Biological impacts of climate warming are predicted to increase with latitude, paralleling increases in warming. However, the magnitude of impacts depends not only on the degree of warming but also on the number of species at risk, their physiological sensitivity to warming and their options for behavioural and physiological compensation. Lizards are useful for evaluating risks of warming because their thermal biology is well studied. We conducted macrophysiological analyses of diurnal lizards from diverse latitudes plus focal species analyses of Puerto Rican Anolis and Sphaerodactyus. Although tropical lowland lizards live in environments that are warm all year, macrophysiological analyses indicate that some tropical lineages (thermoconformers that live in forests) are active at low body temperature and are intolerant of warm temperatures. Focal species analyses show that some tropical forest lizards were already experiencing stressful body temperatures in summer when studied several decades ago. Simulations suggest that warming will not only further depress their physiological performance in summer, but will also enable warm-adapted, open-habitat competitors and predators to invade forests. Forest lizards are key components of tropical ecosystems, but appear vulnerable to the cascading physiological and ecological effects of climate warming, even though rates of tropical warming may be relatively low.  相似文献

Oswaldocruzia nicaraguensis n. sp. (Strongylida: Molineidae) from the intestines of Ameiva festiva (Sauria: Teiidae) is described and illustrated. Oswaldocruzia nicaraguensis represents the 78th species assigned to the genus and is most similar to the Caribbean species of the genus by possessing spicules in which each of the 3 divisions terminates in numerous fine points. Of the 8 species assigned to this group, O. nicaraguensis is most similar to Oswaldocruzia moraveci; of the 8 species, only O. moraveci and O. nicaraguensis possess a type II bursa and lack cervical alae. It is separated from O. moraveci by the position of the tips of ribs 5-6; close together in O. nicaraguensis, well separated in O. moraveci.  相似文献

In this report we describe the analysis of an advanced intercross line (AIL) to confirm the quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions found for fatness traits in a previous study. QTL analysis was performed on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 15, 18, and 27. The AIL was created by random intercrossing in each generation from generation 2 (G2) onwards until generation 9 (G9) was reached. QTL for abdominal fat weight (AFW) and/or percentage abdominal fat (AF%) on chromosomes 1, 3 and 27 were confirmed in the G9 population. In addition, evidence for QTL for body weight at the age of 5 (BW5) and 7 (BW7) weeks and for the percentage of intramuscular fat (IF%) were found on chromosomes 1, 3, 15, and 27. Significant evidence for QTL was detected on chromosome 1 for BW5 and BW7. Suggestive evidence was found on chromosome 1 for AFW, AF% and IF%, on chromosome 15 for BW5, and on chromosome 27 for AF% and IF%. Furthermore, evidence on the chromosome-wise level was found on chromosome 3 for AFW, AF%, and BW7 and on chromosome 27 for BW5. For chromosomes 4 and 18, test statistics did not exceed the significance threshold.  相似文献

Recent surveys of peatland initiation that occurred over the past 10,000 years in northeastern Alberta have revealed that most peatlands initiated by paludification, or swamping of upland soils. Peatland ecologists have long known the importance of the paludification process, but it has not been transferred to peatland restoration methodologies. We initiated this study to determine if wetland structure and function could be re-established on two well sites established with mineral fill within a peatland complex. At two well sites near Peace River, AB, the mineral material was lowered to near the water level of the surrounding peatland. We placed 288 plots of 2 m × 2 m in size using a series of fertilizer, water level, cultivation, and amendment treatments and then introduced a suite of wetland plants. Four questions are addressed: - (1) Will locally available peatland vascular plant species establish on these wet, compacted, mineral soils? If so: (2) are species responses affected by these treatments? (3) are plants that we did not introduce in the planting regime (weeds) a concern? and (4) will the surrounding bog water chemistry have an effect on water in contact with mineral soils? Results after two growing seasons are - (1) Carex aquatilis and Salix lutea have all successfully established at both well sites; (2) C. aquatilis plants (ramets) have increased to an average of 58.5 per plot, up from the 16 original genets planted; (3) the plant responses to amendments are not significantly different from the control plots; (4) weed abundance is significantly different among some amendment types; and (5) pad ditch water chemistry is affected by the surrounding bog waters.  相似文献

