1. A key aspect of the ecology and evolution of adaptive prey responses to predator risk is the timing by which the former develop a defensive trait in response to inducing signals released by the latter. This property, called reactivity, has been shown to affect population stability and persistence. 2. Theoretically, the minimal predator density required by prey to exhibit induced defences is expected to increase with the effectiveness of the defence and decrease with its cost. Likewise, the time required for the prey population to exhibit an induced defence is expected to increase together with cost. 3. The freshwater rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. havanaensis and their predator Asplanchna brightwelli were used to test the hypothesis that prey species exhibiting defences that offer a larger fitness benefit and lower fitness cost are more reactive to predator signals, in terms of requiring shorter exposure time and lower signal concentration to trigger a morphological defence reaction. 4. Our results showed that both prey species exhibited costly and effective defences after induction by predator infochemicals. Faster reactions were observed at higher levels of predator cues. Nevertheless, the observed relationship between reactivity and benefit/cost of defences did not agree with our expectations. 5. To our knowledge, this is the first study in which the timing of induction of morphological defences is experimentally assessed over a gradient of risk signals. We propose new research directions to disentangle the mechanisms and project the consequences of prey decisions at the morphological level.  相似文献

Chloroplast transglutaminase (chlTGase) activity is considered to play a significant role in response to a light stimulus and photo‐adaptation of plants, but its precise function in the chloroplast is unclear. The characterisation, at the proteomic level, of the chlTGase interaction with thylakoid proteins and demonstration of its association with photosystem II (PSII) protein complexes was accomplished with experiments using maize thylakoid protein extracts. By means of a specific antibody designed against the C‐terminal sequence of the maize TGase gene product, different chlTGase forms were immunodetected in thylakoid membrane extracts from three different stages of maize chloroplast differentiation. These bands co‐localised with those of lhcb 1, 2 and 3 antenna proteins. The most significant, a 58 kDa form present in mature chloroplasts, was characterised using biochemical and proteomic approaches. Sequential fractionation of thylakoid proteins from light‐induced mature chloroplasts showed that the 58 kDa form was associated with the thylakoid membrane, behaving as a soluble or peripheral membrane protein. Two‐dimensional gel electrophoresis discriminated, for the first time, the 58‐kDa band in two different forms, probably corresponding to the two different TGase cDNAs previously cloned. Electrophoretic separation of thylakoid proteins in native gels, followed by LC‐MS mass spectrometry identification of protein complexes indicated that maize chlTGase forms part of a specific PSII protein complex, which includes LHCII, ATPase and pSbS proteins. The results are discussed in relation to the interaction between these proteins and the suggested role of the enzyme in thylakoid membrane organisation and photoprotection.  相似文献

The uptake of[3H]choline from thecerebrospinal fluid (CSF) side of the rat neonatal choroid plexus wascharacterized in primary cultures of the choroidal epithelium grown onsolid supports. Cell-to-medium concentration ratios were ~5 at 1 minand as high as 70 at 30 min. Apical choline uptake was facilitated; theKm was ~50µM. Several organic cations (e.g., hemicholinium-3 and N1-methylnicotinamide)inhibited uptake. The reduction or removal of externalNa+ or the addition of 5 mM LiClhad no effect on uptake. However, increasing externalK+ concentration from 3 to 30 mMdepolarized ventricular membrane potential (70 to 15 mV)and reduced uptake to 45% of that for the control. Treatment with 1 mMouabain or 2 mM BaCl2 reduced uptake 45%, and intracellular acidification reduced uptake to ~90%of that for controls. These data indicate that the uptake of choline from CSF across the ventricular membrane of the neonatal choroidal epithelium is not directly coupled toNa+ influx but is sensitive toplasma membrane electrical potential.

Neyraiella distinctus n. sp. was found parasitizing nymphs of the cricket Gryllodes laplatae Sauss in City Bell, Argentina. This species was characterized by having the excretory pore in the posterior end of the basal bulb, vulva protruding with one lip well developed in the 1/3 end of the body, anus of the female with wings, male with a single spicule without any sculpture, gubernaculum and bursa are absent, six pairs of genital papillae arranged in two preanal pairs, one adanal pair and three postanal pairs, and the tail appendage in both sexes was short and conic.  相似文献

Background  

Little is known about phytoplankton communities inhabiting low pH environments such as volcanic and geothermal sites or acidic waters. Only specialised organisms are able to tolerate such extreme conditions. There is, thus, low species diversity. We have characterised the previously isolated acid tolerant Chlorella -like microalgae Viridiella fridericiana and Chlorella protothecoides var. acidicola by microscopical and biomolecular methods in order to assess their phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

Summary We have developed micropropagation systems for 21 species of Mexican cacti using explants from seedlings germinatedin vitro or shoot segments of juvenile 2–3-yr-old greenhouse plants. The species propagated belong to the generaAstrophytum, Cephalocereus, Coryphantha, Echinocactus, Echinocereus, Echinofossulocactus, Ferocactus, Mammillaria, Nyctocereus, andStenocactus. Multiple shoot formation from areoles was achieved in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with either 1 or 2 mg N6-benzyladenine (BA) per 1 (4.44 or 8.87 μM) or BA at 1 or 2 mg/l plus naphthaleneacetic acid at 0.1 or 1 mg/l (0.54 or 5.37 μM). The requirements of growth regulators for optimal shoot proliferation, the velocity of the response, and the number of buds produced by explant were different among the genera and species studied. Rooting of the shoots generatedin vitro was achieved in MS medium supplemented with indoleacetic acid at 0.5–1 mg/l (2.85–5.71 μM) or indolebutyric acid at 0.5–1 mg/l (2.46–4.90 μM). Finally, 70–95% of the rooted plants transferred to potting medium survived.  相似文献

The organization of filamentous actin (F-actin) in living cells of the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi was determined during zoosporogenesis and zoospore encystment by microinjecting sporangia with fluorescently labeled phalloidin and observing resultant fluorescence by confocal microscopy. In multinucleate sporangia prior to the induction of cleavage, phalloidin labeling took the form of plaques which occurred mainly in the periphery of the sporangia. After induction of cleavage, phalloidin labeling showed that the plaques disappeared and that F-actin began to accumulate along the developing cleavage planes and around nuclei and water expulsion vacuoles. F-actin labeling was also observed near the plasma membrane in zoospores and young cysts but reverted to the plaque form in older cysts. Localization of F-actin close to the developing cleavage planes is consistent with the idea that actin microfilaments function in the positioning and expansion of the cleavage membranes. Observations of plaques of actin in living sporangia provide evidence that plaques are not aldehyde-induced fixation artifacts. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.  相似文献

By immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization at the electron microscopy level, and by the PCR technique, we have shown that HIV-1 binds and enters normal sperm; that viral particles, their antigens, and nucleic acid are present in sperm from HIV-1 infected men; and that such sperm can transfer HIV-1 like particles to normal human oocytes. We also present evidence that a galactosylceramide-like compound is present on the sperm membrane and could function as an alternative receptor for HIV.  相似文献
