Dental caries and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) are investigated in a Classic Maya sample obtained from the sites of Calakmul, Dzibanché, and Kohunlich (Mexico). This study aims at assessing the effect that sex and social status had on the prevalence of oral pathologies. The lack of a direct relationship between caries, AMTL, and age-at-death led us to interpret the results in terms of the biological, socioeconomic, and behavioral conditions prevailing in these ancient Maya settlements. Benefits related to sex and social status are evident in the frequency of carious lesions, which appear less frequently in elite males than in low-status individuals of both sexes and in elite females. Individuals from problematic mortuary contexts and isolated bone assemblages, who could not be ascribed to any status group, showed the highest rates of caries. Sex discrimination in dietary preferences appears in the elite sample, while the homogeneity encountered between sexes in the low-status segment suggests a more uniform access to resources. Tooth loss clearly distinguishes elite individuals from commoners, regardless of sex, with the former bearing a much higher rate of loss. In individuals from the undefined mortuary assemblages and sacrificial contexts, it was even more pronounced than in the other groups, although its interpretation is problematic due to a lack of associated funerary data. The overall evidence from oral pathologies is interpreted to be the result of deficient oral hygiene coupled with a softer and more refined diet in the high-status population, particularly males. Whereas elite males' subsistence was apparently based more on animal proteins and relatively soft and refined foods, a diet relying on carbohydrates may account for the observed rate of oral pathologies in elite females and commoners.  相似文献

The Ellman method for assaying thiols is based on the reaction of thiols with the chromogenic DTNB (5,5'-dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoate) whereby formation of the yellow dianion of 5-thio-2-nitrobenzoic acid (TNB) is measured. The TNB molar absorption coefficient, 13.6 x 10(3)M(-1)cm(-1), as published by Ellman in 1959 has been almost universally used until now. Over the years, however, slightly different values have been published, and it has further been shown that TNB reveals thermochromic properties. This should be taken into account when the Ellman method is used for determination of enzyme activities, such as in cholinesterase assays. Our data show that the absorbance spectra of TNB are shifted to longer wavelengths when temperature increases, while absorbance maxima decrease. Our recommended molar absorption coefficients at 412 nm are 14.15 x 10(3)M(-1)cm(-1) at 25 degrees C and 13.8 x 10(3)M(-1)cm(-1) at 37 degrees C (0.1M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4). Most stingless bee colonies have one singly mated queen, resulting in a potential conflict between workers and queen over male production, because workers are more closely related to the sons of other workers than they are to the queen's sons. Furthermore, workers in the majority of stingless bee species have ovarian development, can produce haploid eggs, and show apparently agonistic behaviour towards their queen, suggesting a real conflict. We investigated whether genetic conflict over male production resulted in reproductive and behavioural conflict in Schwarziana q. quadripunctata. DNA microsatellite loci showed that, even though workers are more related to other workers' sons than to queen's sons, it is the queen who produces the males. Behavioural interactions between workers and their queen were not uniformly more aggressive during male production than at times with only worker production, although some differences might have been obscured by the fact that food supply was greater during male production. The potential conflict over male production inS. q. quadripunctata seems not to lead to an observable conflict between the workers and their queen. Workers might refrain from reproduction because of the costs involved for the colony or because of queen control.  相似文献

Locomotion in Caenorhabditis elegans requires force transmission through a network of proteins linking the skeletal muscle, via an intervening basal lamina and epidermis (hypodermis), to the cuticle. Mutations in mua-6 result in hypodermal rupture, muscle detachment from the bodywall, and progressive paralysis. It is shown that mua-6 encodes the cytoplasmic intermediate filament (cIF) A2 protein and that a MUA-6/IFA-2::GFP fusion protein that rescues the presumptive mua-6 null allele localizes to hypodermal hemidesmosomes. This result is consistent with what is known about the function of cIFs in vertebrates. Although MUA-6/IFA-2 is expressed embryonically, and plays an essential postembryonic role in tissue integrity, it is not required for embryonic development of muscle-cuticle linkages nor for the localization of other cIFs or hemidesmosome-associated proteins in the embryo. Finally, the molecular lesion in the mua-6(rh85) allele suggests that the head domain of the MUA-6/IFA-2 is dispensable for its function.  相似文献

The response of Morimus funereus larvae to total starvation and refeeding with qualitatively different nutritive substrates (artificial diets supplemented with yeast as a source of B complex vitamins or with a digestibility reducer-tannic acid) was examined in this paper. Refeeding resulted in a compensatory increase of larval growth. Feeding and refeeding with qualitatively different nutritive substrates affected both quality and quantity of midgut and brain proteins. The observed differences suggest the possible switching of enzyme isoforms in M. funereus midgut and changes in synthesis/secretion of neurohormones, depending on food presence and its nutritional value.  相似文献

