Inorganic nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphate (o-P) concentrations were measured in the water of a marsh and in its interstitial water at two sites, and in the river water of a floodplain marsh of the Lower Paraná River. These values were compared with the N and P concentration in sediments and macrophyte biomass in order to assess nutrient availability, fate and storage capacity. High variability was found in the interstitital water using a 1 cm resolution device. Nitrate was never detected in the pore water. Depth averaged NH4 + concentrations in the upper 30 cm layer often ranged from N = 1.5 to 1.8 mg l-1, but showed a pronounced minimum (0.5–0.7 mg l-1), close to (March 95), or relatively soon after (May 94) the end of the macrophyte growing season. Soluble phosphate showed a large variation between P = 0.1–1.1 mg l-1 without any discernible seasonal pattern. NH4 + depletion in the pore water concentration and low N/P ratios (3.7 by weight) within the macrophyte biomass at the end of the growing period suggest that available N limits plant growth. NH4 + and o-P concentrations were 35 and 7 times higher, respectively, in the pore water than in the overlying marsh, suggesting a permanent flux of nutrients from the sediments. o-P accumulate in the marsh leading to higher concentrations than in the incoming river. NH4 + did not accumulate in the marsh, and no significant differences were observed between the river and the marsh water, while the NO3 - contributed by the river water was depleted within the marsh, caused probably by coupled nitrification-denitrification at the sediment–water interface. Although an order of magnitude smaller, the pore water pool can supply enough nutrients to build up the macrophyte biomass pool, but only if a fast turnover is attained. The Paraná floodplain marsh retains a large amount of nutrients being stored mainly in the sediment compartment.  相似文献

To address this, in 2012, we designed linked household and frontline worker surveys for Gombe State, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Uttar Pradesh, India. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3K) phosphorylate the 3-position of the inositol ring of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate to produce phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate. It is not clear whether PI3K can phosphorylate the inositol group in other biomolecules. We sought to determine whether PI3K was able to use glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) as a substrate. This phospholipid may exist either in free form (GPIfree) or forming a lipid anchor (GPIanchor) for the attachment of extracellular proteins to the plasma membrane. We demonstrate the specific PI3K-mediated phosphorylation of the inositol 3-hydroxyl group within both types of GPI by incubating this phospholipid with immunoprecipitated PI3K. The phosphorylated product behaves in HPLC as a derivative of a PI3K lipid product. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that PI3K uses lipid substrates other than phosphoinositides. Further, we show that this has potential functional consequences. When GPIfree is phosphorylated, it becomes a poorer substrate for GPI-specific phospholipase D, but a better substrate for phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C. These phosphorylation events may constitute the basis of a previously undescribed signal transduction mechanism.  相似文献

In this study, we compare the relative growth rate (RGR) and biomass allocation of 10 woody species (5 deciduous and 5 evergreen) from the Mediterranean region using phylogenetic independent contrasts (PICs) to test if these two functional groups differ in these traits. In general, the results were similar when using PICs or without taking into account phylogenetic relations. Deciduous species had a higher RGR than evergreen species, due to the higher net assimilation rate (NAR). Deciduous species had a higher specific leaf area (SLA) but a lower leaf mass ratio (LMR), resulting in a similar LAR for deciduous and evergreen species (LAR = SLA x LMR). In some cases, the use of PICs revealed patterns that would not have appeared if phylogeny had been overlooked. For example, there was no significant correlation between RGR and final dry mass (after 4 months of growth) but PICs revealed that there was a positive relation between these two variables in all deciduous-evergreen pairs. In general, RGR decreased with time and this temporal variation was due primarily to NAR variations (r = 0.79, p < 0.01), and also to variations in LAR (r = 0.69, p < 0.05). Considering the phylogeny, the only variable constantly different for all deciduous-evergreen pairs was SLA. This result, and the fact that SLA was the best correlated variable with RGR (r = 0.81, p < 0.01), reinforce the value of SLA as a variable closely associated to growth and to the functional groups (deciduous vs. evergreen).  相似文献

The balance between sexual and asexual propagation in the establishment of natural stands of Populus nigra was assessed from the genotypes of trees sampled in different natural stands. One site was completely sampled and genotyping proceeded using STS and RAPD markers. Among 118 trees, only four were vegetative copies of other trees of the site. Isozymes were used in four stands, and a method to detect the presence of vegetative copies in a sample is proposed for these markers. No vegetative copies were found in two cases, and a low number of copies was detected in the other two. Observations are reported for seedlings as well as for different modes of vegetative propagation in natural stands. We conclude that sexual and asexual propagation play complementary roles in the dynamics of this species, and that in most cases the adults originate from seedlings.  相似文献

A systematic literature review was conducted to describe the epidemiology of dengue disease in Colombia. Searches of published literature in epidemiological studies of dengue disease encompassing the terms “dengue”, “epidemiology,” and “Colombia” were conducted. Studies in English or Spanish published between 1 January 2000 and 23 February 2012 were included. The searches identified 225 relevant citations, 30 of which fulfilled the inclusion criteria defined in the review protocol. The epidemiology of dengue disease in Colombia was characterized by a stable “baseline” annual number of dengue fever cases, with major outbreaks in 2001–2003 and 2010. The geographical spread of dengue disease cases showed a steady increase, with most of the country affected by the 2010 outbreak. The majority of dengue disease recorded during the review period was among those <15 years of age. Gaps identified in epidemiological knowledge regarding dengue disease in Colombia may provide several avenues for future research, namely studies of asymptomatic dengue virus infection, primary versus secondary infections, and under-reporting of the disease. Improved understanding of the factors that determine disease expression and enable improvement in disease control and management is also important.  相似文献
