Short term regulation by lysine of ornithine decarboxylase activity in Dictyostelium discoideum

A transitory increase in ornithine decarboxylase activity has been observed soon after food removal from Dictyostelium discoideum amoeba. This increase can be prevented by supplementation of the differentiation buffer with the 11 amino acids known for their ability to retard the development of this slime mold. Lysine can replace the amino acid mixture with an apparent inhibition constant of 50 micromolar. This inhibition by lysine, which was only observed in vivo, took place within 5 min and was readily reversed upon lysine removal.     

Accumulation and secretion of exoglucanase activity in yeast secretory mutants

Representative conditional yeast secretory mutants, blocked in transport of secretory and plasma membrane proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum (sec 18), from the Golgi body (sec 7) and in transport of secretory vesicles (sec 1), accumulated exoglucanase, a constitutive yeast activity, when incubated at the restrictive temperature (37°C). Different proportions of the accumulated activity were released by mutant cells under permissive conditions. The presence or absence of cycloheximide during the secretion period made no differences in the results. More than 90% of the internal activity was bound to membrane in wild type cells. However, only the soluble pool underwent changes during the accumulation or secretion periods. The bulk of secretory invertase accumulated by sec 1 was also soluble. By contrast sec 7 and sec 18 accumulated membrane-bound as well as soluble invertase forms and both were secreted in similar proportions in each mutant. More than 90% of the accumulated invertase was secreted at the permissive temperature in sec 18 cells. That percentage was significantly lower for exoglucanase (<65%). Concomitantly, invertase accumulated by this mutant exited from the cells with a lower half time (t 1/2=150 min). Oxo fatty acid esters from Cryptocoryne spiralis rhizomes

Two new compounds, isolated from the rhizomes of Cryptocoryne spiralis, have been characterized as ethyl 14-oxotetracosanoate and 15-oxoeicosanyl 14-oxoheptadecanoate by spectral data and chemical studies. Hentriacontane and sitosterol have also been isolated and identified.     

Guaianolides from Saussurea affinis

Cynaropicrin, 11βH-11,13-dihydrodesacylcynaropicrin, aguerins A and B, isoamberboin and the new guaianolides saussureolide and 11βH-11,13-dihydrodesacylcynaropicrin 8-β-d-glucoside were isolated from Saussurea affinis.     

Glucose transport in Entamoeba histolytica

That the uptake of glucose by the parasitic amoeba Entamoeba histolytica occurs by an equilibrative transport system is supported by the following observations. 1. The rate of glucose uptake is several orders of magnitude greater than the uptake by pinocytosis. 2. The uptake of glucose exhibits saturation kinetics, with K(m)=1.6mm and V(max.) ranging from 2 to 5mumol/min per ml of cells at 37 degrees C. 3. The glucose analogues 2-deoxyglucose, 3-O-methylglucose and d-xylose are transported by the glucose system although with much less affinity. Competitive inhibition was observed between pairs of substrates, with K(i) values for any sugar closely coincident with the corresponding K(m). 4. d-Xylose, a sugar not metabolized by the cells, equilibrated with 80% of the amoebal cell water. 5. Cells equilibrated with xylose exhibited countertransport of this sugar against its concentration gradient when another substrate was added to the medium. 6. Blocking of glycolysis by iodoacetate or F(-) has no immediate effect on transport. The presence of a glucose-transport system in E. histolytica contrasts with the situation found in the non-parasitic amoeba, where pinocytosis seems to be the only mechanism of solute uptake.     

Morphological comparison ofSqualus blainvillei andS. megalops in the Eastern Atlantic,with notes on the genus

Morphological comparisons are made from the study of 64 specimens belonging to the following species:Squalus acanihias, S. blainvillei, S. megalops andS. acutirostris. The results suggest conspecificity betweenS. acutipinnis andS. megalops. The differences betweenS. blainvillei andS. megalops in the E-Atlantic are stressed. The Indo-Pacific species calledS. blainvillei by Chen et al. (1979) is regarded in this paper as probably an undescribed species. Some consideration on the status of several nominal species and the species grouping withinSqualus are also made.
