The role ofH-2 regions in overcoming tissue incompatibility

Neonatal transplantation tolerance to the products of theH-2 ^b complex was induced in B10.A (H-2 ^a ) mice. On the basis of the survival of skin allografts it was found that antigens determined by theD region of theH-2 ^b complex (of the B10.A(2R) strain) were most easily overcome and that tolerance to the products of theD end of theH-2 complex (of the B10.A(4R) strain) was also easy to induce. The antigens produced by theK end ofH-2 (of the B10.A(5R) and B10.A(3R) strains) represented a stronger incompatibility barrier and a difference in the entireH-2 ^b complex caused strongest resistance to tolerance induction. When tolerance to the products of the entireH-2 ^b complex was induced in newborn B10.A mice, and the neonatally treated animals were grafted simultaneously with five different grafts, those disparate at theK end ofH-2 and in the entireH-2 region were rejected in some animals, while the grafts disparate at theD end of H-2 remained intact in the same mice. No dependence on theI-J subregion was observed in this system. Furthermore, tolerance was more easily inducible in male than in female B10.A mice.     

Effect of N-Methyl Substituents in 2-Methoxycarbonylphenylsulfamides on Kinetics and Mechanism of Formation of (1H)-2,1,3-Benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-One-2,2-Dioxides

The cyclization reactions of N-methyl-N’-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)sulfamide (1a), N-methyl-N-(2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-sulfamide (2a), and 2-methoxycarbonylphenylsulfamide (3a) were studied in aqueous amine buffers (butylamine, ethanolamine, morpholine, glycinamide). The dependences observed between the rate constants and buffer concentrations show that the reactions are subject to base catalysis in all the three cases, the decomposition of the tetrahedral intermediate being rate limiting. The ratio of the relative rate constants of the base catalyzed cyclizations reactions of the three derivatives is 1a: 2a: 3a = 1: 20000: 100. The logarithm of rate constants of the base catalyzed cyclization reactions was plotted against the pK_a values of conjugated acids of the individual amines used as the buffers in the cyclization of compound 1a, and the value of the Brönsted coefficient obtained was about 0.1, which means that the proton transfer from the intermediate to the basic buffer component is thermodynamically favorable. The intermediate is a much weaker base, and the reaction is controlled by diffusion. The slope of an analogous dependence for compound 2a gradually decreases from values near to 0.5 to values near to zero, which means that the intermediate formed from compound 2a (pK_a ≈ 9.3) has a pK_a value comparable with that of the acid buffer component.     

Beitrag zur Kenntnis der chemischen Zusammensetzung derPhragmiti-Magnocaricetea und derAgropyro-Rumicion-Arten

Zwanzig Pflanzen der KlassePhragmiti-Magnocaricetea (Kennarten der einzelnen pflanzen-soziologischen Einheiten) und des VerbandesAgropyro-Rumicion crispi wurden den chemischen Analysen unterzogen. Die Pflanzenproben wurden auf den Wiesen der Trockengebiete S-Mährens und der SW-Slowakei gesammelt, u. zw. aus den pflanzensoziologisch, definierbaren Einheiten (Assoziationen der VerbändePhragmition, Caricion gracilis, Caricion rostratae undAgropyro-Rumicion). Die Resultate wurden mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung der in anderen Gebieten vorkommenden Pflanzen verglichen. Es zeigten sich Zusammenhänge zwischen der genetisch bedingten chemischen Zusammensetzung bestimmter Artengruppen und den Eigenschaften des Substrats. In diesem Sinne gibt es allgemeine Unterschiede zwischen den VerbändenCaricion gracilis undCaricion rostratae. Die Arten desAgropyro-Rumicion zeigen im Durchschnitt engere Bindung an die Gesellschaften desCnidion-Verbandes als an dasCaricion gracilis.     

Saprobic sequence within the genus euglena

In total 73 species of Euglena were ordered according to their saprobic index (S) and saprobic valency starting with species tolerating a heavy organic pollution and ending with those from most clean water. This paper is meant as an addition to the Ergebnisse der Limnologie, Heft 7 (Sládeek, 1973).     

Synthesis of a series of fully methylated aldobiouronic acids,and β-elimination reactions of their synthetic precursors

Treatment of methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-l-bromo-l-deoxy-α-d-glucopyranuronate severally with 2,4,6-, 2,3,6-, and 2,3,4-tri-O-methyl derivatives of methyl α-d-glucopyranoside and with methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-3-O-methyl-α-d-glucopyranoside, in the presence of silver carbonate, afforded crystalline aldobiouronic acid derivatives in high yield. Deacetylation followed by methylation gave a series of fully methylated derivatives of laminaribiouronic, cellobiouronic, and gentiobiouronic acids, and the (1 → 2)-linked analogue. Methylation with methyl iodide and silver oxide in N,N-dimethylformamide was invariably accompanied by a small amount ofβ-elimination, with the formation of olefinic disaccharides which were also obtained by β-elimination reactions of the precursor acetates followed by methylation. Methyl 4,5-unsaturated 4-deoxyhexopyranosyluronate derivatives were the main products of the reaction, but these underwent further degradation with cleavage of the interglycosidic linkage and formation of 6-methoxycarbonyl-4-pyrone.
