Novel human DNA viruses and their putative associations with human diseases

In this review, we described human small DNA viruses discovered on the cusp of the 20th and 21st centuries as a result of cutting-edge technologies established in molecular biology. The problems of obtaining an evidence of the etiological role of new viruses in human diseases have been considered.     

Minor Alkaloids of the Fungus Penicillium roquefortiiThom 1906

New isomers of clavine alkaloids with distinctively low chromatographic mobilities were isolated from the collection and mutant strains of Penicillium roquefortiiThom 1906, in addition to alkaloids roquefortine, 3,12-dihydroroquefortine, isofumigaclavines A and B, festuclavine, and chanoclavine-I, which are characteristic of this species. It was demonstrated that the collection strain produces isomers of agroclavine and epoxyagroclavine, whereas the mutant strain synthesizes isomers of fumigaclavines A and B, festuclavine, and chanoclavine.     

The Penicillium commune Thom and Penicillium clavigerum Demelius fungi--fumigaclavines A and B producers

The type strains Penicillium clavigerum VKM F-447 and P. commune VKM F-3233 are found to produce fumigaclavines A and B. Of the seven other strains of these species, only two strains, P. commune VKM F-3088 and F-3491, possess the ability to synthesize these alkaloids. It is suggested that the five other strains under study either lost such an ability or require very specific conditions for the synthesis of these alkaloids.     

Oriented antibody immobilization to polystyrene macrocarriers for immunoassay modified with hydrazide derivatives of poly(meth)acrylic acid

Background  

Hydrophobic polystyrene is the most common material for solid phase immunoassay. Proteins are immobilized on polystyrene by passive adsorption, which often causes considerable denaturation. Biological macromolecules were found to better retain their functional activity when immobilized on hydrophilic materials. Polyacrylamide is a common material for solid-phase carriers of biological macromolecules, including immunoreagents used in affinity chromatography. New macroformats for immunoassay modified with activated polyacrylamide derivatives seem to be promising.     

Mycotoxins from the fungi Penicillium vulpinum (Cooke & Massee) Seifert & Samson

Mycotoxins produced by seven strains of Penicillium vulpinum (formerly Penicillium claviforme) isolated from different sources were studied. The strains were characterized by specific profiles of secondary metabolites and produced mycotoxins of different structural types. In addition to toxins already known for this fungal species (patulin, roquefortine, 3,12-dihydroroquefortine, oxalin, viridicatin, cyclopenin, and alpha-cyclopiazonic acid), the strains studied also produced indolyl-3-acetic acid, griseofulvin, meleagrin, and cyclopeptin.     

Study of chitin-glucan complexes from the soil micromycete Cephaliophora tropica D3

We studied chitin-glucan complexes from the soil micromycete Cephaliophora tropica D3. The yield and purity of chitin-glucan complexes depended on the medium used for micromycete culturing and the method of mycelium disintegration. Disintegration with liquid nitrogen allowed us to obtain preparations of chitin-glucan complexes with a low content of proteins and a high yield of chitosan (per dry fungal biomass unit weight).     

Software for analysis of bacterial genomes

GenomeExplorer is a program for comparative analysis of regulation in prokaryotic genomes. The program has options for signal search, comparison of gene samples, search for paralogs and orthologs, iterative construction of signal profiles. The program has a convenient graphic interface, allowing for navigation in the annotation window, in the genome map, and in the table of gene similarities. The use of the system clipboard allows one to export the results of analysis into Word and Excel, and to call external programs via the Internet.
