The genus Pseustes Fitzinger, 1843 is composed of three recognized species, Pseustes poecilonotus, P. shropshirei and P. sulphureus, which may be the largest sized colubrid snake in the New World. The group has a complex systematic history that has yet to be untangled using modern molecular phylogenetic approaches. The systematic position, within‐group diversity and distribution are therefore uncertain. We obtained samples of four species from multiple specimens across their distribution and analysed one nuclear and two mitochondrial genes to determine the phylogenetic placement of the genus and infer relationships among Pseustes lineages. We find strong support for the paraphyly of Pseustes with respect to the monotypic genus Spilotes, both of which are nested within a clade of at least 23 other New World Colubrinae genera. Based on our results, we formally revise the taxonomy of P. poecilonotus and P. sulphureus, resurrecting the taxon P. polylepis for populations of P. poecilonotus from South America and allocating P. sulphureus to the genus Spilotes which renders both genera monophyletic. Additionally, we identify two lineages that are putatively new and currently unrecognized species. Finally, the placement of P. sulphureus, the type species of Pseustes, in the genus Spilotes, requires the allocation of the senior synonym Phrynonax be considered for the remaining Pseustes taxa.  相似文献

The ability of the broad-headed skink (Eumeces laticeps) to follow conspecific odor trails on paper substrates was investigated in y-maze experiments. Adult males enter the trail-containing arm at much greater than chance frequency when the odor source is female. The data support the hypothesis that males can follow odor trails of females. The often-repeated direct contact with the trail made by tongue-flicking as the lizard passed through the maze provided evidence that males could follow the scent. There was no evidence that males followed male odors or that females followed trails laid by either sex. It is suggested that the major selective force leading to evolution by males of the ability to trail females was an increase in reproductive success accruing to males able to locate females and guard them during a temporally limited period of sexual receptivity.  相似文献

The effect of abscisic acid on growth, ultrastructure and nucleic acid biosynthesis was studied in tissue culture of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Low concentration (0.01 mg l?1) of abscisic acid increased fresh and dry weight of calluses, whereas 1.0 mg l?1 was inhibitory. The stimulating effect was observed only in the presence of a relatively high concentration of kinetin (1 mg l?1). The inhibitory effect was partly overcome by the same kinetin concentration. The low concentration of abscisic acid probably accelerated the induction of callus growth after subculture and stimulated cell division in the exponential phase of growth. Electron microscopy showed the presence of numerous polysomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum in callus cells grown at the stimulating abscisic acid concentration. Control cells and cells at the inhibitory concentration had slightly hyaline cytoplasm and were more vacuolated. Incubation of callus tissue with 32P in the presence of stimulating concentration of abscisic acid showed a significant increase in the rate of biosynthesis of all nucleic acid classes after 8 h, whereas inhibitory concentration produced a decrease in 32P incorporation. However, when the tissue was grown in the presence of abscisic acid for 20 days, both concentrations decreased the rate of nucleic acid biosynthesis, as compared to the controls.  相似文献

The complete mechanistic sequence of the atropo-diastereoselective ring opening reaction of configuratively unstable lactone-bridged biaryls with the chiral 2R,5R-1-lithio-2,5-dimethylpyrrolidine was calculated using the semiempirical PM3 method. It was shown that the stereochemically deciding key step of the reaction sequence is the first attack of the chiral nucleophile to the carbon atom of the lactone moiety. The diastereoselectivity of this synthetically useful and mechanistically challenging biaryl synthesis was found to originate from a dynamic kinetic resolution of the axially chiral, but configuratively unstable lactone substrates. For a further understanding of the complex stereochemical process, the geometries resulting from IRC-calculations have been visualized and are presented as an Quicktime-movie.  相似文献

The transformations of propane and cycloalkanes into dialkyl (dicycloalkyl) sulfides under the action of elemental sulfur were achieved for the first time under very mild conditions. Sulfur is converted completely into dicylclopentylsulfide in the reaction with cyclopentane in the presence of CX4 · nAlBr3 (X = Cl, Br; n = 2 or 3) at −20°C for 20 min. Propane forms 1Pr2S in 60% yield at 20°C after 2 h. Sulfurization of adamantane occurs in the presence of the milder electrophilic system CH2Br2---AlBr3 at 20°C to afford approximately equal amounts of Ad2S isomers and 1-AdSMe with the overall yield of sulfurization products of 60%.  相似文献

Ongoing human infections with highly pathogenic avian H5N1 viruses and the emergence of the pandemic swine‐origin influenza viruses (IV) highlight the permanent threat elicited by these pathogens. Occurrence of resistant seasonal and pandemic strains against the currently licensed antiviral medications points to the urgent need for new and amply available anti‐influenza drugs. The recently identified virus‐supportive function of the cellular IKK/NF‐κB signalling pathway suggests this signalling module as a potential target for antiviral intervention. We characterized the NF‐κB inhibitor SC75741 as a broad and efficient blocker of IV replication in non‐toxic concentrations. The underlying molecular mechanism of SC75741 action involves impaired DNA binding of the NF‐κB subunit p65, resulting in reduced expression of cytokines, chemokines, and pro‐apoptotic factors, subsequent inhibition of caspase activation and block of caspase‐mediated nuclear export of viralribonucleoproteins. SC75741 reduces viral replication and H5N1‐induced IL‐6 and IP‐10 expression in the lung of infected mice. Besides its virustatic effect the drug suppresses virus‐induced overproduction of cytokines and chemokines, suggesting that it might prevent hypercytokinemia that is discussed to be an important pathogenicity determinant of highly pathogenic IV. Importantly the drug exhibits a high barrier for development of resistant virus variants. Thus, SC75741‐derived drugs may serve as broadly non‐toxic anti‐influenza agents.  相似文献

The experimental Sandhill Wetland is the first permanent reclamation of a composite tailings deposit, and annual water quality monitoring is of specific interest for evaluating and predicting long-term reclamation performance. Here, we present water chemistry monitoring data obtained from Sandhill Wetland (years 2009–2019) and compare results to twelve natural reference wetlands and to environmental quality guidelines for Alberta surface waters. By comparing water quality at Sandhill Wetland and natural sites to established guidelines, we can begin to document the natural background water quality of wetlands in the region and examine if guideline exceedances are seen in natural undisturbed environments, or appear only at active reclamation sites. At Sandhill Wetland the dominant ions in near-surface water were bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Since the first growing season concentrations for these ions have increased annually, causing concurrent increases in electrical conductivity. In year 2019, water chemistry at Sandhill Wetland was most comparable to regional saline fens, systems that exhibit elevated electrical conductivity and high sodicity. Near-surface water at Sandhill Wetland exceeded water quality guidelines for three substances/properties (dissolved chloride, iron, and total alkalinity) in the most recent year of monitoring. The saline fen natural sites also exceeded water quality guidelines for the same chemical substances/properties, suggesting guideline exceedances are a norm for some natural wetland site types in the region. Of note, in each year of monitoring at Sandhill Wetland, dissolved organic compounds evaluated in sub- and near-surface water were below detection limits.
