Bird vocalizations are likely shaped both by natural and sexual selection. Here we test the sensory-drive hypothesis, which states that communication signals diverge as a direct adaptation to the signaling environment and can evolve to minimize degradation and maximize transmission. We examined the effects of elevation and other habitat variables on variation in vocalizations of Chiroxiphia boliviana (Aves, Pipridae) along an elevational gradient (1300–2500 m) in cloud and humid montane forests in the Andes of Bolivia. We also conducted sound transmission experiments to determine if reverberation and attenuation changed along the gradient. Reverberation increased at higher elevations, and attenuation decreased at higher elevations and increased for higher frequencies. We recorded vocalizations from ~?50 individuals throughout the elevational gradient and examined variation in duration and bandwidth of short calls (used as contact calls between males), 2 display calls (advertisement for females) and 2 types of male–male duets (including interval times between males). Duration of short calls, display 1 and duet 1 increased with elevation. Bandwidth of short calls increased at mid-elevation categories and decreased at high elevations, whereas bandwidth of display 1 and duet 1 decreased with elevation. We also directly related the transmission properties to vocalizations and found that bandwidth of short calls decreased with reverberation and attenuation, bandwidth of display 2 decreased with reverberation, and duration of duet 1 both increased and decreased with attenuation (at 3 and 4 kHz, respectively). This study suggests that vocalizations by C. boliviana may be adapted to the habitat transmission properties along the elevational gradient; and perhaps that increasing song length and concentrating energy within a narrow bandwidth may lead to an increase in amplitude and improvement in transmission. Overall, our results support the sensory-drive hypothesis and suggest that this form of selection is likely common along tropical elevational gradients.  相似文献

The acid mine drainage that originates in the abandoned gold mine in San Luis, Argentina, is released into La Carolina stream. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of this mine drainage on the physicochemical parameters of the area studied and on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic community structure. In addition, specific relationships between microbial taxonomic groups and physicochemical parameters were established. The drainage that flows into La Carolina stream acidifies the stream and increases its sulfate, Zn, Cd and Te concentrations. Microbial analysis showed that prokaryotic community structure is mainly affected by pH values. Actinobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria were abundant in samples characterized by low pH values, while Nitrospirae, Chloroflexi, Deltaproteobacteria, Thaumarchaeota and Euryarchaeota were associated with high concentrations of heavy metals. Otherwise, Alphaproteobacteria was present in samples taken in sunlit areas. Regarding eukaryotic community structure, the sunlight had the greatest impact. Inside the mine, in the absence of light, fungi and protists members were the most abundant microorganisms, while those samples taken in the presence of light displayed algae (green algae and diatoms) as the most abundant ones. After receiving the mine drainage, the stream showed a decrease in the diatom abundance and green algae predominated.

The ability to assess green biomass is of particular interest in a number of wheat breeding environments. However, the measurement of this and similar traits is either tedious and time-consuming or requires the use of expensive, sophisticated equipment, such as field-based spectroradiometers to measure vegetation indices (VIs). Here, conventional digital cameras are proposed as affordable and easy-to-use tools for gathering field data in wheat breeding programmes. Using appropriate software, a large set of images can be automatically processed to calculate a number of VIs, based on the performance of simple colour operations on each picture. The purpose of this study was to identify a set of picture-derived vegetation indices (picVIs) and to evaluate their performance in durum wheat trials growing under rainfed and supplementary irrigation conditions. Here, zenithal pictures of each plot were obtained roughly 2 weeks after anthesis, and the picVIs that were calculated were compared with the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), an index derived from spectroradiometrical measurements, and with the grain yield (GY) from the same plots. The picVIs that performed best were the Hue, CIE-Lab a* and CIE-Luv u* components of the average colour of each picture, the relative green area (GA) and the 'greener area', similar to GA but excluding the more yellowish-green pixels. Our results showed a high correlation between all these picVIs and the NDVI. Moreover, in rainfed conditions, each picVI provided an estimation of GY similar to or slightly better than that provided by the NDVI. However, in irrigated conditions during anthesis, neither these picVIs nor the NDVI provided a good estimation of GY, apparently because of the saturation of the VI response in conditions of complete soil cover and high plant density.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate possible interactions of tetrodotoxin (TTX) with lipid molecules isolated from nerve fiber plasma membranes of the squid Dosidicus gigas. TTX has a highly selective ability to block the channel normally used by Na+ to cross the axolemma during nervous impulse conduction. In order to investigate the interaction each lipid sample was spread on 5 x 10-7 M TTX and TTX-free 0.15 M NaCl solutions adjusted to pH 7.4 with 7 x 10-3 M phosphate buffer. The surface pressure-area diagrams of the lipid monolayers revealed that TTX interacts only with cholesterol. The expansion of the cholesterol monolayers at 5 x 10-7 M TTX was 2 A2/molecule at zero pressure for the experiments at 20°C and 2.5 A2/molecule for those at 25°C. Similar results were obtained in KCl subphases. The apparent dissociation constant of the cholesterol-TTX complex calculated from dose-response experiments is 2.6 x 10-7 M. Experiments at pH 10.1 revealed that the zwitter ionic form of TTX is less active. Experiments with cholesterol derivatives (cholesteryl acetate, cholesterol methyl ether, cholestanol, and cholestanyl acetate) indicate that for the interaction with TTX a partial negatively charged group at C-3 and a double bond between C-5 and C-6 on the steroid nucleus are required. Tetrodonic acid, a biologically inactive derivative of TTX, does not interact with cholesterol. The results lead us to propose that cholesterol is part of the Na+ channel.  相似文献

