Wet tropical forest trees display a wide range of leaf phenology dynamics. However, the interrelation between deciduousness, water status, and leaf and stem characteristics have been poorly investigated compared with dry forests. We studied wet forest trees to answer the following questions: (1) do water regulation modes (iso/anisohydric behavior) of evergreen species differ from those found in deciduous species? (2) Does leaf water potential (ΨL) influences leaffall and emergence dynamics? (3) Are leaf and stem characteristics consistent across evergreen and deciduous trees? We evaluated vegetative phenology, ΨL, and leaf and stem characteristics of six evergreen and three deciduous species monthly for 2 yr. Species exhibited different leaffall and emergence dynamics, as well as different water regulation modes, independent of their deciduousness. Thus, the relationship between leaf phenology and water regulation behaviors appears to be a species‐specific property rather than a functional group attribute. ΨL had no direct influence on the dynamics of leaffall and/or emergence, indicating that this process is not modulated by water availability alone. Individual groups of evergreen and deciduous species could not be identified using principal component analysis (PCA), but a decoupling was observed in the leaf and stem economics spectra. The lack of an interrelation between deciduousness and iso/anisohydry, as well as the independence of leaf and stem trade‐offs, emphasizes that more systematic measurements of vegetative phenology and ecophysiological characteristics are necessary to advance our knowledge of leaf habit and water regulation behaviors based on the functional traits of wet forest plants.  相似文献

Polymorphisms in chemokine receptors play an important role in the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) to cervical cancer (CC). Our study examined the association of CCR2-64I (rs1799864) andCCR5-Δ32 (rs333) polymorphisms with susceptibility to develop cervical lesion (CIN and CC) in a Brazilian population. The genotyping of 139 women with cervical lesions and 151 women without cervical lesions for the CCR2-64I and CCR5-Δ32 polymorphisms were performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The individuals carrying heterozygous or homozygous genotypes (GA+AA) for CCR2-64I polymorphisms seem to be at lower risk for cervical lesion [odds ratio (OR) = 0.37, p = 0.0008)]. The same was observed for the A allele (OR = 0.39, p = 0.0002), while no association was detected (p > 0.05) with CCR5-Δ32 polymorphism. Regarding the human papillomavirus (HPV) type, patients carrying the CCR2-64Ipolymorphism were protected against infection by HPV type 16 (OR = 0.35, p = 0.0184). In summary, our study showed a protective effect ofCCR2-64I rs1799864 polymorphism against the development of cervical lesions (CIN and CC) and in the susceptibility of HPV 16 infection.  相似文献

The diet, feeding success (prey number and total volume per gut, and maximum prey width) and trophic niche width of the labrisomid blenny Auchenionchus variolosus (Valenciennes, 1836) was studied during its larval development (3.93–17.26 mm standard length). Individuals were collected in October 2012 and October 2013 in nearshore waters (<500 m offshore) from Bahía Valparaíso, central Chile with Bongo nets. When compared to the same length range, larval A. variolosus collected during 2013 showed larger upper jaw‐at‐sizes than those from 2012. This coincided with a reduction in relative importance (%IRI) of the main prey item, copepod nauplii, from ~90 to ~73%. Feeding incidence (FI) was high throughout larval development, varying from 97.3 to 100%, being similar throughout the larval development. Prey items per gut (PIPG) ranged from 0 to 35 prey, showing no differences among years. Total volume per gut (TVPG) was positively correlated with larval length, and at given larval size, TVPG ingested by larval A. variolosus was larger during 2013 (0.0607 mm3) than during 2012 (0.0301 mm3). Prey width range was 47.47–700.94 μm and was positively correlated with standard length (SL). Niche breadth was independent of larval size and did not change during larval development in 2012 or 2013. The study helps to understand the trophic interactions occurring in nearshore waters off rocky reef environments from mid‐latitudes of the Southeast Pacific coasts.  相似文献

In this study, the flowering mechanisms and pollination strategies of seven species of the highly diverse genus Homalomena (Araceae) were investigated in native populations of West Sarawak, Borneo. The floral scent compositions were also recorded for six of these species. The selected taxa belong to three out of four complexes of the section Cyrtocladon (Hanneae, Giamensis and Borneensis). The species belonging to the Hanneae complex exhibited longer anthesis (53–62 h) than those of the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes (ca. 30 h). Species belonging to the Hanneae complex underwent two floral scent emission events in consecutive days, during the pistillate and staminate phases of anthesis. In species belonging to the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes, floral scent emission was only evident to the human nose during the pistillate phase. A total of 33 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in floral scent analyses of species belonging to the Hanneae complex, whereas 26 VOCs were found in samples of those belonging to the Giamensis complex. The floral scent blends contained uncommon compounds in high concentration, which could ensure pollinator discrimination. Our observations indicate that scarab beetles (Parastasia gestroi and P. nigripennis; Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) are the pollinators of the investigated species of Homalomena, with Chaloenus schawalleri (Chrysomelidae, Galeuricinae) acting as a secondary pollinator. The pollinators utilise the inflorescence for food, mating opportunities and safe mating arena as rewards. Flower‐breeding flies (Colocasiomyia nigricauda and C. aff. heterodonta; Diptera, Drosophilidae) and terrestrial hydrophilid beetles (Cycreon sp.; Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) were also frequently recovered from inflorescences belonging to all studied species (except H. velutipedunculata), but they probably do not act as efficient pollinators. Future studies should investigate the post‐mating isolating barriers among syntopically co‐flowering Homalomena sharing the same visiting insects.  相似文献

