Summary Bird densities were estimated on 41 small islands and two mainland plots at a South Swedish lake both in 1976 and 1983. In the latter year, three additional plots were also censused. The ratio between combined densities of hole-nesting birds on the mainland and on islands was 3:1 both in plots without and with nest boxes. In plots with boxes combined densities of hole-nesting birds doubled compared with control plots. This increase was caused by a tenfold increase of pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca. Territories of this species were on average established about a week later on the islands compared with the mainland. Furthermore, 50% of the males on the islands did not attract a female. Densities of great tit Parus major, marsh tit Parus palustris and nuthatch Sitta europaea were unaffected by increased nesthole availability. For P. major this result contrasts with those in other studies.The density of chaffinch Fringilla coelebs in habitats with similar height and vertical structure was two times higher on the islands compared to the mainland. On the islands the density was the same on islands with only one pair and on those with two or more pairs. In spring, there were no significant differences between islands and the mainland in the proportion of leaves with insect feeding traces. The proportion of Salix leaves with feeding traces increased with island size, but this was not so for Alnus and Betula leaves. In late summer, the proportion of leaves with feeding traces were halved inside a plot with nest boxes and hence increased bird densities compared to a nearby control plot. This result was the same along the lake shore and about 150 m away from the shore.The discussion centers on the effect of man on the food-and nest site-availability of hole-nesting birds, food limitation of insectivorous birds and density compensation on islands.  相似文献

Summary The influence of food quantity and quality on growth and survival of Onychiurus armatus (Tullb.) in metal polluted environments has been investigated in laboratory experiments. The Collembola was reared on five species of fungi isolated from a metal polluted soil close to a brass mill in SE Sweden.Survival of O. armatus was improved when fungal biomass was continuously added in a polluted mor (1,300 ppm Zn and 200 ppm Cu), and when specimens were fed metal polluted fungi for 1, 3 and 7 days a week, only those that were starved had increased mortality. Allometric growth, on the other hand, was significantly reduced when Collembola was given surplus of metal polluted fungi, whereas growth losses caused by metals were offset by protein rich food. Hence, sufficient food quantities alone could overcome mortality losses but not growth retardation in a metal polluted environment.Feeding preference of O. armatus was not determined by the protein content of the fungi although this was beneficial for growth. Metals changed the relative palatability of fungal species, but one of the metal tolerant species, Paecilomyces farinosus, which was also protein rich, remained reasonably attractive for O. armatus also when it was metal polluted. The mechanisms by which growth and survival of O. armatus were promoted by a combination of protein and Zn/Cu rich fungi seemed to be crucial in understanding the fate of a population of this species in a metal polluted soil.  相似文献

Summary The spatial and temporal variation of lead conductance (g) in Eucalyptus pauciflora was analysed with respect to photon flux area density (I), temperature (T), water vapour concentration deficit (w), and leaf water potential () at four different sites between 940 m and 2,040 m altitude in the Snowy Mountains of south-eastern Australia. Along this altitudinal gradient the precipitation/evaporation ratio increases from 1 to 4. The results show that gas diffusion in this tree species is primarily controlled by I and w at all sites, independently of the specific soil moisture regime. Even under dry midsummer conditions with predawn leaf water potentials of-1 MPa at the lowest altitude, had no striking effect on g.The humidity threshold for the onset of stomatal closure does not vary greatly between the study sites (12.2±1.3 Pa kPa-1). The highest and lowest values observed for , the osmotic potential at water saturation (from pressure/volume curves), the mean and maximum g and stomatal dentity, all increase with elevation. The highest (least negative) osmotic potentials were obtained at all sites in midsummer. It therefore appears that there is no osmotic adjustment to drought in the seasonal course. The maximum difference between osmotic potentials obtained at the lowest and highest sites is 0.46 MPa. In general osmotic potential varies less than has been reported for other plant species exposed to varying water regimes. This may be the consequence of the pronounced feed-forward response of the stomata to evaporative demand, which led to only moderate tissue desiccation, never exceeding the turgor loss point. E. pauciflora is a tree species with a very conservative utilisation of soil water, which adjusts to drought via stomatal control of water loss, rather than via osmotic properties.These results explain previous reports of the comparatively high susceptibility of E. pauciflora to severe drought and its positive influence on the hydrological balance of mountain ecosystems in the Australian Alps.  相似文献

