A number of studies have suggested the incompatibility of simultaneous increases in immune and reproductive functions. Other
research has indicated that immune responses may be modulated depending on the relative benefits of increased survival and
prospects for current and future reproduction. We tested the hypothesis that energy allocation to reproductive and other organ
systems is not affected by testosterone level and energy expenditure on immune functions. Adult male white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) with or without elevated testosterone levels and with or without immunochallenges were tested. Testosterone treatment was
associated with reduced humoral immune response indicating immunosuppressive effects, reduced masses of gastrointestinal organs,
reduced corticosterone level, increased kidney and seminal vesicle masses, and increased hematocrit. Immunochallenge was associated
with increased resting metabolic rate and testes and seminal vesicle masses. Reproductive organ masses were greatest in immunochallenged
mice with exogenous testosterone. Simultaneous increases in energy allocation to immune and reproductive structures may be

A unique set of data recorded on 60 randomly extracted single-seed-descent (F∞) lines of a highly heterotic cross between two varieties of Nicotiana rustica and their 870 reciprocally produced pairwise crosses, the second-cycle hybrids (SCH), are analysed to investigate the true
nature of genetical control in the cross and the results are compared with those in earlier publications. The analysis revealed
that epistasis, genotype-by-micro-environmental interaction, maternal effects and linkage are significant for several characters
and the additive and non-additive components of variation take large values for all of the traits. Epistasis is predominantly
duplicate and not complementary. Dominance is high but partial, all estimates of dominance ratio lying between 0.5 and 0.9.
Dominance is predominantly unidirectional for leaf length, leaf width and final height, while for the remaining traits, some
genes show ambidirectional dominance, although the incidence of unidirectional dominance is much higher throughout. The direction
of dominance is predominantly for the increased score, except for flowering time where alleles conferring earliness are up
to five times more frequently dominant. The present study has also confirmed that the F2 and SCHi distributions are very similar and that the former can be used to predict the transgression in the latter with confidence.
The reduced range of the SCH

families compared to the recombinant inbreds, further indicated that heterosis among many of the SCHi is due to gene dispersion and there is little evidence for the presence of over-dominance.

Genetic divergence and gene flow among closely related populations are
difficult to measure because mutation rates of most nuclear loci are so low
that new mutations have not had sufficient time to appear and become fixed.
Microsatellite loci are repeat arrays of simple sequences that have high
mutation rates and are abundant in the eukaryotic genome. Large population
samples can be screened for variation by using the polymerase chain
reaction and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to separate alleles. We
analyzed 10 microsatellite loci to quantify genetic differentiation and
hybridization in three species of North American wolflike canids. We
expected to find a pattern of genetic differentiation by distance to exist
among wolflike canid populations, because of the finite dispersal distances
of individuals. Moreover, we predicted that, because wolflike canids are
highly mobile, hybrid zones may be more extensive and show substantial
changes in allele frequency, relative to nonhybridizing populations. We
demonstrate that wolves and coyotes do not show a pattern of genetic
differentiation by distance. Genetic subdivision in coyotes, as measured by
theta and Gst, is not significantly different from zero, reflecting
persistent gene flow among newly established populations. However, gray
wolves show significant subdivision that may be either due to drift in past
Ice Age refugia populations or a result of other causes. Finally, in areas
where gray wolves and coyotes hybridize, allele frequencies of gray wolves
are affected, but those of coyotes are not. Past hybridization between the
two species in the south-central United States may account for the origin
of the red wolf.

The genetical control of F1 heterosis, observed in a cross of desirable Nicotiana tabacum varieties, was investigated by analysing the data of the basic generations, triple test cross-families and random samples of doubled haploids (DH) and single-seed descent (SSD) lines. Analyses of the first-degree statistics revealed a complex control underlying the genetic variation, including the presence of epistasis, linkage, maternal effects and their interactions, in addition to the additive and dominance effects of the genes segregating in the cross. These analyses identified gene dispersion, directional dominance, and duplicate epistasis, as the main causes of heterosis. The triple test-cross analysis also confirmed the presence of non-allelic interactions and indicated that the dominance ratio, although inflated by epistasis, is consistently partial for all the traits. The extent of transgression in the recombinant inbred lines finally established unequivocally that, as in numerous other crosses, gene dispersion and unidirectional, but partial, dominance are the true causes of heterosis in this cross too. 相似文献

When the population under investigation consists of highly inbred lines the full triple test-cross of Kearsey and Jinks (1968) supplemented by the selfed progenies of the population allows unambiguous and independent tests for epistasis and the adequacy of the pure-breeding testers, L1 and L2. This can also be achieved by supplementing the simplified triple test-cross of Jinks, Perkins and Breese (1969) with the selfed progenies of the L1i and L2i families. Background
The PCR technique and its variations have been increasingly used in the clinical laboratory and recent advances in this field generated new higher resolution techniques based on nucleic acid denaturation dynamics. The principle of these new molecular tools is based on the comparison of melting profiles, after denaturation of a DNA double strand. Until now, the secondary structure of single-stranded nucleic acids has not been exploited to develop identification systems based on PCR. To test the potential of single-strand RNA denaturation as a new alternative to detect specific nucleic acid variations, sequences from viruses of the Totiviridae family were compared using a new in silico melting curve approach. This family comprises double-stranded RNA virus, with a genome constituted by two ORFs, ORF1 and ORF2, which encodes the capsid/RNA binding proteins and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), respectively.Results
A phylogenetic tree based on RdRp amino acid sequences was constructed, and eight monophyletic groups were defined. Alignments of RdRp RNA sequences from each group were screened to identify RNA regions with conserved secondary structure. One region in the second half of ORF2 was identified and individually modeled using the RNAfold tool. Afterwards, each DNA or RNA sequence was denatured in silico using the softwares MELTSIM and RNAheat that generate melting curves considering the denaturation of a double stranded DNA and single stranded RNA, respectively. The same groups identified in the RdRp phylogenetic tree were retrieved by a clustering analysis of the melting curves data obtained from RNAheat. Moreover, the same approach was used to successfully discriminate different variants of Trichomonas vaginalis virus, which was not possible by the visual comparison of the double stranded melting curves generated by MELTSIM.Conclusion
In silico analysis indicate that ssRNA melting curves are more informative than dsDNA melting curves. Furthermore, conserved RNA structures may be determined from analysis of individuals that are phylogenetically related, and these regions may be used to support the reconstitution of their phylogenetic groups. New insights for the systematic and evolution of the wild sheep are provided by molecular phylogenies inferred from Maximum parsimony, Bayesian, Maximum likelihood, and Neighbor-Joining methods. The phylogeny of the wild sheep was based on cytochrome b sequences of 290 samples representative of most of the sub-species described in the genus Ovis. The result was confirmed by a combined tree based on cytochrome b and nuclear sequences for 79 Ovis samples representative of the robust clades established with mitochondrial data. Urial and mouflon, which are either considered as a single or two separate species, form two monophyletic groups (O. orientalis and O. vignei). Their hybrids appear in one or the other group, independently from their geographic origin. The European mouflon O. musimon is clearly in the O. orientalis clade. The others species, O. dalli, O. canadensis, O. nivicola, and O. ammon are monophyletic. The results support an Asiatic origin of the genus Ovis, followed by a migration to North America through North-Eastern Asia and the Bering Strait and a diversification of the genus in Eurasia less than 3 million years ago. Our results show that the evolution of the genus Ovis is a striking example of successive speciation events occurring along the migration routes propagating from the ancestral area. 相似文献