BackgroundCardiovascular disease has become a major health problem, and it has been associated with both environmental and genetic factors. Studies have shown that the Mediterranean Diet (MeDiet), or its components such as nuts and olive oil, may be strongly associated with the improvement of cardiovascular risk factors in specific populations. The purpose of the GENUTRI study is to investigate the interaction of genetics with cardiovascular risk factors in a non-Mediterranean population with coronary artery disease (CAD) according to three different diets: rich in pecan nuts, in extra-virgin olive oil or a control diet.Methods/designThe GENUTRI study is a single-center, randomized, open-label, parallel-group, 12-week pragmatic clinical trial conducted in patients aged 40 to 80 years and diagnosed with CAD. A standardized questionnaire will be applied to data collection and a blood sample will be obtained for lipid, glycemic and inflammatory profile evaluation. Polymorphisms in the CD36 and STAT3 genes will be detected using the TaqMan® SNP Genotyping Assay. Patients will be allocated in three groups: group 1: 30 g/day of pecan nuts; group 2: 30 ml/day of olive oil; and group 3: control diet. The primary outcome will consist of changes in LDL-cholesterol (in mg/dl) after 12 weeks of intervention.DiscussionStudies have shown the beneficial effects of diets rich in nuts and olive oil mainly in the Mediterranean population. GENUTRI is a clinical trial focusing on the effects of nuts or olive oil supplementation in Brazilian individuals. Additionally, we will try to demonstrate that genetic polymorphisms linked to cardiovascular disease may modulate the effects of different diets on biochemical and inflammatory markers among these subjects.

Development of antifouling strategies requires knowledge of how fouling organisms would respond to climate change associated environmental stressors. Here, a calcareous tube built by the tubeworm, Hydroides elegans, was used as an example to evaluate the individual and interactive effects of ocean acidification (OA), warming and reduced salinity on the mechanical properties of a tube. Tubeworms produce a mechanically weaker tube with less resistance to simulated predator attack under OA (pH 7.8). Warming (29°C) increased tube volume, tube mineral density and the tube’s resistance to a simulated predatory attack. A weakening effect by OA did not make the removal of tubeworms easier except for the earliest stage, in which warming had the least effect. Reduced salinity (27 psu) did not affect tubes. This study showed that both mechanical analysis and computational modeling can be integrated with biofouling research to provide insights into how fouling communities might develop in future ocean conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

A proactive cultivation of Mediterranean broadleaf species, including oaks, has been suggested to fill possible temporal and spatial gaps in forestry created by Climate Change in Central Europe in the future. Climate can affect trees in several different ways, e.g., by modulating the course of leaf senescence. Senescence-associated processes, like regulation of carbohydrates and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence under drought stress conditions were studied with leaf tissue of drought-tolerant downy oak (Quercus pubescens). Two months of consistent drought stress in a frost-free greenhouse led to significantly earlier senescence and significant increased amounts of soluble sugars in the leaves of the drought-stressed group in comparison to a well-watered control group. Similar sugar accumulation was observed in trees outdoors, after exposure to frost. In contrast to monocarpic plants the accumulation of free sugars is neither triggering leaf senescence, nor is it a side effect of age-depending changes in Q. pubescens. Instead, sugar accumulation is induced by abiotical factors, like drought and frost. Furthermore, we suggest that the senescence process in the absence of drought stress or frost depends on the source status of the leaf, which, in term, is a function of light (through photosynthesis) and night temperature (through respiration). Contents of the storage metabolite starch decreased during late summer in all three groups. Drought-stressed plants showed a decline of the connectivity of photosystem II antenna, reflected as the L-band in the chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves, and stronger correlations between the declines in the capacity of photosynthetic dark reactions and electron transport-associated chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. We conclude that the disassembly of single parts of the photosynthetic apparatus during leaf senescence is a uniform process, but the onset of this process depends on abiotical environmental factors.
