Despite growing insights into the secular practices of former socialist states, we are yet to grasp fully their resonance in religious lives. Taking socialist modernity and Old Belief as distinct ethical projects, in this article I discuss the ethical engagements of Russian Old Believers in socialist Romania as reflected in individual biographies. Their struggle to maintain an ascetic Orthodox culture in the midst of an intrusive atheist state was at odds with the urge to join a modernizing project that preached the collective good. This tension was managed through a temporary ‘secularization’ which allowed for differentiated generational commitments and the successful reproduction of their tradition within the socialist system. Old Believers’ return to the church in old age reveals their attempt to shape their lives through ethical action based on the obligation to continuity, to carry on the old faith. It shows how the pursuit of continuity in the Old Belief is a virtuous practice leading to moral exemplarity in a space of equivocal moralities.  相似文献

Discovering cryptic species in well‐studied areas and taxonomic groups can have profound implications in understanding eco‐evolutionary processes and in nature conservation because such groups often involve research models and act as flagship taxa for nature management. In this study, we use an array of techniques to study the butterflies in the Spialia sertorius species group (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae). The integration of genetic, chemical, cytogenetic, morphological, ecological and microbiological data indicates that the sertorius species complex includes at least five species that differentiated during the last three million years. As a result, we propose the restitution of the species status for two taxa often treated as subspecies, Spialia ali (Oberthür, 1881) stat. rest. and Spialia therapne (Rambur, 1832) stat. rest., and describe a new cryptic species Spialia rosae Hernández‐Roldán, Dapporto, Dinc?, Vicente & Vila sp. nov. Spialia sertorius (Hoffmannsegg, 1804) and S. rosae are sympatric and synmorphic, but show constant differences in mitochondrial DNA, chemical profiles and ecology, suggesting that S. rosae represents a case of ecological speciation involving larval host plant and altitudinal shift, and apparently associated with Wolbachia infection. This study exemplifies how a multidisciplinary approach can reveal elusive cases of hidden diversity.  相似文献

A number of peripheral membrane proteins functioning as regulatory enzymes are distributed between soluble and particulate fractions upon homogenization and subcellular fractionation. One such enzyme, the Ca2+/phospholipid-dependent protein kinase, protein kinase C, was analyzed in order to examine this characteristic of differential localization. The soluble and particulate forms of this enzyme were purified to relative homogeneity, and their biochemical and biophysical properties were analyzed and compared. Based on biochemical activities, the particulate form required lower phospholipid concentrations for maximal activation than for the soluble species. The particulate species had a more hydrophobic structure as demonstrated by a hydrophobic fluorescence probe, and had almost 50% more -helical structures according to secondary structure estimation, determined from far ultra-violet-circular dichroism spectra (200–250 nm). Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, specific lipid spectra were detected associated with the soluble protein kinase C species. Further analyses with a fluorescent neutral membrane probe suggested that there was more lipid associated with the purified particulate form, which was of a less mobile nature than those associated with the soluble species. These structural differences provide an explanation for the preferential localization of the enzyme and may prove to be the basis for distribution of other membrane-active peripheral membrane regulatory enzymes.  相似文献

Pimozide was tried in the treatment of delusion of parasitosis (a type of monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis), a syndrome that is found with increasing frequency. Ten patients were selected on the basis of unambiguously defined psychopathological criteria. Pimozide therapy was assessed by means of placebo control and the double-blind method using a rating scale evolved for this particular therapy. The results have quite definitely proved the effect of small doses (two to eight mg per day) of pimozide compared to the administration of a placebo. The very few side-effects observed could easily be influenced. The dynamics of the regression of the psychopathological symptoms suggest that the efficacy of pimozide therapy is decisively linked to the central dopamine receptor blocking effect of the drug.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the applications of nonlinear age-dependent dynamics to population genetics. Age-structured models are formulated for a single autosomal locus with an arbitrary number of alleles. The following cases are considered: a) haploid populations with selection and mutation; b) monoecious diploid populations with or without mutation reproducing by self-fertilization or by two types of random mating. The diploid models do not deal with selection. For these cases the genic and genotypic frequencies evolve towards time-persistent forms, whether the total population size tends towards exponential growth or not.  相似文献

Recent studies on the Lower Cretaceous deposits located in various areas of the Romanian Carpathians resulted in the identification of several specimens of dasycladalean algae assigned to the genus Triploporella including Triploporella carpatica Bucur, Triploporella cf. praturlonii Barattolo, Triploporella cf. steinmannii Barattolo, Triploporella sp. 1, Triploporella sp. 2, and Triploporella n. sp. This paper provides arguments on their taxonomic assignment, together with discussions on the Triploporella species described in the literature and their paleobiogeographic significance.  相似文献