Summary Five bird species were examined in order to ascertain if any changes in flight muscle catabolism take place between breeding season and migration. Two different patterns were discovered. The first consists of a high oxidative capacity and a low glycolytic and anaerobic capacity during migration. The converse occurs during the breeding season, i.e. low oxidative, high glycolytic and anaerobic capacity. The pattern was found in those species that deposit large amounts of fat prior to migration. The second pattern was similar to the first, but there was no change in fatty acid oxidation capacity between breeding season and migration. The pattern was found in those species that do not deposit much fat towards migration. These changes are believed to reflect differences in migration strategy and differences in locomotory activity during different seasons. Deviations from these patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Our field surveys conducted in 10 Hungarian grape producing areas have revealed that the nutrient contents of vine leaves of different grape varieties were closely correlated with the EUF-nutrient contents of different soil types with different contents of clay. Constitutively produced extracellular pectinesterases from culture filtrates of the potato late blight fungus Phytophthora infestans were purified and characterized. One enzyme (PE II) was purified to homogeneity. Sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis of the second enzyme (PE I) revealed two protein bands; there are indications that both proteins are pectinesterases, which were not separable by a number of different techniques. Thus, P. infestans might produce three pectinesterases in vitro. Enzyme activities were optimal in the neutral pH range and were largely dependent on the presence of NaCl or CaCl2 in the reaction medium. The molecular weight of the PE I-complex was between 45 and 48 kilodaltons, and the one of PE II was between 35 and 40 kilodaltons. Further investigations will help us to clarify the role of these enzymes during pathogenesis.  相似文献

The enzyme, phenoloxidase, was isolated and partially purified as an inactive enzyme, a proenzyme, from plant cell cultures of Daucus carota, Nicotiana tabacum, and Haplopappus gracilis. The prophenoloxidase was found to be specifically activated by Ca2+ or Mn2+ ions in concentrations above 1 millimolar. Calmodulin was not involved in this activation. Concentrations of Ca2+ or Mn2+ below 1 millimolar could not induce activation of the prophenoloxidase, but if trypsin was added simultaneously with Ca2+ or Mn2+ at a concentration of 1 millimolar or below, the proenzyme was converted to its active form. The inactive form of phenoloxidase was found to be a soluble enzyme, whereas after activation the enzyme aggregated, and a significant amount of the enzyme activity could become pelleted.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria acclimate to changes in light by adjusting the amounts of different cellular compounds, for example the light-harvesting macromolecular complex. Described are the acclimatization responses in the light-harvesting system of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans following a shift from high intensity, white light to low intensity, red light.

The phycocyanin and chlorophyll content and the relative amount of the two linker peptides (33 and 30 kilodaltons) in the phycobilisome were studied. Both the phycocyanin and chlorophyll content per cell increased after the shift, although the phycocyanin increased relatively more. The increase in phycocyanin was biphasic in nature, a fast initial phase and a slower second phase, while the chlorophyll increase was completed in one phase. The phycocyanin and chlorophyll responses to red light were immediate and were completed within 30 and 80 hours for chlorophyll and phycocyanin, respectively. An immediate response was also seen for the two phycobilisome linker peptides. The amount of both of them increased after the shift, although the 33 kilodalton linker peptide increased faster than the 30 kilodalton linker peptide. The increase of the content of the two linker peptides stopped when the phycocyanin increase shifted from the first to the second phase. We believe that the first phase of phycocyanin increase was due mainly to an increase in the phycobilisome size while the second phase was caused only by an increase in the amount of phycobilisomes. The termination of chlorophyll accumulation, which indicates that no further reaction center chlorophyll antennae were formed, occurred parallel to the onset of the second phase of phycocyanin accumulation.

Summary This paper describes the development of pollen grains ofGasteria verrucosa from the late microspore to the mature two-cellular pollen grain. Ultrastructural changes and the distribution of plastids as a result of the first pollen mitosis have been investigated using light and electron microscopy. The microspores as well as the generative and the vegetative cell contain mitochondria and other cytoplasmic organelles during all of the observed developmental stages. In contrast, the generative cell and the vegetative cell show a different plastid content. Plastids are randomly distributed within the microspores before pollen mitosis. During the prophase of the first pollen mitosis the plastids become clustered at the proximal pole of the microspore. The dividing nucleus of the microspore is located at the distal pole of the microspore. Therefore, the plastids are not equally distributed into both the generative and the vegetative cell. The possible reasons for the polarization of plastids within the microspore are briefly discussed. The lack of plastids in the generative cell causes a maternal inheritance of plastids inGasteria verrucosa.  相似文献
