A survey of nasal mites, primarily from birds in Texas, was reported and comparisons with the other major studies were made. Of 103 host species examined, 40 were parasitized, and of 502 individual birds examined, 87 were parasitized (17% prevalence). It was shown that the prevalence of infection was significantly dependent on the bird taxa examined, which indicates that the evolution of the hosts has affected the nasal mites' ability to parasitize their avian hosts. It was also shown that the prevalence of rhinonyssid nasal mites in their hosts seems to differ significantly between geographic regions. 相似文献

Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcal meningitis in immunocompromised individuals. Existing antifungal treatment plans have high mammalian toxicity and increasing drug resistance, demonstrating the dire need for new, nontoxic therapeutics. Antimicrobial peptoids are one alternative to combat this issue. Our lab has recently identified a tripeptoid, AEC5, with promising efficacy and selectivity against C. neoformans. Here, we report studies into the broad-spectrum efficacy, killing kinetics, mechanism of action, in vivo half-life, and subchronic toxicity of this compound. Most notably, these studies have demonstrated that AEC5 rapidly reduces fungal burden, killing all viable fungi within 3 hours. Additionally, AEC5 has an in vivo half-life of 20+ hours and no observable in vivo toxicity following 28 days of daily injections. This research represents an important step in the characterization of AEC5 as a practical treatment option against C. neoformans infections. 相似文献

Dipeptidyl aminopeptidase II (DAP II) was demonstrated cytochemically at light and electron microscope levels in rat macrophages and mast cells using Lys-Ala-4-methoxy-2-naphthylamide as a specific substrate. The enzyme which was found to be lysosomal in both cell types, was analyzed biochemically in extracts by measuring fluorometrically the liberated naphthylamine, and was visualized in sections microscopically using azo-coupling methods. DAP II was further characterized by isoelectric focusing techniques. Macrophage DAP II was found to be typical of that found in other rat tissues in terms of its structural latency, substrate specificity, inhibitor sensitivities, and pH activator requirements. The oxidation of uric acid and 3-N-ribosyluric acid by hydrogen peroxide and methemoglobin was stimulated by the addition of sodium nitrite, which alone has no effect on the urates. The urates were not oxidized by either hydrogen peroxide alone or hydrogen peroxide and sodium nitrite unless methemoglobin was present. t-Butyl hydroperoxide also oxidized the urates in the presence of methemoglobin, but the reaction was not stimulated by sodium nitrite. The addition of either sodium azide or potassium cyanide reduced the rate of the reaction with either hydrogen peroxide or t-butyl hydroperoxide both in the presence and absence of sodium nitrite.
