To investigate the role of the retino-hypothalamic tract on fetal prolactin regulation, we examined the effect of ocular enucleation on fetal plasma prolactin. Eleven fetuses of Suffolk ewes were chronically catheterized during fall, and six of them were subjected to bilateral ocular enucleation. All ewes were kept at 12h:12h light:dark cycle (lights on at 0800 and off at 2000). The experiments were performed 5-9 days after surgery (GA control fetuses 125 +/- 1.5, optical enucleation 121.3 +/- 1.5 days). Blood samples were taken from fetuses hourly around the clock, and plasma prolactin and cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Luteinizing hormone (LH) and Growth hormone (GH) were measured in pooled plasma samples from control and enucleated fetuses by RIA. Average plasma prolactin was 5-fold lower in enucleated than in control fetuses (9.6 +/- 0.5 and 54.2 +/- 3.3 ng/ml, SEM; P < 0.005). Both control and enucleated fetuses presented circadian rhythm of prolactin with acrophase between 1400 and 1830 h. An enucleated fetus was tested for response of prolactin to TRH. Prolactin increased as described in the literature. There was no change in plasma concentration of cortisol, LH or GH after ocular enucleation. Our data indicate that the optical pathway participates in prolactin regulation in the fetal sheep.  相似文献

Coloniality is a breeding system that may produce benefits in terms of breeding success, although these advantages could vary according to factors such as colony size or nest position. We studied breeder's age in relation to nest position (peripheral or central) within the colony. In addition, we studied the relationship between breeding success and nest position, controlling for breeder's age, a highly correlated factor, in a White Stork Ciconia ciconia colony over a 7-year period. Our results show that central nests are mainly occupied by adult birds and had lower failure rates. However, controlling for breeder's age, nest position per se did not explain breeding success. The scarce predation and the lack of human disturbance in the study colony could explain the absence of differences in breeding success between different nest positions within the colony.  相似文献

Cementitious materials, mostly concrete and mortar, account for about one‐third of all materials extraction worldwide. Material flow data in this industry are still unsatisfactory, especially related to unused extraction materials, quarry wastes, and water consumption, aspects which usually are not included in environmental analysis studies. The aim of this study is to conduct a material flow analysis (MFA) of the Brazilian concrete and mortar supply chain to quantify material use efficiency (ME) and dematerialization potential. The MFA includes extraction, production, and construction stages for the following indicators: i) unused extraction; ii) quarry waste; iii) water consumption; iv) material wastage; v) raw material consumption; vi) energy carriers; and vii) atmospheric emissions. The results demonstrated that the primary raw material footprint is about 456 million metric tons (Mt) corresponding to a metabolic rate of 2.2 metric tons/capita (t/capita). After including unused extraction, quarry wastes, water consumption, and secondary materials this value increases to 4.1 t/capita corresponding to a total material consumption of 840 Mt. Concrete and mortar can be produced using two routes—mixing on site or industrial mixing. We conclude that the industrial scenario allows for dematerialization by about 8% for concrete and 24% for mortar, by mass; and the average material use efficiency is low, at about 53% for concrete and 34% for mortar.  相似文献

Exposure of theurinary bladder epithelium of Necturusmaculosus (NUB) to protease and collagenase yields~50% isolated polarized cells. These cells express a membranecurrent slowly activated by depolarization or by removal of externaldivalent cations. The biophysical and pharmacological properties of thecurrent are largely consistent with those of gap junctionalhemichannels. After removal of divalent cations, the cells can also beloaded with 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein, a hydrophilic fluorescent anionic dye, and exposure to dye reduces the current in a manner dependent onmembrane voltage and side of application. In contrast,Necturus gallbladder (NGB) cellsexhibit no membrane conductance attributable to gap junctionalhemichannels, although previous studies reveal the persistence of gapjunction plaques on the plasma membrane. We conclude that functionalgap junctional hemichannels can be expressed on the surface of certainisolated epithelial cells and that this is not a necessary consequenceof the isolation procedure. These structures may contribute to celldamage under pathological conditions involving cell detachment.

Summary The level of auxin - both natural and synthetic — in the medium has a strong effect on the level of 5-methyl-cytosine in the DNA of carrot cells in culture. This level may vary from approximately 15% to 70% of total cytosine without apparent effects on growth rate and cell morphology. No effect was seen with cytokinin. During somatic embryogenesis, in the absence of hormones, variations were seen in the level of methylation according to a characteristic pattern. If hypomethylation is induced with drugs such as azacytidine, ethionine or ethoxy-carbonyl-pyrimidine, embryogenesis is immediately blocked. A mutant was isolated which is resistant to the action of hypomethylating drugs. It shows variations in the methylation pattern and variations in indole-acetic acid metabolism.
