This study describes the biological importance of Guajará Bay (Belém, Pará, Brazil) for fish fauna and presents a diagnosis of water quality in the main channel and creeks, using the icthyofauna as an ecological indicator. A total of 567 individuals from 40 species were identified. About 58% of these use Guajará Bay as a nursery ground, 49 and 81% use the bay as a breeding and feeding ground, respectively. There were no significant differences between environments as measured by the diversity index; however, fish relative abundance (catch per unit of effort) was greater in the creeks than in the main channel. A significant difference was detected in the fish fauna inhabiting the main channel compared with the creeks. In the main channel, icthyofauna significantly differed during December relative to other months. 相似文献

Studies about selenium status in patients with Turner syndrome (TS) are non-existent in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate selenium status in patients with TS, while considering the different ages of the studied population and the relation with body composition. In total, 33 patients with TS were evaluated and grouped according to their developmental stages (children, adolescents, and adults). Selenium concentrations in their plasma, erythrocytes, urine, and nails were determined by using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity were measured by using Randox commercial kits. Additionally, height, weight, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and waist-height ratio were measured to characterize the patients. No differences in the selenium concentrations in the plasma, erythrocyte, urine, and nails or in the glutathione peroxidase activity were observed among the age groups (p > 0.05). The evaluated selenium levels were less than the established normal ones. The patients with larger waist circumference, body fat percentage, body mass index, and waist-height ratio showed lower glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity (p = 0.023). The present study shows that most patients with TS are deficient in selenium and that those with a greater accumulation of body fat have a lower GPx activity. 相似文献

Ninety-five nests of Centris (Heterocentris) terminata Smith were collected in trap-nests, during November/2001 and January/2003, at two fragments (PZGV e CFO-UFBA) of secondary Atlantic Forest, in Salvador, Bahia State (13 masculine01 W e 38 masculine30 S). The highest nest frequencies occurred from December to February (summer), with no nests foundations from August to October (winter - early spring). Two-hundred eight adults emerged from 347 brood cells, being 164 males and 116 females (1: 0.42). During the study period sex ratio was male biased (c2 = 9.342; gl = 10; P < 0.05). C. terminata nested in holes with diameters 6, 8, 10 mm, but 84,2% were constructed in 8 and 10 mm. nests had one to seven cells arranged in a linear series with the cells partitions built with a mixture of sand and resin or oil. Male is significantly smaller than female, which emerges from the first cells constructed. Immature mortality occurred in 14.1% of brood cells (n = 49), of which 13.0% were due fail in development and 1.2% due to parasitism of Coelioxys sp. (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) e Tetraonyx sp. (Coleoptera: Meloidae). In the study site, weather, mainly pluviosity, rather than natural enemies influenced seasonal population abundance. The long period of nesting activity, local abundance and usage of trap nests, suggest the potential of C. terminata for management aiming at pollination of native and cultivated plants. 相似文献

Bovine preantral follicles within ovarian fragments were exposed and cryopreserved in absence or presence of 1.5 M glycerol (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), propanediol (PROH) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), undergoing a previous cooling at 20 °C for 1 h (protocol 1) or at 4 °C for 24 h (protocol 2) in 0.9% saline solution. At the end of each treatment, preantral follicles were classified as non-viable/viable when they were stained/not stained with trypan blue, respectively. To confirm viability staining, ultra-structure of the follicles was evaluated by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). Data were compared by Chi-square test (P < 0.05). The storage of the ovaries at 20 °C for 1 h (78%) and 4 °C for 24 h (80%) did not reduce significantly the percentage of viable preantral follicles when compared to the control (75%). Similar results were obtained when ovarian fragments, respectively, for protocols 1 and 2, were exposed to MEM (78 and 77%), 1.5 M EG (78 and 71%), as well as frozen in 1.5 M EG (74 and 77%). Percentages of viable follicles in control were similar to those observed after exposure (75%) and freezing (76%) in presence of 1.5 M DMSO only when protocol 1 was used. The increase of the concentration from 1.5 to 3.0 M, for all cryoprotectants, reduced significantly the percentage of viable preantral follicles after freezing. Ultra-structural analysis has confirmed trypan blue results, showing that not only basement membrane, but also organelles, were intact in viable preantral follicles. In conclusion, ovarian tissue cooling at 4 °C for 24 h before cryopreservation (protocol 2) does not affect the viability of bovine preantral follicles when 1.5 M EG is present in the cryopreservation medium. 相似文献

