This study reports on the findings from a WHO sponsored cross-national investigation of life events and schizophrenia. Data are presented from a series of 386 acutely ill schizophrenic patients selected from nine field research centers located in developing and developed countries (Aarhus, Denmark; Agra, India; Cali, Colombia; Chandigarh, India; Honolulu, USA; Ibadan, Nigeria; Nagasaki, Japan; Prague, Czechoslovakia; Rochester, USA). On a methodological level, the study demonstrates that life event methodologies originating in the developed countries can be adapted for international studies and may be used to collect reasonably reliable and comparable cross-cultural data on psychosocial factors affecting the course of schizophrenic disorders. Substantive findings replicate the results of prior studies which conclude that socioenvironmental stressors may precipitate schizophrenic attacks and such events tend to cluster in the two to three week period immediately preceding illness onset.The paper was prepared by these authors on behalf of the collaborating investigators listed on page 196.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, blackfly larvae collected from a lake outlet, a woodland and a meadow stream were tested for size selection of latex beads of < Ito > 100 μm diameters. 3 suspensions of varying proportions for each size category were supplied to these blackfly larvae in common experiments. Comparisons between the size frequency distributions of particles supplied and the particle compositions in the larval guts showed intra- and interspecific differences and were quantified by calculating Jacobs' electivity index. In all species selection of larger particles increased with the larger larval instars. Although there was a positive selectivity of small particles in some cases, the ingested proportion of large particles increases volumes and biomasses of gut content and may be more important for larval growth than small particles.  相似文献

The population dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a fertilized enclosure were studied from April 1977 to June 1978. During the first spring period, the rotifers Keratella cochlearis, Kellicottia longispina, and Polyarthra vulgaris were scarce. During the following spring, all three species were abundant. An attempt is made to explain these differences. Food resource competition from cladocerans, and the low food quality and possible inhibitory effects of Coccomyxa sp. were found to be the most likely factors limiting the growth of these rotifers during the first spring period.  相似文献

The genes for utilization of cellobiose are normally cryptic in both laboratory strains and natural isolates of Escherichia coli. A survey of natural isolates of E. coli reveals that functional genes for cellobiose utilization, while rare, are present. The fraction of E. coli that utilized cellobiose ranged from less than 0.01% in human fecal samples to 7% in fecal samples obtained from horses. Samples obtained from sheep, cows, dogs, and pigs contained 0.1 to 0.5% cellobiose-positive E. coli. Neither the previously identified cel genes nor the bgl genes from E. coli K-12 were expressed during growth on cellobiose by any of the 14 naturally occurring Cel+ isolates that were tested. All of the naturally occurring Cel+ isolates possessed a cel operon, but all were deleted for the major portion of the bgl operon. The functional cel+ genes from these natural isolates differed from the mutationally activated cel+ genes obtained in earlier studies in that (i) the mutationally activated cel+ genes were temperature sensitive, while the functional genes were not, and (ii) transport of cellobiose was inducible in the strains carrying functional cel+ genes, while it was expressed constitutively in strains carrying mutationally activated genes.  相似文献

Isosphaera pallida is an unusual gliding, budding eubacterium recently isolated from North American hot springs. Electron micrographs of ultrathin sections revealed a cell wall atypical of eubacteria: two electrondense layers separated by an electron-transparent layer, with no evident peptidoglycan layer. Growth was not inhibited by penicillin. Cell walls were isolated from sheared cells by velocity sedimentation. The rigid-layer fraction, prepared from cell walls by treatment with boiling 10% sodium dodecyl sulfate, was hydrolyzed and chemically analyzed for muramic acid. This essential component of peptidoglycan was absent. Amino acid analysis demonstrated a proteinaceous wall structure. Pitlike surface structures seen in negatively stained whole cells and thin sections were correlated with periodically spaced perforations of the rigid sacculus. An analysis of the lipid composition of I. pallida revealed typical ester-linked lipids with unbranched fatty acids, in contrast to the isoprenyl ether-linked lipids of archaebacteria, which also have proteinaceous cell walls. Capnoids, unusual sulfonolipids which are present in gliding bacteria of the Cytophaga-Flexibacter group, were absent.  相似文献

