Objectives
The study had three objectives: (a) To determine how staff perceives the frequency of different sexual expressions in long-term care facilities for older people; (2) to quantify policies aimed at guaranteeing residents’ sexual rights in such institutions, and (3) to determine factors influencing the presence of these kind of policies.Methods
A total of 160 Directors of Nursing and 623 technical staff from Spanish long term care residential facilities completed a self-administered questionnaire including ítems to assess the experience and estimated frequency of different sexual expressions, an inventory of policies regarding sexual expression, and the Spanish version of the Person-Centred Care Assessment Tool.Results
Certain sexual behaviours, such as kisses and hugs, or masturbation, are very frequent in nursing homes. Many participants have reported to staff members on having witnessed inappropriate sexual behaviours, such as exhibitionism (39%) or unwanted touching (27%). Policies in relation to guaranteeing residents’ sexual rights were the most frequently mentioned. In contrast, there were fewer participants who mentioned policies regarding training or availability of helpful materials and resources. Factors such as occupational level (Directors of Nursing vs.technical staff), personal education, the centre commitment to person-centred care, and estimated frequency of sexual behaviour were associated with a higher presence of sexual expression policies.Conclusion
Although sexual behaviours among residents are quite frequent, there is still room for improvement in policies that support residents’ expression of sexuality. Person-centred care models might help to guarantee sexual rights of older people living in long-term care facilities. 相似文献24.

Recently, cardiotonic steroids (CTS) have been shown to lead to the activation of Na,K-ATPase at low concentrations in brain, promoting neuroprotection against ischemia. We report here the results of the use of digoxin and its semisynthetic derivatives BD-14, BD-15, and BD-16 against partial chemical ischemic induction followed by reperfusion in murine neuroblastoma cells neuro-2a (N2a). For chemical ischemic induction, sodium azide (5 mM) was used for 5 hours, and then reperfusion was induced for 24 hours. Na,K-ATPase activity and protein levels were analyzed in membrane preparation of N2a cells pretreated with the compounds (150 nM), in the controls and in induced chemical ischemia. In the Na,K-ATPase activity and protein levels assays, the steroids digoxin and BD-15 demonstrated a capacity to modulate the activity of the enzyme directly, increasing its levels of expression and activity. Oxidative parameters, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substance), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH) levels, hydrogen peroxide content, and the amount of free radicals (reactive oxygen species) during induced chemical ischemia were also evaluated. Regarding the redox state, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide content, and GPx activity, we have observed an increase in the chemical ischemic group, and a reduction in the groups treated with CTS. SOD activity increased in all treated groups when compared to control and GSH levels decreased when treated with sodium azide and did not change with CTS treatments. Regarding the lipid profile, we saw a decrease in the content of phospholipids and cholesterol in the chemical ischemic group, and an increase in the groups treated with CTS. In conclusion, the compounds used in this study demonstrate promising results, since they appear to promote neuroprotection in cells exposed to chemical ischemia. 相似文献

We report the detection and characterization of the first vancomycin-resistant VanB-type Enterococcus faecium to be isolated in a Spanish hospital. Sequence analysis of the vanB gene showed that this isolate belonged to subtype vanB2. A novel method to organize protein structural information based solely on sequence is presented. The method clusters proteins into families that correlate with the three-dimensional protein structure and the conformation of the bound ligands. This procedure was applied to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide [NAD(P)]-utilizing enzymes to identify a total of 94 sequence families, 53 of which are structurally characterized. Each of the structurally characterized proteins within a sequence family correlates to a single protein fold and to a common bound conformation of NAD(P). A wide range of structural folds is identified that recognize NAD(P), including Rossmann folds and beta/alpha barrels. The defined sequence families can be used to identify the type and prevalence of NAD(P)-utilizing enzymes in the proteomes of sequenced organisms. The proteome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was mined to generate a proteome-wide profile of NAD(P)-utilizing enzymes coded by this organism. This enzyme family comprises approximately 6% of the open reading frames, with the largest subgroup being the Rossmann fold, short-chain dehydrogenases. The preponderance of short-chain dehydrogenases correlates strongly with the phenotype of M. tuberculosis, which is characterized as having one of the most complex prokaryotic cell walls. 相似文献

In this work we analyzed variations in the expression of MBPs and P0 in ligated sciatic nerves of young and adult rats at 3, 7, and 14 days postligation (PL), by immunohistochemistry and SDS-PAGE of isolated myelin. A protein redistribution was seen in the distal stump of ligated nerves with the appearance of immunoreactive clusters. Using the KS400 image analyzer, immunostained area values were obtained from the different nerves dissected. In adult rats, there was an increase of the immunostained area for MBP from 3 to 7 days PL, coincident with a reorganization of the marker in clusters, followed by a marked decrease at 14 days. P0 immunolabeling gave similar results without, however, a decrease of the immunostained area at the longer survival time tested. Young animals showed an acceleration in the process of protein redistribution and digestion within ligated nerves, which followed a similar pattern as that of adult animals. Analysis by electrophoresis showed a marked decrease in P0 and MBP at 7 days PL in young rats and 14 days PL in adult rats. The functional significance of protein clustering within myelin in injured nerves deserves further analysis. 相似文献

The single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB) of phage GA-1 displays higher efficiency than the SSBs of the related phages phi 29 and Nf. In this work, the self-interaction ability of GA-1 SSB has been analyzed by visualization of the purified protein by electron microscopy, glycerol gradient sedimentation, and in vivo cross-linking of bacterial cultures infected with phage GA-1. GA-1 SSB contains an insert at its N-terminal region that is not present in the SSBs of phi 29 and Nf. Three deletion mutant proteins have been characterized, Delta N19, Delta N26, and Delta N33, which lack the 19, 26 or 33 amino acids, respectively, that follow the initial methionine of GA-1 SSB. Mutant protein Delta N19 retains the structural and functional behavior of GA-1 SSB, whereas mutant proteins Delta N26 and Delta N33 no longer stimulate viral DNA replication or display helix-destabilizing activity. Analysis of the mutant proteins by ultracentrifugation in glycerol gradients and electron microscopy indicates that deletion of 26 or 33 but not of 19 amino acids of the N-terminal region of GA-1 SSB results in the loss of the oligomerization ability of this protein. Our data support the importance of the N-terminal region of GA-1 SSB for the differential self-interaction ability and functional behavior of this protein. 相似文献

This study investigated genetic polymorphism on a local scale in Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici populations during natural epidemics, in four fields located in northern France and sampled in 1998 or 1999. Two hundred and forty-seven isolates were analyzed for their amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) pattern through four primer combinations, and 194 of them were also tested for their virulence factors. Only one or two pathotypes were found in each field, and all isolates had virulence v17, matching the recently introduced Yr17 resistance gene. Polymorphism on a field scale was low. Although 67 loci were polymorphic, 77% of the isolates had the same AFLP pattern, all other patterns being rare or unique. Analyses of the genetic distance between AFLP patterns based on the Jaccard index allowed us to define 12 groups, but a bootstrap analysis showed that all isolates could be assigned to a single clonal lineage. This leads us to conclude that P. striiformis f. sp. tritici populations are clonal on a field scale in northern France. 相似文献
