It was recently suggested that beta diversity can be partitioned into contributions of single sites to overall beta diversity (LCBD) or into contributions of individual species to overall beta diversity (SCBD). We explored the relationships of LCBD and SCBD to site and species characteristics, respectively, in stream insect assemblages. We found that LCBD was mostly explained by variation in species richness, with a negative relationship being detected. SCBD was strongly related to various species characteristics, such as occupancy, abundance, niche position and niche breadth, but was only weakly related to biological traits of species. In particular, occupancy and its quadratic terms showed a very strong unimodal relationship with SCBD, suggesting that intermediate species in terms of site occupancy contribute most to beta diversity. Our findings of unravelling the contributions of sites or species to overall beta diversity are of high importance to community ecology, conservation and bioassessment using stream insect assemblages, and may bear some overall generalities to be found in other organism groups. 相似文献

The hair cells of the vertebrate inner ear convert mechanical stimuli to electrical signals. Two adaptation mechanisms are known to modify the ionic current flowing through the transduction channels of the hair bundles: a rapid process involves Ca(2+) ions binding to the channels; and a slower adaptation is associated with the movement of myosin motors. We present a mathematical model of the hair cell which demonstrates that the combination of these two mechanisms can produce "self-tuned critical oscillations", i.e., maintain the hair bundle at the threshold of an oscillatory instability. The characteristic frequency depends on the geometry of the bundle and on the Ca(2+) dynamics, but is independent of channel kinetics. Poised on the verge of vibrating, the hair bundle acts as an active amplifier. However, if the hair cell is sufficiently perturbed, other dynamical regimes can occur. These include slow relaxation oscillations which resemble the hair bundle motion observed in some experimental preparations. 相似文献

Cytoplasmic dynein moves processively along microtubules, but the mechanism of how its heads use the energy from ATP hydrolysis, coupled to a linker swing, to achieve directed motion, is still unclear. In this article, we present a theoretical model based on the winch mechanism in which the principal direction of the linker stroke is toward the microtubule-binding domain. When mechanically coupling two identical heads (each with postulated elastic properties and a minimal ATPase cycle), the model reproduces stepping with 8-nm steps (even though the motor itself is much larger), interhead coordination, and processivity, as reported for mammalian dyneins. Furthermore, when we loosen the elastic connection between the heads, the model still shows processive directional stepping, but it becomes uncoordinated and the stepping pattern shows a greater variability, which reproduces the properties of yeast dyneins. Their slower chemical kinetics allows processive motility and a high stall force without the need for coordination. 相似文献

The expansion of genome sequencing projects has produced accumulating evidence for lateral transfer of genes between prokaryotic
and eukaryotic genomes. However, it remains controversial whether these genes are of functional importance in their recipient
host. Nikoh and Nakabachi, in a recent paper in BMC Biology, take a first step and show that two genes of bacterial origin are highly expressed in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Active gene expression of transferred genes is supported by three other recent studies. Future studies should reveal whether
functional proteins are produced and whether and how these are targeted to the appropriate compartment. We argue that the
transfer of genes between host and symbiont may occasionally be of great evolutionary importance, particularly in the evolution
