their silken webbing removed were consumed at a significantly greater rate than those with their webbing intact. 4. Frankliniella schultzei immatures developed successfully both on diets containing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaf tissue plus mite eggs and on cotton leaf tissue alone. Supplementing a leaf tissue larval diet with mite eggs lowered the developmental time from egg to adult significantly, as well as lowering the percentage mortality. Continuation of the mite egg supplement beyond adult eclosion increased fecundity significantly and extended life span over that achieved on a leaf diet alone. 5. In laboratory choice tests, mite eggs and pollen of Wax Mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus Cav.), the usual host of F. schultzei in Brisbane, were encountered with similar frequencies. Furthermore, the mean proportion of encounters with pollen grains that resulted in consumption of pollen did not differ significantly from the encounter : consumption rate for mite eggs. 6. Frankliniella schultzei, like F. occidentalis, does not seem to be specifically adapted for preying on mite eggs, even though such predation enhances performance and reproductive output of F. schultzei when constrained on cotton leaves. Comparison of performance results with those published for F. schultzei when reared on the floral parts of one of its primary hosts (M. arboreus) (Milne et al., 1996), indicates that mite egg predation does not make up completely for a deficient adult or larval diet. 相似文献

On the basis of floral and vegetative morphology, 63 tropical American genera have been recognized within Maxillarieae. We were able to examine anatomical material of all subtribes, excluding Oncidiinae. Stegmata with conical silica bodies occur in leaves and stems of all subtribes excluding Ornithocephalinae, and pericyclic stegmata found in roots are characteristic of Lycastinae. Lycastinae and Maxillariinae are characterized by foliar glands, foliar fibre bundles and tilosomes. Endodermal cells are U-thickened in most Zygopetalinae; O-thickened in most Lycastinae, Ornithocephalinae and Telipogoninae; variously thickened in Maxillariinae; and thin-walled in Cryptarrhena lunata . Water-storage cells varied from thin-walled to variously banded throughout Maxillarieae.