For four temperate lakes (Northeast U.S.A.) we identify periods of persistent phytoplankton assemblages and investigate the ecological conditions that correlate to these persistent assemblages. Periods of persistent assemblages, here considered as steady-state phases, were defined according to equilibrium criteria (two or three coexisting species, contributing to 80% of the standing biomass, for at least 2 weeks) defined by Sommer et al. (1993, Hydrobiologia 249: 1–7). For all four lakes, samples were taken weekly during the ice-free season and phytoplankton attributes (biomass, assemblages, diversity, species richness, change rates) and abiotic variables (temperature, I* – as light mean in the mixing zone – zmix, and nutrients) were analysed. Chodikee (CH), an eutrophic and rapidly flushed lake, did not show any persistent phase. The remaining three lakes showed single steady-state phases that occurred at varying times during the ice-free season. Steady-state phases occurred during early stratification in late spring in the stably stratified oligotrophic Mohonk Lake (MO), in the late summer stratification in the meso-eutrophic Stissing Lake (ST), and during spring mixing in Wononscopomuc Lake (WO). MO showed a 3-week period with dominance of F assemblage (Botryococcus braunii, Willea wilhelmii and Eutetramorus planctonicus), characteristic for clear epilimnia, tolerant to low nutrient and sensitive to high turbidity. For three weeks, ST had a stable assemblage with dominance of Lo(Woronichinia sp.), common assemblage in summer epilimnion of mesotrophic lakes and sensitive to prolonged or deep mixing; and P, assemblage able to live in eutrophic epilimnia with mild light and sensitive to stratification and silica depletion. In contrast, the mesotrophic Wononscopomuc Lake (WO) showed persistent assemblages during a 4-week period of spring circulation, when a dinoflagellate (Lo) was co-dominant with Nitzschia acicularis (C). The latter species is characteristic for mesotrophic lakes, tolerant to low light and sensitive to stratification and silica depletion. Both Lo and P assemblages, among seven others, had before been quoted, in literature, as dominant in maturing stages. We could not find consistent statistical differences between the periods classified as steady-state and non-steady-state. However, the data demonstrated that prolonged period of both mixing and stratification can maintain dominant assemblages. Although, historically sensed as opposite mechanisms, both mixing and stratification, if persistent, were observed maintaining dominant assemblages because both scenarios are characterized by environmental constancy.  相似文献

We found that Lactobacillus reuteri CRL1098, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from sourdough, is able to produce cobalamin. The sugar-glycerol cofermentation in vitamin B(12)-free medium showed that this strain was able to reduce glycerol through a well-known cobalamin-dependent reaction with the formation of 1,3-propanediol as a final product. The cell extract of L. reuteri corrected the coenzyme B12 requirement of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis ATCC 7830 and allowed the growth of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (metE cbiB) and Escherichia coli (metE) in minimal medium. Preliminary genetic studies of cobalamin biosynthesis genes from L. reuteri allowed the identification of cob genes which encode the CobA, CbiJ, and CbiK enzymes involved in the cobalamin pathway. The cobamide produced by L. reuteri, isolated in its cyanide form by using reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography, showed a UV-visible spectrum identical to that of standard cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12).  相似文献

Two of the five known mammalian 5'-nucleotidases show a preference for the dephosphorylation of deoxynucleoside-5'-phosphates. One is a cytoplasmic enzyme (dNT-1), the other occurs in mitochondria (dNT-2). The human mitochondrial enzyme, recently discovered and cloned by us, is encoded by a nuclear gene located on chromosome 17 p11.2 in the critical region deleted in the Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS), a genetic disease of unknown etiology. Looking for a model system to study the possible involvement of dNT-2 in the disease, we have cloned the cDNA of the mouse ortholog. The deduced protein sequence is 84% identical to the human ortholog, has a very basic NH(2)-terminus, a very high calculated probability of being imported into mitochondria and contains the DXDXT/V motif conserved among nucleotidases. Expression in Escherichia coli of the predicted processed form of the protein produced an active deoxyribonucleotidase. We also identified in genomic sequences present in the data base the structures of the murine genes for the cytosolic and mitochondrial deoxyribonucleotidases (Nt5c and Nt5m). PAC clones for the two loci were isolated from a library and used for chromosomal localization by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Both genes map on chromosome 11: Nt5c at 11E and Nt5m at 11B, demonstrating the presence of the dNT-2 locus in the mouse shaker-2 critical region, the murine counterpart of the human SMS region. We performed pair-wise dot-plot and PIP (percent identity plot) analyses of mouse and human deoxyribonucleotidase genes, and found a strong conservation that extends also to some intronic sequences of possible regulatory significance.  相似文献