Satyrinae butterflies occurring in the Mediterranean apparently have reduced gene flow over sea straits, and for several species, recent wide-scale biodiversity surveys indicate the existence of divergent mitochondrial lineages. Here, we apply an integrative approach and examine the phylogeography of the genus Lasiommata in the Western Palearctic. Our research comprised molecular analyses (mitochondrial and nuclear DNA) and geometric morphometrics (wings and genitalia) for two main species groups, and a comparative GMYC analysis, based on COI, of all the tribes within Satyrinae from this region. The GMYC approach revealed a particularly fast coalescence rate in the Parargina subtribe. The Lasiommata group was divided into 12 evolutionary significant units: six clades for the L. maera species group, five for the L. megera species group, and one for L. petropolitana, with divergences of about 1%. The patterns of COI were mirrored by ITS2 in L. maera, but the two markers were generally inconsistent in L. megera. On the contrary, morphological differences were coherent with the results of COI for L. megera, but less clearly so for L. maera. L. paramegaera and L. meadewaldoi were considerably differentiated for all the analyzed markers and likely proceeded faster in the process of speciation because of geographic isolation and reduced effective population size, rendering the rest paraphyletic. Our study illustrates the continuous nature of speciation and the difficulties of delimiting species. In Lasiommata, the recognition of taxa as diverging lineages or distinct, possibly paraphyletic species, mostly depends on the criteria adopted by different species concepts.  相似文献

Genome scans in recently separated species can inform on molecular mechanisms and evolutionary processes driving divergence. Large‐scale polymorphism data from multiple species pairs are also key to investigate the repeatability of divergence—whether radiations tend to show parallel responses to similar selection pressures and/or underlying molecular forces. Here, we used whole‐genome resequencing data from six wood white (Leptidea sp.) butterfly populations, representing three closely related species with karyomorph variation, to infer the species' demographic history and characterize patterns of genomic diversity and differentiation. The analyses supported previously established species relationships, and there was no evidence for postdivergence gene flow. We identified significant intraspecific genetic structure, in particular between karyomorph extremes in the wood white (L. sinapis)—a species with a remarkable chromosome number cline across the distribution range. The genomic landscapes of differentiation were erratic, and outlier regions were narrow and dispersed. Highly differentiated (FST) regions generally had low genetic diversity (θπ), but increased absolute divergence (DXY) and excess of rare frequency variants (low Tajima's D). A minority of differentiation peaks were shared across species and population comparisons. However, highly differentiated regions contained genes with overrepresented functions related to metabolism, response to stimulus and cellular processes, indicating recurrent directional selection on a specific set of traits in all comparisons. In contrast to the majority of genome scans in recently diverged lineages, our data suggest that divergence landscapes in Leptidea have been shaped by directional selection and genetic drift rather than stable recombination landscapes and/or introgression.  相似文献

One strategy evolved by teeth to avoid irreversible damage is to move and deform under the loads incurred during mastication. A key component in this regard is the periodontal ligament (PDL). The role of the bone underlying the PDL is less well defined. We study the interplay between the PDL and the underlying alveolar bone when loaded in the minipig. Using an Instron loading device we confirmed that the force-displacement curves of the molars and premolars of relatively fresh minipig intact mandibles are similar to those obtained for humans and other animals. We then used this information to obtain 3D images of the teeth before and after loading the tooth in a microCT such that the load applied is in the third linear part of the force displacement curve. We observed that at many locations there is a complimentary topography of the cementum and alveolar bone surface, strongly suggesting an active interplay between the tooth and the bone during mastication. We also observed that the loaded tooth does not come into direct contact with the underlying bone surface. A highly compressed layer of PDL is present between the tooth and the bone. The structure of the bone in the upper furcation region has a unique appearance with little obvious microstructure, abundant pores that have a large size range and at many locations the bone at the PDL interface has a needle-like shape. We conclude that there is a close interaction between the tooth, the PDL and the underlying alveolar bone during mastication. The highly compressed PDL layer that separates the tooth from the bone may fulfill a key shock absorbing function.  相似文献

The survival and growth of the pathogen Helicobacter pylori in the gastric acidic environment is ensured by the activity of urease, an enzyme containing two essential Ni2? ions in the active site. The metallo-chaperone UreE facilitates in vivo Ni2? insertion into the apoenzyme. Crystals of apo-HpUreE (H. pylori UreE) and its Ni?- and Zn?-bound forms were obtained from protein solutions in the absence and presence of the metal ions. The crystal structures of the homodimeric protein, determined at 2.00 ? (apo), 1.59 ? (Ni2?) and 2.52 ? (Zn2?) resolution, show the conserved proximal and solvent-exposed His1?2 residues from two adjacent monomers invariably involved in metal binding. The C-terminal regions of the apoprotein are disordered in the crystal, but acquire significant ordering in the presence of the metal ions due to the binding of His1?2. The analysis of X-ray absorption spectral data obtained using solutions of Ni2?- and Zn2?-bound HpUreE provided accurate information of the metal-ion environment in the absence of solid-state effects. These results reveal the role of the histidine residues at the protein C-terminus in metal-ion binding, and the mutual influence of protein framework and metal-ion stereo-electronic properties in establishing co-ordination number and geometry leading to metal selectivity.  相似文献
