Oxidative stress and antioxidants have been related in a wide variety of ways with nervous tissue. This review attempts to gather the most relevant information related to a) the antioxidant status in non pathologic nervous tissue; b) the hypothesis and evidence for oxidative stress (considered as the disequilibrium between prooxidants and antioxidants in the cell) as the responsible mechanism of diverse neurological diseases; and c) the correlation between antioxidant alterations and neural function, in different experimental neuropathies. Decreased antioxidant availability has been observed in different neurological disorders in the central nervous system, for example, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral ischaemia, etc. Moreover, the experimental manipulation of the antioxidant defense has led in some cases to interesting experimental models in which electrophysiological alterations are associated with the metabolic modifications induced. In view of the electrophysiological and biochemical effects of some protein kinase C inhibitors on different neural experimental models, special attention is dedicated to the role of this kinase in peripheral nervous tissue. The nervous tissue, central as well as peripheral, has two main special features that are certainly related to its antioxidant metabolism: the lipid-enriched membrane and myelin sheaths, and cellular excitability. The former explains the importance of the glutathione (GSH)-conjugating activity towards 4-hydroxy-nonenal, a biologically active product of lipid peroxidation, present in nervous tissue and in charge of its inactivation. The impairment of the latter by oxidative damage or experimental manipulation of antioxidant metabolism is discussed. Work on different experimental neuropathies from author's laboratory has been primarily used to provide information about the involvement of free radical damage and antioxidants in peripheral nerve metabolic and functional impairment. 相似文献

Many protein regions have been shown to be intrinsically disordered, lacking unique structure under physiological conditions. These intrinsically disordered regions are not only very common in proteomes, but also crucial to the function of many proteins, especially those involved in signaling, recognition, and regulation. The goal of this work was to identify the prevalence, characteristics, and functions of conserved disordered regions within protein domains and families. A database was created to store the amino acid sequences of nearly one million proteins and their domain matches from the InterPro database, a resource integrating eight different protein family and domain databases. Disorder prediction was performed on these protein sequences. Regions of sequence corresponding to domains were aligned using a multiple sequence alignment tool. From this initial information, regions of conserved predicted disorder were found within the domains. The methodology for this search consisted of finding regions of consecutive positions in the multiple sequence alignments in which a 90% or more of the sequences were predicted to be disordered. This procedure was constrained to find such regions of conserved disorder prediction that were at least 20 amino acids in length. The results of this work included 3,653 regions of conserved disorder prediction, found within 2,898 distinct InterPro entries. Most regions of conserved predicted disorder detected were short, with less than 10% of those found exceeding 30 residues in length. 相似文献

Solid retention time (SRT) is a very important operational variable in continuous and semicontinuous waste treatment processes since the organic matter removal efficiency - expressed in terms of percentage of Dissolved Organic Carbon (% DOC) or Volatile Solids (% VS) removed - and the biogas or methane production are closely related with the SRT imposed. Optimum SRT is depending on the waste characteristics and the microorganisms involved in the process and, hence, it should be determined specifically in each case.In this work a series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of SRT, from 40 to 8 days, on the performance of the dry (30% Total Solids) thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes (OFMSW) operating at semicontinuous regime of feeding.The experimental results show than 15 days is the optimum SRT (the best between all proved) for this process. Besides, data of organic matter concentration and methane production versus SRT have been used to obtain the kinetic parameters of the kinetic model of Romero García (1991): the maximum specific growth rate of the microorganisms (μmax = 0.580 days−1) and the fraction of substrate non-biodegradable (α = 0.268). 相似文献

Differences in the accumulation of seven metallic elements, including micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) and non-essential elements (Cd and Pb) among plant organs (leaves, roots and rhizomes) were examined in the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa. Samples were taken from two coastal bays (Catalonia, Western Mediterranean), with a total of nine sampling sites encompassing different levels of metal availability. Metal content was generally higher in uptake organs (leaves and roots) than in rhizomes. However, accumulation in leaves and roots varied between elements. While Cd, Mn and Zn preferentially accumulate in leaves, Fe and Pb accumulate in roots and Cu and Ni in both. There were common spatial (between sites) trends in Cd, Mn, Cu and Zn accumulation in the three organs. However, these spatial trends varied according to the organ considered in the case of Fe, Pb, and Ni. Therefore, assessment of within-plant variability is strongly recommended prior to the use of C. nodosa for biomonitoring purposes, at least for Fe, Pb, and Ni. 相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are the most threatened ecosystems worldwide. Argentinian‐protected areas have been established mainly to protect vertebrates and plants in terrestrial ecosystems. In order to create a comprehensive biodiverse conservation plan, it is crucial to integrate both aquatic and terrestrial systems and to include macroinvertebrates. Here, we address this topic by proposing priority areas of conservation including invertebrates, aquatic ecosystems, and their connectivity and land uses. Location: Northwest of Argentina. We modeled the ecological niches of different taxa of macroinvertebrates such as Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera, Lepidoptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Acari, and Mollusca. Based on these models, we analyzed the contribution of currently established protected areas in the conservation of the aquatic biodiversity and we propose a spatial prioritization taking into account possible conflict regarding different land uses. Our analysis units were the real watersheds, to which were added longitudinal connectivity up and down the rivers. A total of 132 species were modeled in the priority area analyses. The analysis 1 showed that only an insignificant percentage of the macroinvertebrates distribution is within the protected areas in the North West of Argentina. The analyses 2 and 3 recovered similar values of protection for the macroinvertebrate species. The upper part of Bermejo, Salí‐Dulce, San Francisco, and the Upper part of Juramento basins were identified as priority areas of conservation. The aquatic ecosystems need special protection and 10% or even as much as 17% of land conservation is insufficient for species of macroinvertebrates. In turn the protected areas need to combine the aquatic and terrestrial systems and need to include macroinvertebrates as a key group to sustain the biodiversity. In many cases, the land uses are in conflict with the conservation of biodiversity; however, it is possible to apply the connectivity of the watersheds and create multiple‐use modules. 相似文献