We report on a hit generation and hit-to-lead program of a novel class of glucokinase activators (GKAs). Hit compounds, activators at low glucose concentration only were identified by vHTS. Scaffold modification reliably afforded activators also at high substrate level. Potency was increased by introduction of a hydrogen bond acceptor as proposed by molecular docking. Replacement of the initial alkylene linkers with a rigid 1,2-phenylene motif followed by further studies eventually furnished a series of potent lead compounds exhibiting steep SAR.  相似文献

Canadian wetlands: Environmental gradients and classification   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

The Canadian Wetland Classification System is based on manifestations of ecological processes in natural wetland ecosystems. It is hierarchical in structure and designed to allow identification at the broadest levels (class, form, type) by non-experts in different disciplines. The various levels are based on broad physiognomy and hydrology (classes); surface morphology (forms); and vegetation physiognomy (types). For more detailed studies, appropriate characterization and subdivisions can be applied. For ecological studies the wetlands can be further characterized by their chemical environment, each with distinctive indicator species, acidity, alkalinity, and base cation content. For peatlands, both chemical and vegetational differences indicate that the primary division should be acidic, Sphagnum-dominated bogs and poor fens on one hand and circumneutral to alkaline, brown moss-dominated rich fens on the other. Non peat-forming wetlands (marshes, swamps) lack the well developed bryophyte ground layer of the fens and bogs, and are subject to severe seasonal water level fluctuations. The Canadian Wetland Classification System has been successfully used in Arctic, Subarctic, Boreal and Temperate regions of Canada.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of follicular exposure in vitro to either of two mutually exclusive isoforms of FSH (least acidic and acid) on the subsequent capacity of oocytes for embryonic development. The effects of dose and follicle culture duration were examined. At the threshold dose (that required to produce antra) and at one subthreshold dose, the major difference between the two isoform fractions was the timing and effectiveness of acquisition of two-cell embryonic developmental capacity. With the least-acidic fraction, the highest rate of two-cell development (approximately 80%) occurred after 3 days of follicle culture only at the threshold dose (2.5 ng/ml). With the acid fraction, the highest two-cell rate (approximately 60%) occurred after 5 days of culture but at equivalent rates over a range of doses between 10 ng/ml and 100 ng/ml (threshold dose was 50 ng/ml). At threshold dose or below, the capacity for two-cell embryo production appeared not to be influenced by antral status for either isoform. At above threshold doses, the least-acidic fraction induced an increasing proportion of antral follicles with increasing dose, but this increase was associated with a progressive decrease in embryo production. This relationship was more extreme after longer culture and was due to degeneration of the cumulus-oocyte complex associated with apparently increased differentiation of the mural granulosa cells. The acid fraction was by comparison less bioactive and insensitive to overdosing. The broader isoform mix of the unfractionated FSH provided a measure of protection against overdosing characteristic of the acid fraction while retaining the capacity of the least-acidic fraction to induce antral formation at a low dose.  相似文献

Rhabdias nicaraguensis n. sp. (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae) from the lungs of Norops capito (Sauria: Polychrotidae) is described and illustrated. Rhabdias nicaraguensis n. sp. represents the 54th species assigned to the genus and the 12th from the Neotropical realm. Of the 12 Neotropical Rhabdias species, nicaraguensis is most similar to tobagoensis and vellardi. These 3 species have equatorial placement of the vulva, inflated cuticle, and 6 small circumoral lips. Rhabdias nicaraguensis is easily separated from R. tobagoensis by the shape of the buccal cavity and from R. vellardi by body size and shape of the tail. Rhabdias nicaraguensis differs from both species by host preference, the amount of inflated cuticle covering the body, and the phasmids situated posterior to the midpoint of the tail.  相似文献
