Effects of two different experimental situations of hypothyroidism on serum aldosterone concentration and plasma renin in rats

When hypothyroidism is induced surgically in early steps of development in the rat, an increase in serum aldosterone concentration (AC), in absence of changes in plasma renin activity (PRA), is observed. In contrast, in propylthiouracil (PTU) induced hypothyroidism, in adult animals, both AC and PRA decrease. Potassium iodide (KI) or triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) administration to thyroidectomized rats restores AC to normal levels, increasing PRA during the latter treatment. A close relationship between AC and plasma renin concentration (PRC) is observed in these experimental situations. The decrease in urinary aldosterone concentration (ACu), and the relation found between AC/ACu ratio and T3 concentration, suggest that metabolic clearance of aldosterone might be related to peripheric T3 levels in thyroidectomized animals, treated with KI or T3. These observations support the hypothesis, previously reported, which suggests different mechanisms involved in the control of aldosterone and renin release during the two different types of hypothyroidism.     

Possible effect of bromocriptine on the insulin receptor

The administration of 0.00011 mg/g weight/day of bromocriptine (CB154) for 7 days to Wistar rats, improved the peripheral glucose uptake without significant changes in plasma insulin level, during the intravenous glucose tolerance test (0.33 g/kg). The mode of the bromocriptine action on binding of 125I insulin to erythrocyte insulin receptors has been evaluated. The total number of sites was greater with bromocriptine (513.1 +/- 124.1 pM/1,CB154 815.6 +/- 107.9 pM/l) (p less than 0.01). The high affinity/low capacity compound of insulin receptor, in CB154 rats (51.8 +/- 16.8 pM/l) was higher than in normal rats (18.3 +/- 8.9 pM/l) (p less than 0.005). Additional studies indicated that CB154 had no effect on the rate of association and dissociation of 125I insulin from rats erythrocyte insulin receptors. The degradation of insulin or the erythrocyte receptor sites do not change, after the treatment with CB154.     

Presence of pH2-sensitive circulating interferon among Callithrix jacchus marmosets

Significant and relatively stable levels of serum-interferon were demonstrated in a Callithrix jacchus population. This circulating interferon was acid-sensitive in all cases, classifying it as immune or "gamma-type" interferon. Our results in these hematopoietic chimeras suggest that the presence of immune-type or at least pH 2-sensitive interferon could be related to the presence of two allogenic lymphocyte populations in each marmoset.     

What's new in lysozyme research?

The present review is focused on the main achievements realized in the lysozyme research field since the meeting held in 1972 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of this enzyme. Despite of extensive structural, physico-chemical, crystallographic, genetic, immunological and evolutionary studies devoted to lysozymes, their biological role is still not exactly known.

The synthesis of two series of glycopeptides, part of the N-terminal region of human glycophorin A, was accomplished starting from derivatives ofO--d-galactopyranosyl-(1–3)-O-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy--d-galactopyranosyl)-l-serine and-l-threonine.     

Effect of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide on the glucagon and insulin binding to isolated rat hepatocytes

Summary Number and affinity constant of low affinity binding sites of insulin and glucagon to isolated hepatocytes decreased when the cells were incubated with Escherichia coli 0111:B4 lipopolysaccharide. This effect agrees with a non-specific binding of lipopolysaccharide to hepatocytes, similar to the well-recognized non-specific binding of albumin. Also, binding of different lectins to their glycoprotein receptors did not affect the [¹⁴C]lipopolysaccharide interaction with the cell membrane surface. Endotoxin depresses gluconeogenesis from lactate when the precursor was incubated with the cells for short time intervals. The longer the preincubation interval with lipopolysaccharide, the higher the inhibition of gluconeogenesis in the absence and in the presence of glucagon.The effect of endotoxin was also studied on the glucagon-induced synthesis of cyclic AMP and the glucagon binding. Levels of cyclic AMP and hormone binding decreased with increasing both endotoxin concentrations and preincubation intervals at which cells were in contact with endotoxin.     

Effect of lipids on activity and conformation of lysolecithin:lysolecithin acyltransferase from rabbit lung

Summary Lysolecithin:lysolecithin acyltranferase is an enzyme which in several previous studies has shown a dual behavior catalyzing two types of reaction, transacylation or hydrolysis, with the same substrate. Both activities have shown to be dependent on several environmental conditions and among them, the presence of lipids.The addition of several classes of lipids activated in all the cases the enzyme, decreasing the hydrolysis/transacylation molar ratio. This effect was higher for PC/PE/Chol mixture than for other lipids assayed. Circular dichroism spectra of the enzyme did not show any change with the addition of lipids, concluding that the effect of lipids was not due to any structural change in the protein. Five new filamentous,glucose-fermenting Candida isolated from decayed wood in the evergreen rainy Valdivian forest of southern Chile

Five novel representatives of the yeast genus Candida isolated from advanced stages of wood degradation from fallen trunks of Eucryphia cordifolia Cav., Laurelia sempervirens Weim., Laurelia philippiana Weim., Nothofagus dombeyii (Mirb.) Blume, and Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Blume, in the evergreen rainy Valdivian forest of southern Chile, are described and illustrated. They clearly differ from all accepted Candida species to warrant their establishment as five new species of yeasts: Candida coipomensis sp. nov., Candida ralunensis sp. nov., Candida laureliae sp. nov., Candida osornensis sp. nov., and Candida llanquihuensis sp. nov.     

Four new species of Apiotrichum isolated from decayed wood in the evergreen rainy Valdivian forest of southern Chile

Four unusual Apiotrichum, isolated from decayed wood of Eucryphia cordifolia Cav., Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Blume, and Laurelia sempervirens Wein., one of which was also isolated from the intestinal tract of Scaptomyza multispinosa Malloch (Diptera), are described and illustrated. These species differ from all the accepted Apiotrichum species (1–3) to warrant their establishment as four new species: Apiotrichum eucryphiae, Apiotrichum osvaldii, Apiotrichum futronensis and Apiotrichum nothofagi.     

Two new species and one variety of nitrate-utilizing mycelial Candida isolated from decayed wood in the evergreen rainy Valdivian forest of southern Chile

Two unusual species of Candida and one variety of one of them, isolated from decayed wood (palo podrido) (12) in the ultimate stages of degradation, are described and illustrated. They differ sufficiently from all accepted Candida species to warrant their establishment as two new species and one variety: Candida railenensis, Candida bertae, and Candida bertae var. chiloensis.The DNA base composition of these yeasts was not calculated, since our laboratory is not properly equipped for that purpose.
