Recent evidence indicates that fruit size has evolved according to dispersers' size. This is hypothesized to result from a balance between factors favouring large seeds and dispersers setting the maximum fruit size. This hypothesis assumes that (1) the size of fruits that can be consumed by dispersers is limited, (2) fruit and seed size are positively correlated, and (3) the result of multiple selection pressures on seed size is positive. Our studies on the seed dispersal mutualism of Olea europaea have supported the first and second assumptions, but valid tests of the third assumption are still lacking. Here we confirm the third assumption. Using multiplicative fitness components, we show that conflicting selection pressures on seed size during and after dispersal reverse the negative pattern of selection exerted by dispersers. 相似文献

This research documents the removal of the dye Gris Lanaset G from aqueous solutions by fungal pellets. Adsorption of the dye by dead biomass pellets of Trametes versicolor was determined and compared with dye removal by enzymatic degradation. Six kinetic equations were fitted to the experimental adsorption data obtained. The results indicate that kinetics such as the Elovich equation, which considers that the rate-controlling step is the diffusion of the dye molecules, show the best fit. Nonlinear Langmuir and Freundlich equations were also fitted into the adsorption data, and it can be concluded that the adsorption equilibrium can be interpreted by the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption plays an important role in the process of the elimination of color from textile wastewater, although not all of the elimination is due to this physical process when the microorganism is active. The removal of color (around 90%) with active microorganisms is greater than that obtained with the adsorption process. 相似文献

Olive oil mill waste waters decoloration and detoxification in a bioreactor by the white rot fungus Phanerochaete flavido-alba 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) is produced as waste in olive oil extraction. With the purpose of treating this highly polluting waste, a number of experiments were conducted in a laboratory-scale bioreactor with the white rot fungus Phanerochaete flavido-alba (P. flavido-alba). It is known that this fungus is capable of decolorizing OMW in static or semistatic cultures at Erlenmeyer scale and at 30 degrees C. The objective of this work was to prove that P. flavido-alba could decolorize OMW in submerged cultures and that it is capable of reducing OMW toxicity at room temperature (25 degrees C) and in a laboratory-scale bioreactor. In the experiments conducted, manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase enzymes were detected; however, unlike other studies, lignin peroxidase was not found to be present. Decoloration obtained after treatment was 70%. The reduction of aromatic compounds obtained was 51%, and the toxicity of the culture medium was reduced by up to 70%. We can therefore state that P. flavido-alba is capable of reducing important environmental parameters of industrial effluents and that prospects are positive for the use of this process at a larger scale, even when working at room temperature. 相似文献

The gonadal development of chicken embryo is regulated by hormones and growth factors. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) isoforms may play a critical role in the regulation of growth in chicken gonads. We have investigated the effect of the TGF-β isoforms on the number of germ and somatic cells in the ovary of the chicken embryo. Ovaries were obtained from chicken embryos at 9 days of incubation. They were organ-cultured for 72 h in groups treated with TGF-β1, TGF-β2, soluble betaglycan, TGF-β1 plus soluble betaglycan, or TGF-β2 plus soluble betaglycan, and untreated (control). TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 diminished the somatic cell number in the ovary of the chicken embryo at this age by inhibiting the proliferation of the somatic cells without increasing apoptosis. On the other hand, TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 did not affect the number of germ cells in the cultured ovary. The capacity of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 to diminish the number of somatic cells in the ovary was blocked with soluble betaglycan, a natural TGF-β antagonist. However, changes in the location of germ cells within the ovary suggested that TGF-β promoted the migration of the germ cells from the ovarian cortex to the medulla. Thus, TGF-β affects germ and somatic cells in the ovary of the 9-day-old chicken embryo and inhibits the proliferation of somatic cells.This work was supported by DGAPA-UNAM (IN214403) and CONACYT (45030). 相似文献