Attachment of bacteria to the host tissue is regarded as a crucial step in the development of many types of infections. Recent studies by us and others have shown that matrix proteins which serve as adhesion proteins for eucaryotic cells may also be recognized by some bacteria. In the present communication, we report that several strains of viridans streptococci are able to bind to laminin. Most strains isolated from blood and heart valves of patients with endocarditis expressed laminin receptors, whereas only a few of the strains isolated from the oral cavity recognized this protein. This observation indicates that laminin binding might be an important factor in the pathogenesis of viridans endocarditis. Laminin binding to two strains (Streptococcus mitis UAB594 and UAB597) isolated from patients with endocarditis was characterized further. The bacterial cells expressed a limited number of laminin receptors (4 X 10(2) to 1 X 10(3) per cell) which bound the protein in a high-affinity interaction (Kd, 40 to 80 nM). This receptor of S. mitis UAB594 was heat labile and could be solubilized from bacteria by brief digestion with trypsin. Solubilized receptors which competed with cell-bound receptors for 125I-laminin could be adsorbed on laminin-Sepharose but not on Sepharose substituted with fibrinogen or fibronectin. Comparison of laminin receptors from S. mitis with those previously described for Streptococcus pyogenes suggest that different sites in the laminin molecule are recognized by the two bacteria and hence that the corresponding receptor molecules are not identical.  相似文献

Summary Voltage-dependent K channels could be identified in on-cell and excised patch-clamp records on membranes of isolated plant cell vacuoles. The current through a membrane patch is dominated by a channel population with a conductance of about 121 pS in symmetrical 250mm KCl solution. The single channel adopts at least two conducting levels the 121-pS state being most frequently observed. The channel shows outward rectification, representing a cation flux into the vacuoles. The rectification appears to be caused by a vanishing open probability and a short channel lifetime at hyperpolarizing voltages. A selectivity ratio of potassium over sodium of about 6 was derived as an estimate. Occasionally, an additional population of K channels with a single-channel conductance of approximately 18 pS is observed. This channel type exhibits outward rectification as well.  相似文献

To elucidate the position of the peptide bond in glutamyl-taurine this dipeptide was extracted from calf brain synaptic vesicles and subjected to paper electrophoresis. Summary The morphology of the tibio-tarsal antenna cleaner (strigilis) of 30 species of Formicidae, 14 species of Mutillidae and 9 species of Tiphiidae was investigated and is described comparatively. In Formicidae, there is a common type of strigilis. The spur has a posterior-dorsal comb and its anterior side is covered with squamae, which usually form a brush. Posteriorly, the basitarsal notch bears a comb and anteriorly specialized paddle-shaped hairs. These characters may be apomorphic for Formicidae. In several Ponerinae and in Myrmecia there is also a velum on the spur. In two species of ants which are strongly parasitic (Teleutomyrmex schneideri and Anergates atratulus ) there are reduced antenna cleaners. Mutillidae (except Myrmosa) have another common type of strigilis: the spur bears a velum with a smooth rim and a clear apex with two rows of teeth. The notch in the basitarsus is usually deeper than that of ants; there is a comb, but no paddle-shaped hairs. The strigilis of Myrmosa females has no velum but there are two prominent rows of teeth on the spur. In the male, the velum is reduced to a slender strip. In Tiphiidae the antenna cleaners show considerable diversity. In Methocha the spur bears a comb but no velum; the spur of Tiphia has a velum with a serrated rim; the spur of Myzinum is equipped with a velum with a smooth rim; in Thynnus the surface of the velum is wrinkled or undulating. An apex (without teeth) is present in all investigated Tiphiidae. The notch of the basitarsus bears a comb except in female Myzinum, where the teeth seem to have fused, thus forming a rim. It is suggested that a velum with a serrated or toothed edge and an apex with two rows of teeth are plesiomorphic for aculeate Hymenoptera. The antenna cleaners in Mutillidae are remarkably similar to those in some bees. This fact is interpreted as partly due to convergence and as partly symplesiomorphic. In several species of ants, there is a specialized cuticular area (bande poreuse) anterior to the comb of the notch, which is characterized by fissures or holes. Summary An analysis was made of the effects of different sampling and extraction techniques on the amounts and pattern of monoterpenoids isolated from needles of Norway spruce. The following isolation and analysis procedure was finally adopted: liquid nitrogen-cooled needles were pulverized by a microdismembrator, extracted with pentane overnight at 2°–3°C and concentrated to a volume not less than 3 ml/g fresh weight on a Vigreux column. The crude extract was injected splitless (with solvent split) onto a cold programmed temperature vaporized (PTV) precolumn of a gas chromatograph and the vaporizable compounds heated to a capillary column. This method was tested for production of artefacts and quantitative extraction and applied to needles of eleven 80-year-old spruce trees.  相似文献
