Arsenic is a critical contaminant that is released into the environment through geochemical processes and anthropic actions. Two independent hydroponic experiments were performed to evaluate the ecophysiological responses of water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] to As under various stress conditions. In experiment 1, water hyacinth was exposed to As5+ at concentrations of 0, 0.2, 2.0, and 20 mg L?1 for 0, 2, and 4 d; in experiment 2, water hyacinth was exposed at concentrations of 0, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 mg L?1 for 0, 10, and 20 d. In both experiments, As accumulation in plant tissue was proportional to its increase in the nutrient solution; As concentrations were higher in roots than in shoots. Detrimental effects of As on gas exchange were observed and were more pronounced in experiment 1. In experiment 1, at the beginning on the second day of exposure, significant decreases of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), variable chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/F0), and photosynthetic pigment contents were observed in plants exposed to 2.0 and 20 mg(As5+) L?1. It indicated that damage to the photosynthetic apparatus had occurred. No changes in Fv/Fm, Fv/F0, and contents of photosynthetic pigments were observed in the plants grown in the presence of 0.2 mg(As5+) L?1 (in experiment 1) or after any of the treatments in experiment 2, indicating plant tolerance. Elevated nonphotochemical quenching was observed in experiment 2 after 20 d of exposure to As; it was as a part of protection mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus in these plants. The results obtained here indicate that the use of water hyacinth for As5+ removal from highly impacted environments is limited but that it is effective in remediating sites with a low contamination.  相似文献

In recent years, great attention has been given to the search for natural compounds or extracts with the purpose of medical use. Evolvulus alsinoides L. (Convolvulaceae) is a plant used in traditional medicine of East Asia in many indications and has known nootropic and anti-inflammatory activity. However, the bioactive constituents have been described poorly in the literature. Four substances isolated from the ethanol extract of E. alsinoides by means of polyamide and Silica-gel chromatography are reported here. Their molecular structures were determined using NMR analyses. There were identified as scopoletin, umbelliferone, scopolin and 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetrol. The quantity of these substances was determined using HPLC-UV and GC-FID detection. Antioxidant activity of the isolated substances was measured by DPPH assay using the SIA method. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of the prepared fractions are also described. The prepared fractions and isolated substances did not exhibit any significant activity in DPPH test.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the exclusivity and/or preference of macroinvertebrate taxa for river habitats. Indicator species analysis and random forests methods were applied to the data set of macroinvertebrate samples taken from 58 sampling points. Samples were classified according to habitat types defined by the position in a river channel and local hydraulic characteristics. 86 macroinvertebrate taxa were included in the analyses. High indicative values for habitats (importance value ≥50 and/or indicator value ≥40) were identified for 26 taxa. The results of both methods can be considered similar. Merged habitats of channel margin (margin of main channel and side arms) were mainly defined by “negative” indicator taxa (correct classification of given samples was caused by non-occurrence and low abundances of certain taxa in this habitat). In general, there was only a small group of taxa preferring these habitats. Taxa were not fully habitat specific because they mostly occurred in two or three habitat types. This could be the result of autecological plasticity of individual taxa and the connectivity among habitats. According to the experience from this case study, it can be concluded that both random forests and IndVal methods are suitable for the detection of indicative species, and random forests method has some additional advantages.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified (PTCL-US) is one of the entities from the infrequent family of nodal mature T-cell lymphomas. The clinical course is aggressive, and despite multiagent chemotherapy, the median survival is about 2 years. Published data are limited to retrospective, mostly single-center studies or reviews and usually include more lymphoma subtypes. AIM: To evaluate the current treatment modalities, clinical outcome and prognostic factors in unselected, new diagnosed patients with PTCL-US in the population of the central european region (Czech Republic). METHOD: Czech Lymphoma Study Group is a national scientific organization which provides an on-line database registry which collects a data about almost all new diagnosed lymphoma patients since year 2000. All diagnostic biopsies were reviewed by a reference pathologist. RESULTS: We analyzed 63 patients with new diagnosis of PTCL-US. The median age was 59 years (25-81), chemotherapy (CHT) was administered in 56 of the 63 patients: anthracyclin-based CHT in 51%, intensive CHT in 21% and non-anthracyclin regimen was applied in 13% of the patients. The overall response rate was 74.4%, (CR in 57.4%). After a median follow-up of 19.6 months, 41% of the patients were in CR, 3.4% in PR or stable disease and 55% of the patients died. The estimated survival probability in 3 years was 36%. Clinical stage (IV) and CR achievement were found to be independent survival predictors in a multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Although the current treatment modalities are mostly ineffective in PTCL-US, appropriate intensive treatment may lead to prolonged remission but not survival.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the parameters of two counterpropagating (colliding) plasma flows generated by discharges in crossed electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that the conversion efficiency of the energy deposited in the discharges into the energy of directed plasma flows is 0.3–0.6. For discharge current pulses with a duration of ∼10 μs, the energy flux density in the plasma flow reaches ∼10 J/cm2 and the total energy of the flow is on the order of 300 J. The density of deuterons in the flows is ∼1015 cm−3, and the flow velocity is ≤2×107 cm/s. The total number of particles carried by the flows is about 1019. The practical application of commercial malolactic starter cultures of Oenococcus oeni surviving direct inoculation in wine requires insight into the mechanisms involved in ethanol toxicity and tolerance in this organism. Exposure to ethanol resulted in an increase in the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane, enhancing passive proton influx and concomitant loss of intracellular material (absorbing at 260 nm). Cells grown in the presence of 8% (vol/vol) ethanol revealed adaptation to ethanol stress, since these cells showed higher retention of compounds absorbing at 260 nm. Moreover, for concentrations higher than 10% (vol/vol), lower rates of passive proton influx were observed in these ethanol-adapted cells, especially at pH 3.5. The effect of ethanol on O. oeni cells was studied as the ability to efficiently retain carboxyfluorescein (cF) as an indicator of membrane integrity and enzyme activity and the uptake of propidium iodide (PI) to assess membrane damage. Flow cytometric analysis of both ethanol-adapted and nonadapted cells with a mixture of the two fluorescent dyes, cF and PI, revealed three main subpopulations of cells: cF-stained intact cells; cF- and PI-stained permeable cells, and PI-stained damaged cells. The subpopulation of O. oeni cells that maintained their membrane integrity, i.e., cells stained only with cF, was three times larger in the population grown in the presence of ethanol, reflecting the protective effect of ethanol adaptation. This information is of major importance in studies of microbial fermentations in order to assign bulk activities measured by classical methods to the very active cells that are effectively responsible for the observations.  相似文献
