Phenol and three nitrophenols (o-nitrophenol, m-nitrophenol, p-nitrophenol), commonly occurring pollutants in natural eco-systems, were tested for their toxic effects on soil isolates of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus bijugatus, growing under phototrophic, photoheterotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. The toxicity criteria included cell number, chlorophyll, total protein and carbohydrate content, 14CO2 uptake and in vivo nitrate reductase activity. Both C. vulgaris and S. bijugatus were sensitive to the pollutants when the cultures were grown under phototrophic or heterotrophic conditions. However, the toxicity was found reversed or alleviated upon photoheterotrophic growth of the cultures. Transmission electron microscope studies revealed various cytological abnormalities in C. vulgaris in the presence of phenolics at algistatic levels. 相似文献

Summary Present studies indicate that leaf could determine the degree of plants' performance and condition the level of unfilled spikelets. Environmental constraints like low light intensity itself can considerably affect the function of the leaf resulting in greater proportion of unfilled spikelets or sterility, which appears to be a post-fertilization problem. This suggests that source (leaf) is unable to cater to the requirements of the panicle. Further, the LAI studies have revealed the existence of a wide gap between spikelet production and grain filling. Panicle-tailoring studies pointed out that sterility could be reduced if panicle size is reduced. In the light of all these evidences, it was concluded that source is limiting at the present level of evolution in rice under Indian conditions. 相似文献

Summary Inoculation of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) with Azospirillum significantly increased the numbers of this organism in the rhizosphere, rhizoplane, washed and crushed roots and surface sterilized and crushed roots. The maximum number of organisms plant–1 were localized in the rhizosphere. The numbers of Azospirillum on the roots of inoculated plants grown under sterilized conditions were much higher than in the field grown plants. In both cases populations outside the roots were higher than in the surface sterilized roots. The highest numbers per unit root weight were recorded between 60–75 days of growth. N2-ase activity throughout the growth cycle was very low and was not related to the populations of Azospirillum on the roots. Root exudates and extracts of pearl millet showed a stimulatory effect on the growth of Azospirillum suggesting their possible involvement in the colonization of this organism on the roots of inoculated plants. 相似文献

Abstract The effect of ketoconazole on growth, sterol composition, in vitro sterol biosynthesis and P450-CO complex formation and its interaction with microsomal P450 was determined. On solid medium and in liquid medium ketoconazole inhibited Aspergillus fumigatus growth completely at 5 × 10−5 M and 50% of the growth at 1.3 × 10−5 M and 2.1 × 10−5 M respectively. A close relationship between accumulation of 14α-methyl sterols (eburicol, obtusifoliol and 14α-methyl fecosterol) and depletion of ergosterol with growth arrest was observed in ketoconazole treated cultures. The half inhibitory concentration for in vitro ergosterol biosynthesis and half saturating concentration for type II binding spectrum of ketoconazole were calculated as 73.8 ± 6.3 nM and 0.13 ± 0.04 μM respectively.
