Background

The Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome was first recognized in 1975. After the recognition of the Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome, ten cases have been described.

Case presentation

This article describes the eleventh case of this syndrome in a male patient, 24 years-old with short stature and microcephaly with mild cognitive impairment, deafness and allergic conjunctivitis. The patient was hospitalized several times for repeated infections, and the presence of multiple melanocytic nevi on his skin was noticed.

Conclusions

Based on the entire set of signs and symptoms presented in our study, it was diagnosed the patient with Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome.  相似文献

Fusarium verticillioides is a widely distributed fungus that can associate with maize as a deleterious pathogen and an advantageous endophyte. Here, we show that seed treatment with live Fverticillioides enhances maize resistance to secondary stalk rot infection and further demonstrate that dead Fverticillioides is sufficient to equivalently reduce Fverticillioides biomass. Seed treatment with live or dead Fverticillioides primes maize plants, and upon subsequent stalk infection, terpenoid phytoalexins accumulate faster than control‐treated plants. Seed treatment did not constitutively activate plant defences nor did it impact plant growth. These results suggest that seed treatment with dead Fverticillioides can be used as a ‘vaccination’ method to decrease the severity of stalk rot and potentially pathogen infection throughout the plant.  相似文献

Internet-based systems for epidemiological studies have advantages over traditional approaches as they can potentially recruit and monitor a wider range of individuals in a relatively inexpensive fashion. We studied the association between communication strategies used for recruitment (offline, online, face-to-face) and follow-up participation in nine Internet-based cohorts: the Influenzanet network of platforms for influenza surveillance which includes seven cohorts in seven different European countries, the Italian birth cohort Ninfea and the New Zealand birth cohort ELF. Follow-up participation varied from 43% to 89% depending on the cohort. Although there were heterogeneities among studies, participants who became aware of the study through an online communication campaign compared with those through traditional offline media seemed to have a lower follow-up participation in 8 out of 9 cohorts. There were no clear differences in participation between participants enrolled face-to-face and those enrolled through other offline strategies. An Internet-based campaign for Internet-based epidemiological studies seems to be less effective than an offline one in enrolling volunteers who keep participating in follow-up questionnaires. This suggests that even for Internet-based epidemiological studies an offline enrollment campaign would be helpful in order to achieve a higher participation proportion and limit the cohort attrition.  相似文献

We investigated the flow modifications induced by a large panel of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) intracranial stents in an idealized sidewall intracranial aneurysm (IA). Flow velocities in IA silicone model were assessed with and without stent implantation using particle imaging velocimetry (PIV). The use of the recently developed multi-time-lag method has allowed for uniform and precise measurements of both high and low velocities at IA neck and dome, respectively. Flow modification analysis of both regular (RSs) and flow diverter stents (FDSs) was subsequently correlated with relevant geometrical stent parameters. Flow reduction was found to be highly sensitive to stent porosity variations for regular stents RSs and moderately sensitive for FDSs. Consequently, two distinct IA flow change trends, with velocity reductions up to 50% and 90%, were identified for high-porosity RS and low-porosity FDS, respectively. The intermediate porosity (88%) regular braided stent provided the limit at which the transition in flow change trend occurred with a flow reduction of 84%. This transition occurred with decreasing stent porosity, as the driving force in IA neck changed from shear stress to differential pressure. Therefore, these results suggest that stents with intermediate porosities could possibly provide similar flow change patterns to FDS, favourable to curative thrombogenesis in IAs.  相似文献

Protein folding occurs in a very high dimensional phase space with an exponentially large number of states, and according to the energy landscape theory it exhibits a topology resembling a funnel. In this statistical approach, the folding mechanism is unveiled by describing the local minima in an effective one-dimensional representation. Other approaches based on potential energy landscapes address the hierarchical structure of local energy minima through disconnectivity graphs. In this paper, we introduce a metric to describe the distance between any two conformations, which also allows us to go beyond the one-dimensional representation and visualize the folding funnel in 2D and 3D. In this way it is possible to assess the folding process in detail, e.g., by identifying the connectivity between conformations and establishing the paths to reach the native state, in addition to regions where trapping may occur. Unlike the disconnectivity maps method, which is based on the kinetic connections between states, our methodology is based on structural similarities inferred from the new metric. The method was developed in a 27-mer protein lattice model, folded into a 3×3×3 cube. Five sequences were studied and distinct funnels were generated in an analysis restricted to conformations from the transition-state to the native configuration. Consistent with the expected results from the energy landscape theory, folding routes can be visualized to probe different regions of the phase space, as well as determine the difficulty in folding of the distinct sequences. Changes in the landscape due to mutations were visualized, with the comparison between wild and mutated local minima in a single map, which serves to identify different trapping regions. The extension of this approach to more realistic models and its use in combination with other approaches are discussed.  相似文献

