Abstract Microdisturbance to seedlings is important because it can differentially affect the mortality and recruitment of seedlings of forest tree species and thereby ultimately affect community composition. Microdisturbance due to litterfall has been shown to vary greatly in its influence on seedling survival among and within forests, and yet there have been no previous studies that investigate the cause of these differences. In this study the influence of macro‐litterfall on seedling damage is investigated in five complex temperate forests in New Zealand. Litterfall damage to artificial seedlings in these forests was strongly correlated with macro‐leaf‐fall (leaves > 30 cm × 1.5 cm) dry weight and total macro‐litterfall (leaves and deadwood > 30 cm × 1.5 cm) surface area (R2 = 0.99, P < 0.005 for each). Protective vegetation within 2 m of the ground (mostly lianes and woody shrubs) reduced the risk of litterfall damage by up to 84%. Hitherto unexplained differences in litterfall damage to seedlings found among, and within, forests (tropical and temperate) may therefore be due to differences in rates of macro‐leaf‐fall and forest structure. These results are important because they suggest that subtle differences in forest structure, and species composition, may influence regeneration patterns through the litterfall microdisturbance regime.  相似文献

Abstract. . The phenomenon of aggregated oviposition in blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions, using wild-caught females of the Simulium damnosum complex in Sierra Leone. A method was developed for inducing Simulium females to lay eggs, and used as a bioassay to measure the responses of gravid S. damnosum s.l. to freshly laid eggs of the same species complex. In a series of two-choice tests, significantly more ovipositing flies chose substrates already containing eggs over control substrates ( P = 0.004). The time from introduction of flies into the oviposition system to the onset of egg-laying was significantly less when eggs were already present ( P = 0.049). Flies responded more quickly when more eggs were present and the relationship between egg-batch number and the time of this response was curvilinear ( P = 0.012). Ecological advantages and disadvantages of such aggregation behaviour and the possible role of semiochemicals in its mediation are discussed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The fine structure of the eugregarine Lankesteria culicis from the larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti was examined by light and electron microscopy and compared with that of other gregarines. The cell organelles found in L. culicis included a nucleus, mitochondria, Golgi-complexes, endoplasmic reticulum, vesicles, droplets, granules and lipid bodies.
The surface of L. culicis was composed of a highly differentiated membrane-cortex, differing slightly from that of other eugregarines. This complex was limited by a unit membrane, the plasmelemma, and underlying cortical laminae which appeared to be composed of several layers. The homogeneous electrondense layer present in Pyxinoides balani was greatly diminished or absent in L. culicis.
A series of laminar folds supported by ground substance and longitudinal subpellicular fibrils gave the organism's surface a ridge-like appearance. Permanent cytostome-like openings in the surface, which appeared to be supported by a narrow band of thickened cortex, were present as specializations of the surfacemembrane complex. The structural composition of the parasite appeared quite striking in that it was made up almost entirely of vesicles, granules, and droplets which were absent only in the area of the protomerite. The mitochondria were usually found just beneath the surface or near the nucleus. Mitochondria were also seen in the region of demarcation between the protomerite and deutomerite.  相似文献
