Long-term population studies can identify changes in population dynamics over time. However, to realize meaningful conclusions, these studies rely on accurate measurements of individual traits and population characteristics. Here, we evaluate the accuracy of the observational methods used to measure reproductive traits in individually marked black-tailed godwits (Limosa limosa limosa). By comparing estimates from traditional methods with data obtained from light-level geolocators, we provide an accurate estimate of the likelihood of renesting in godwits and the repeatability of the lay dates of first clutches. From 2012 to 2018, we used periods of shading recorded on the light-level geolocators carried by 68 individual godwits to document their nesting behaviour. We then compared these estimates to those simultaneously obtained by our long-term observational study. We found that among recaptured geolocator-carrying godwits, all birds renested after a failed first clutch, regardless of the date of nest loss or the number of days already spent incubating. We also found that 43% of these godwits laid a second replacement clutch after a failed first replacement, and that 21% of these godwits renested after a hatched first clutch. However, the observational study correctly identified only 3% of the replacement clutches produced by geolocator-carrying individuals and designated as first clutches a number of nests that were actually replacement clutches. Additionally, on the basis of the observational study, the repeatability of lay date was 0.24 (95% CI 0.17–0.31), whereas it was 0.54 (95% CI 0.28–0.75) using geolocator-carrying individuals. We use examples from our own and other godwit studies to illustrate how the biases in our observational study discovered here may have affected the outcome of demographic estimates, individual-level comparisons, and the design, implementation and evaluation of conservation practices. These examples emphasize the importance of improving and validating field methodologies and show how the addition of new tools can be transformational.  相似文献

Source of immunoreactive inhibin in the chicken ovary.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
High concentrations of immunoreactive inhibin were detected in the plasma of the laying domestic hen using a heterologous RIA validated for use in the chicken. Cessation of egg production induced by restricting the intake of nutrients decreased circulating inhibin to approximately 20% of its original concentration within 8 days, indicating that the ovary is the major source of the measured material. Dissection of ovarian follicles revealed that inhibin is nearly exclusively produced in the granulosa cell layer. When expressed per milligram cell protein the concentration of inhibin decreased significantly in granulosa layers of follicles of succeeding order in the hierarchy (F4 to F1). The concentration of progesterone increased in the granulosa layers of the same follicles whereas oestradiol in the surrounding theca layers decreased. In vitro culture of granulosa cells derived from follicles at different stages of development confirmed the decrease in inhibin secretion as a function of follicular growth observed in vivo. The granulosa cell inhibin secretion is stimulated by LH as well as by FSH, the former being the most effective one. The physiological significance of these changes in inhibin concentration during follicular maturation requires further investigation. It may be concluded, however, that the chicken presents a useful model for the study of the endocrine as well as the paracrine function of ovarian inhibin.  相似文献

The influence of development and ethinylestradiol on low density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor mRNA and hepatic triglyceride lipase (HTGL) activity and mRNA levels was studied in rat liver and intestine. Intestinal LDL-receptor mRNA levels are maximal in the perinatal period, whereas liver LDL-receptor and HTGL mRNA levels are highest after weaning in adult life. All mRNA levels reach a maximum between day 15 and 20 when rats still consume a lipid-rich diet, and increase twofold during weaning. Liver and intestinal LDL-receptor mRNA levels are not influenced by ovariectomy, but increase after ethinylestradiol treatment. Liver LDL-receptor mRNA shows a dose-dependent increase after ethinylestradiol and a sevenfold rise in liver LDL-receptor mRNA is attained with a dose of 2000 micrograms/day. Intestinal LDL-receptor mRNA increases slightly more than twofold after ethinylestradiol and this increase is not dose-dependent. Changes in LDL-receptor mRNA are independent of changes in food intake induced by ethinylestradiol treatment, since they are still observed after pair-feeding. The ethinylestradiol-induced increases in LDL-receptor mRNA levels are reflected by decreased serum apoB levels. HTGL mRNA levels increase after ovariectomy and show a dose-dependent decrease after ethinylestradiol. Pair-feeding abolishes the increase seen after ovariectomy, while the estrogen-mediated decrease is attenuated. This paper investigates the rates of peat accumulation associated with different phases in the succession from open water to carr forest in shallow ponds created by peat dredging in The Netherlands. Four phases had been recognized in a previous study of aerial photographs for the period 1937–1990, i.e. open water (Aq), reed swamp (SA), brownmoss quaking fen (BM) and carr forest (CF). Peat accumulation rates were estimated by relating the amounts of organic matter stored to the data on the successional history for 21 different sites.The organic matter accumulation rates were highest in the SA phase (1.12 kg m-2 y-1 on a dry weight basis), intermediate in the BM and CF phases (0.49 and 0.58 kg m-2 y-1), and lowest in the Aq phase (0.26 kg m-2 y-1). These values are high in comparison with values determined for fen ecosystems with stratigraphic methods in combination with radiocarbon dating. The accumulation rates were inversely related to the average duration of the successional phases, suggesting that peat accumulation is a major driving force behind the succession.  相似文献
