The life‐history tactics of the stone loach Barbatula barbatula were studied in a Mediterranean‐type climate stream (Matarranya River) located in the Ebro River basin (north‐east Spain). Maximum observed ages were 2+ years in both sexes (1% of individuals), although only 0+ and 1+ year age groups were well represented. It is the lowest longevity reported for this species in its entire distribution. The seasonal growth period started in June and continued until November, but the pattern observed was different to northern populations. Barbatula barbatula in the Matarranya River was a multiple spawner, releasing small batches of oocytes between April and June. The fecundity of females was higher and the size of oocytes smaller in 1984 than in 1985. The relative fecundity (number of ripening and ripe oocytes g?1 of fish) was lower than in northern European populations. The role of the particular environmental conditions of a Mediterranean stream was discussed in relation to the life‐history tactics of B. barbatula. 相似文献

The taxonomic history of the small frogs of the genus Pseudopaludicola from South America has been controversial. Phylogenetic inferences based on molecular data have identified four Pseudopaludicola clades, correlating with the known variation in karyotypes (2n = 22, 20, 18, and 16). In this study, the ultrastructure of the spermatozoa was analyzed in 12 species of the Pseudopaludicola, with the aim of describing their morphology and identifying characters that may contribute to a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships. The spermatozoa presented marked differences in tail structures. The tails of the spermatozoa of the species with 2n = 22 chromosomes (Pseudopaludicola sp. 1 [P. pusilla group], Pseudopaludicola falcipes, P. mineira, and Pseudopaludicola saltica), as well as Pseudopaludicola ameghini and Pseudopaludicola ternetzi (2n=20), have juxta‐axonemal fibers, undulating membranes and axial fibers. In contrast, in the species with 2n = 18 (P. facureae, P. giarettai, Pseudopaludicola canga, P. atragula, and Pseudopaludicola sp. 2) and 2n = 16 (Pseudopaludicola mystacalis), there are no evident axial or juxta‐axonemal fibers, but a paraxonemal rod with a thick undulating membrane, which is shorter than that found among Pseudopaludicola species. The ultrastructural morphological differences observed in the spermatozoa of these species may be phylogenetically informative, given that they coincide with the consensus phylogeny of the group and appear to represent a progressive simplification of the spermatozoon. Summary An Upflow Anaerobic Filter (UAF) treating cheese whey showed a non-homogeneous biomass distribution and COD degradation along the reactor. Higher biomass concentration with a higher methanogenic activity was present in the lower than in the upper part of the filter. In order to increase the methanogenic capacity of the filter, a double-feed system was tested. Soil biofilters and related systems based onthe use of natural filter beds have been usedfor several years for solving specific airpollution problems. Over the past decade,significant improvements have been brought tothese original bioprocesses, among which thedevelopment and use of new inert packingmaterials. The present paper overviews the mostcommon inert packings used in biofiltration ofwaste gases and their major characteristics. Apotential problem recently encountered whenusing inert filter beds is the heterogenousdistribution of biomass on the packingmaterial, and the excessive growth andaccumulation of biomass when treating highorganic loads, eventually leading to cloggingof the biofilter and reduced efficiency.Several strategies that have been proposed forsolving such problems are described in thispaper. Technologies for controlling excessbiomass accumulation can be grouped into fourcategories based on the use of mechanicalforces, the use of specific chemicals, thereduction of microbial growth, and predation. 相似文献