The high complexity of naturally occurring microbial communities is the major drawback limiting the study of these important biological systems. In this study, a comparison between pure cultures of Pseudomonas reinekei sp. strain MT1 and stable community cultures composed of MT1 plus the addition of Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain MT3 (in a steady‐state proportion 9:1) was used as a model system to study bacterial interactions that take place under simultaneous chemical and oxidative stress. Both are members of a real community isolated from a polluted sediment by enrichment in 4‐chlorosalicylate (4CS). The analysis of dynamic states was carried out at the proteome, metabolic profile and population dynamic level. Differential protein expression was evaluated under exposure to 4CS and high concentrations of toxic intermediates (4‐chlorocatechol and protoanemonin), including proteins from several functional groups and particularly enzymes of aromatic degradation pathways and outer membrane proteins. Remarkably, 4CS addition generated a strong oxidative stress response in pure strain MT1 culture led by alkyl hydroperoxide reductase, while the community showed an enhanced central metabolism response, where A. xylosoxidans MT3 helped to prevent toxic intermediate accumulation. A significant change in the outer membrane composition of P. reinekei MT1 was observed during the chemical stress caused by 4CS and in the presence of A. xylosoxidans MT3, highlighting the expression of the major outer membrane protein OprF, tightly correlated to 4CC concentration profile and its potential detoxification role.  相似文献

Hydrogenases catalyze the reversible oxidation of molecular hydrogen (H(2)), but little is known about the diffusion of H(2) toward the active site. Here we analyze pathways for H(2) permeation using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in explicit solvent. Various MD simulation replicates were done, to improve the sampling of the system states. H(2) easily permeates hydrogenase in every simulation and it moves preferentially in channels. All H(2) molecules that reach the active site made their approach from the side of the Ni ion. H(2) is able to reach distances of <4 A from the active site, although after 6 A permeation is difficult. In this region we mutated Val-67 into alanine and perform new MD simulations. These simulations show an increase of H(2) inside the protein and at lower distances from the active site. This valine can be a control point in the H(2) access to the active center.  相似文献

Purpose

Renewable energy sources, particularly biofuels, are being promoted as possible solutions to address global warming and the depletion of petroleum resources. In this context, biodiesel is a solution to the growing demand for renewable fuels. Beef tallow is the second leading raw material after soybean oil used in biodiesel production in Brazil. Evaluating and addressing the environmental impacts of beef tallow biodiesel are of great importance for its life cycle impact assessment (LCIA).

Methods

Inventory data on tallow and biodiesel production were collected from the literature and from a primary data source provided by a Brazilian biodiesel plant. The modeled system represents the Brazilian reality for the 2005–2015 decade. Subsequently, the environmental impacts of beef tallow biodiesel production were characterized for a selection of environmental impact indicators: global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), and water footprint (assessed based on blue water use (BWU) and blue water consumption (BWC) indicators). From the characterization of these environmental burdens, the main sources of environmental impact were evaluated. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to verify the influence of key parameters (emission factor, energy consumption, and prices) on changes in the environmental load of beef tallow biodiesel.

Results and discussion

Carbon flux results indicate that beef tallow biodiesel production acts as a carbon source. Namely, pasture carbon uptake (91% of all carbon input) is lower than combined biogenic and fossil CO2 emissions, which are controlled by cattle enteric fermentation as methane (72%) and by thermal energy processes (25%). Otherwise, thermal energy production accounts for 80% of total AP emissions, and cattle urine and manure are responsible for 70% of total EP emissions. The BWC and BWU water footprints of the whole process are controlled by electricity usage, which was greater than 90% for each indicator due to the high proportion of total energy (70%) derived from hydropower in Brazil. The environmental burden from transportation is minimal compared to other processes. Tallow biodiesel GWP can be improved if the carbon uptake potential from grass and low fertilizer utilization are accurately considered, as observed in the sensitivity analysis. For each MJ of beef tallow biodiesel produced, 4.6 g of CO2 is released to the atmosphere.

Conclusions

Methane emissions, mainly due to cattle enteric fermentation, and thermal energy processes at the industrial units were the main sources of environmental GWP, AP, and EP impacts. Otherwise, water footprint indicators were associated with the high proportion of total energy derived from hydropower in Brazil.

There is an enormous diversity in the structure of the flower palate of the carnivorous rootless genus Utricularia. This study aims to examine the structure of the palates in Utricularia bremii Heer and U. minor L of the Utricularia sect. Utricularia, which have a glandular palate type. In both species, the palate has only one type of glandular trichomes. Because of the occurrence of cell wall ingrowths in its glandular cells, any exudation may be transported via eccrinous secretion. It was proposed that the palate trichomes of the examined species act as scent glands and that the palate may play a role as an unguentarium. Both U. bremii and U. minor are of an open flower type. Thus, U. bremii and U. minor flowers can be penetrated by small, weak insects, which then easily have access to their generative structure. Small Hymenoptera (member of families Mymaridae and Braconidae) were observed as flower visitors of the male-sterile species Utricularia bremii.  相似文献