The effects on the Schwann cell electrical potential of external ionic concentrations and of K-strophanthoside were investigated. Increasing (K)o depolarized the cell. The potential is related to the logarithm of (K)o in a quasi-linear fashion. The linear portion of the curve has a slope of 45 mv/ten-fold change in (K)o. Diminutions of (Na)o and (Cl)o produced only small variations in the potential. Calcium and magnesium can be replaced by 44 mM calcium without altering the potential. Increase of (Ca)o to 88 mM produced about 10 mv hyperpolarization. The cell was hyperpolarized by 11 mv and 4 mv within 1 min after applying K-strophanthoside at concentrations of 10-3 and 10-5 M, respectively. No variations of cellular potassium, sodium, or chloride were observed 3 min after applying the glycoside. The hyperpolarization caused by 10-3 M K-strophanthoside was not observed when (K)o was diminished to 1 or 0.1 mM or was increased to 30 mM. At a (K)o of 30 mM, 10-2 M strophanthoside was required to produce the hyperpolarizing effect. In high calcium, the cell was further hyperpolarized by the glycoside. The initial hyperpolarization caused by the glycoside was followed by a gradual depolarization and a decrease of the cellular potassium concentration. The results indicate that the Schwann cell potential of about -40 mv is due to ionic diffusion, mainly of potassium, and to a cardiac glycoside-sensitive ion transport process.  相似文献

The penetration of 14C-labeled erythritol, mannitol, and sucrose through the axolemma was determined in medium sized paired axons, one at rest and the other stimulated 25 times per sec. The resting permeabilities, in 10-7 cm/sec, are erythritol, 2.9 ± 0.3 (mean ± SEM); mannitol, 2.3 ± 0.4; and sucrose 0.9 ± 0.1. In the stimulated axons they are: erythritol, 5.2 ± 0.3; mannitol, 4.0 ± 0.5; and sucrose, 1.8 ± 0.3. Thus, the calculated permeabilities during activity (1 msec per impulse), in the same units, are: 100, 75, and 38, respectively. These changes in permeability are reversible. The effects of external potassium and sodium concentrations on erythritol penetration were also studied. At rest, erythritol penetration is independent of potassium and sodium concentrations. In the stimulated axons, erythritol penetration decreases when the extracellular sodium is diminished. Sodium influx (not the efflux) decreases during rest and activity when the extracellular sodium is diminished. The diminution during activity of erythritol and sodium entries in low sodium solutions may be related to a decrease of a drag effect of sodium ions on the nonelectrolyte molecules or to independent effects of the sodium concentration on sodium influx and the nonelectrolyte pathways. The axolemma discriminates among erythritol, mannitol, sucrose, and the different ionic species during rest and activity.  相似文献

Lianas are a quintessential feature of tropical forests and are often perceived as being poorly studied. However, liana removal studies may be one of the most common experimental manipulations in tropical forest ecology. In this review, we synthesize data from 64 tropical liana removal experiments conducted over the past 90 yr. We explore the direction and magnitude of the effects of lianas on tree establishment, growth, survival, reproduction, biomass accretion, and plant and animal diversity in ecological and forestry studies. We discuss the geographical biases of liana removal studies and compare the various methods used to manipulate lianas. Overall, we found that lianas have a clear negative effect on trees, and trees benefitted from removing lianas in nearly every study across all forest types. Liana cutting significantly increased light and water availability, and trees responded with vastly greater reproduction, growth, survival, and biomass accumulation compared to controls where lianas were present. Removing lianas during logging significantly reduced damage of future merchantable trees and improved timber production. Our review demonstrates that lianas have an unequivocally detrimental effect on every metric of tree performance measured, regardless of forest type, forest age, or geographic location. However, lianas also appear to have a positive contribution to overall forest plant diversity and to different animal groups. Therefore, managing lianas reduces logging damage and improves timber production; however, the removal lianas may also have a negative effect on the faunal community, which could ultimately harm the plant community.  相似文献

Parental care in long‐lived bird species involves a trade‐off between the benefits of increasing the effort expended on current offspring and the costs that this represents for future reproductive output. Under regimes of high environmental variability, long‐lived seabirds can adjust their breeding effort to buffer the negative effects of this variability on their offspring. However, the potential impacts of variation in breeding effort on offspring physiology in the short term and on longer‐term survival are poorly understood. In this study, we manipulated brood age through a cross‐fostering experiment to assess whether increasing or decreasing parental reproductive expenditure led to costs in Blue‐footed Booby Sula nebouxii chicks. Specifically, we tested the consequences of altered parental reproductive expenditure on the offspring's physiological condition (plasma metabolites, heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H/L) and body condition index (BCI)) and survival. Offspring from broods in which parental investment was experimentally increased showed a lower BCI and lower alkaline phosphatase levels and higher H/L ratios than controls. Conversely, offspring showed the opposite pattern when reproductive expenditure was experimentally decreased. We observed no effects of manipulation of parental investment on triglyceride levels or on survival rates. Although our findings suggest that Blue‐footed Booby parents have the ability to adjust their breeding effort according to the demands of their offspring, parental effort could influence the effect of hatching order by suppressing the aggressive tendency of the senior chick.  相似文献