Pig brain cerebral cortex was subfractionated by isopycnic centrifugation in sucrose gradients. In each subfraction the content of the agonist [3H]R-PIA binding, the activity of adenosine metabolizing enzymes (5-nucleotidase and adenosine deaminase) and the activity of membrane marker enzymes were determined. The fractions were also examined by electron microscope. In general, the results suggest a widespread distribution of A1 adenosine receptors in membranes from different origins. Marker enzyme profile characterization indicated an enrichment of A1 adenosine receptor in pre-synaptic membranes isolated from the crude synaptosomal fraction (P2B subfraction) as well as in membranes of glial origin such as myelin. The receptor is also present in the endoplasmic reticulum and in membranes isolated from the microsomal fraction that seem to have a post-synaptic origin (P3B). In subfractions having a high content of adenosine receptor the equilibrium binding paramters were obtained as well as the proportion of high- to low-affinity sites. From the values of the equilibrium constants it was not possible to find differences between the receptor in the different subfractions. Analysis of the affinity state distribution showed a diminished percentage of high-affinity sites in fraction P3A, which can be accounted by the existence of myelin membranes; in contrast the percentage of high-affinity states was higher in P2 and P3B, indicating that in these fractions the receptor is present in synaptosomal membranes. The close correlation shown between the enzyme 5-nucleotidase specific activity and the specific ligand binding distributions led us to postulate an important role for the enzyme in the regulation of adenosine action in pig brain cortex. 相似文献

The regulation of autophagy in metazoans is only partly understood, and there is a need to identify the proteins that control this process. The diabetes‐ and obesity‐regulated gene (DOR), a recently reported nuclear cofactor of thyroid hormone receptors, is expressed abundantly in metabolically active tissues such as muscle. Here, we show that DOR shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm, depending on cellular stress conditions, and re‐localizes to autophagosomes on autophagy activation. We demonstrate that DOR interacts physically with autophagic proteins Golgi‐associated ATPase enhancer of 16 kDa (GATE16) and microtubule‐associated protein 1A/1B‐light chain 3. Gain‐of‐function and loss‐of‐function studies indicate that DOR stimulates autophagosome formation and accelerates the degradation of stable proteins. CG11347, the DOR Drosophila homologue, has been predicted to interact with the Drosophila Atg8 homologues, which suggests functional conservation in autophagy. Flies lacking CG11347 show reduced autophagy in the fat body during pupal development. All together, our data indicate that DOR regulates autophagosome formation and protein degradation in mammalian and Drosophila cells. 相似文献

Gene expression throughout the different stages of Alzheimer's disease was analysed in samples from cerebral cortex. The gene encoding the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv3.4 was already overexpressed in early stages of the disease, and in advanced stages Kv3.4 was present at high levels in neurodegenerative structures. This subunit regulates delayed-rectifier currents, which are primary determinants of spike repolarization in neurones. In unique samples from a patient with Alzheimer's disease whose amount of amyloid plaques was decreased by beta amyloid immunization, Kv3.4 was overexpressed. The channel subunit was expressed in the neuropil, in the remaining conventional plaques in the frontal cortex and in collapsed plaques in the orbitary cortex. Therefore, amyloid deposition in plaques does not seem to be responsible for the increase in Kv3.4 levels. Nevertheless, Kv3.4 up-regulation is related to amyloid pathology, given that transgenic mice with the Swedish mutation of amyloid precursor protein showed increased expression of Kv3.4. Up-regulation of voltage-gated potassium channel subunits alters potassium currents in neurones and leads to altered synaptic activity that may underlie the neurodegeneration observed in Alzheimer's disease. Thus, Kv3.4 likely represents a novel therapeutic target for the disease. 相似文献

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging nosocomial bacterial pathogen associated with several infectious diseases and opportunistic infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. These bacteria adhere avidly to medical implants and catheters forming a biofilm that confers natural protection against host immune defences and different antimicrobial agents. The nature of the bacterial surface factors involved in biofilm formation on inert surfaces and in adherence of S. maltophilia to epithelial cells is largely unknown. In this study, we identified and characterized fimbrial structures produced by S. maltophilia grown at 37 degrees C. The S. maltophilia fimbriae 1 (SMF-1) are composed of a 17 kDa fimbrin subunit which shares significant similarities with the N-terminal amino acid sequences of several fimbrial adhesins (G, F17, K99 and 20K) found in Escherichia coli pathogenic strains and the CupA fimbriae of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. All of the clinical S. maltophilia isolates tested produced the 17 kDa fimbrin. Antibodies raised against SMF-1 fimbriae inhibited the agglutination of animal erythrocytes, adherence to HEp-2 cells and biofilm formation by S. maltophilia. High resolution electron microscopy provided evidence of the presence of fimbriae acting as bridges between bacteria adhering to inert surfaces or to cultured epithelial cells. This is the first characterization of fimbriae in this genus. We provide compelling data suggesting that the SMF-1 fimbriae are involved in haemagglutination, biofilm formation and adherence to cultured mammalian cells. 相似文献