The purposes of this study were to observe the presence of diurnal rhythms in plasma ions and metabolites levels in Thoroughbred racehorses under physical training, and to determine the time of blood sampling in clinical investigations. Plasma calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and total proteins levels were studied over a 72-h period. Blood samples were taken every 4 hours from five male and five female Thoroughbred racehorses under physical training. COSINOR analyses (P = 0.05) were done. Plasma potassium and triglycerides showed significant diurnal rhythms, with its acrophases occurring at dark period. No significant diurnal rhythms of other variables were found. It was concluded that, in Thoroughbred racehorses, the optimum time for potassium, and triglycerides sampling seems to be light period. And for other variables, time of diagnosis is not important. 相似文献

Compounds containing a quinone moiety represent an important class of biologically active molecules that are widespread in nature, displaying anticancer, antibacterial, antimalarial, and fungicidal activities. In the course of designing 2,3-disubstituted-1,4-naphthoquinones derivatives as potential cysteine protease inhibitors, two naphtho[2,3-d]isoxazole-4,9-dione-3-carboxylates, 1a and 1b, were obtained. The antiapoptotic potential of 1a and 1b was then evaluated and compared to that of naphthoquinone 4. Primary rat hepatocytes were incubated with synthesized naphthoquinone derivatives and then exposed to the apoptotic stimulus camptothecin. Our results indicate that naphtho[2,3-d]isoxazole-4,9-dione-3-carboxylates 1a and 1b exerted a potent protective role in camptothecin-induced apoptosis in primary rat hepatocytes. Both 1a and 1b significantly increased cell viability, while reducing nuclear fragmentation, caspase-3, -8 and -9 activation, and cytochrome c release induced by camptothecin. In addition, 1a and 1b were shown to up-regulate Bcl-XL, a pro-survival member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins, which modulates the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis. Similar protective effects of quinone derivatives were seen in HuH-7 and PC12 cells incubated with distinct apoptotic stimuli, such as camptothecin, TGF-β1, or rotenone. Our results suggest that naphtho[2,3-d]isoxazole-4,9-dione-3-carboxylates 1a and 1b may act as potent, cytoprotective agents, through modulation of apoptotic pathways. 相似文献

In the present work, we showed that a chalcone-enriched fraction (CEF) isolated from the stem bark of a Brazilian medicinal
plant, Myracrodruon
urundeuva, presents neuroprotective actions on 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced neuronal cell death, in rat mesencephalic cells.
In the MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium] assay, which is an index of cell viability, CEF (1–100 μg/ml)
reversed in a concentration-dependent manner the 6-OHDA-induced cell death. While cells exposed to 6-OHDA (40 μM) showed an
increased concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), the pretreatment with CEF (10–100 μg/ml) significantly
decreased the 6-OHDA-induced TBARS formation, indicative of a neuroprotection against lipoperoxidation. Furthermore, the drastic
increase of nitrite levels induced by 6-OHDA, indicative of nitric oxide formation and free radicals production, was prevented
by CEF. Double staining with acridine orange/ethidium bromide showed that cultures exposed to 6-OHDA (40 and 200 μM) presented
an increase of apoptotic and necrotic cell numbers in a concentration-dependent manner. CEF (100 μg/ml) protected cells from
apoptosis and necrosis and increased number of cells presenting a normal morphology. The immunohistochemical analysis for
tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive neurons indicated that 6-OHDA (40 and 200 μM) caused a concentration-dependent loss of
TH+ and TH− neurons. CEF protected both cells types from 6-OHDA-induced cell death. All together, our results demonstrated
neuroprotective effects of chalcones, which are able to reduce oxidative stress and apoptotic injury caused by 6-OHDA. Our
findings suggest that chalcones could provide benefits, along with other therapies, in neurodegenerative injuries, such as

We perform a detailed investigation of the force × deformation curve in tether extraction from 3T3 cells by optical tweezers. Contrary to conventional wisdom about tethers extracted from cells, we find that actin filaments are present within them, so that a revised theory of tether pulling from cells is called for. We also measure steady and maximum tether force values significantly higher than previously published ones for 3T3 cells. Possible explanations for these differences are investigated. Further experimental support of the theory of force barriers for membrane tube extension is obtained. The potential of studies on tether pulling force × deformation for retrieving information on membrane-cytoskeleton interaction is emphasized. 相似文献

The synthesis of six 3-aryl-5-(n-propyl)-4,5dihydro-1,2,4-oxadiazoles 3a-f has been achieved in a facile manner by the reaction of an appropriate arylamidoxime 1a-f with butyraldehyde 2. Oxidation of 3a-f individually using MnO(2) in CH(2)Cl(2) or sodium hypochlorite in THF/H(2)O furnished 1,2,4-oxadiazoles 4a-f in good to excellent yields. Compounds 4a-f were also evaluated against inflammation. Except 4e, all of them reduced inflammation, however, 4c presented better antiinflammatory activity. A preliminary antimicrobial activity tests of 3a-f showed that these compounds possess activity against some microorganisms. In fact, 3c and 3f have been found to be more effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium smegmatis, and Candida albicans. 相似文献
