Sexual differences in the diet of the great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, were studied in four Greek wintering areas, the Amvrakikos Gulf, the Axios and Evros Deltas and the Messolonghi Lagoon,
through the analysis of stomach contents. Great cormorants are birds sexually dimorphic in size, with males being generally
larger than females. Although similar prey species were found in the stomachs of both sexes in all the studied areas, significant
differences were observed with respect to the proportion of species taken. Male birds ate higher proportions of large fish
species such as grey mullets, European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio, while female birds took higher proportions of smaller species such as big-scale sand smelt, Atherina boyeri, and black goby, Gobius niger. As a consequence, male great cormorants were found to feed on significantly larger prey than did females by means of fish

Phytase (myo-inositol-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakisphosphate phosphohydrolase, EC 3.1.3.26), which catalyses the step-wise hydrolysis of phytic acid, was purified from cotyledons of dormant Corylus avellana L. seeds. The enzyme was separated from the major soluble acid phosphatase by successive (NH4)(2)SO(4) precipitation, gel filtration and cation exchange chromatography resulting in a 300-fold purification and yield of 7.5%. The native enzyme positively interacted with Concanavalin A suggesting that it is putatively glycosylated. After size exclusion chromatography and SDS-PAGE it was found to be a monomeric protein with molecular mass 72+/-2.5 kDa. The hazel enzyme exhibited optimum activity for phytic acid hydrolysis at pH 5 and, like other phytases, had broad substrate specificity. It exhibited the lowest Km (162 microM) and highest specificity constant (V(max)/Km) for phytic acid, indicating that this is the preferred in vivo substrate. It required no metal ion as a co-factor, while inorganic phosphate and fluoride competitively inhibited enzymic activity (Ki=407 microM and Ki=205 microM, respectively). 相似文献

Introduction
The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in quality of life and psychosocial stress parameters among patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) and common forms of atrioventricular reentry supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs).Methods and Results
The total study population included 106 patients, 54 patients with paroxysmal AF (32 males, age 56.64±12.50 years) and 52 with SVTs (25 males, age 40.46±14.96 years). General health (p<0.01), physical function (p=0.004), role emotion (p=0.002) and role physical (p<0.01) scores were lower in patients who suffered AF. SF-36 physical and mental health summary measures were also significantly lower in the AF group compared to those in SVT group (p<0.01 and p=0.001, respectively). Lower SF-36 total score was observed in patients with AF compared to those with SVTs (p<0.01). Comparing the anxiety and depression scores all the values were higher in patients with AF. Higher STAI-state scores (p<0.01), STAI-trait scores (p=0.039) and BDI scores (p=0.077) were seen in patients who suffered AF comparing to those with SVTs.Conclusions
Quality of life is significantly impaired and the level of anxiety is significantly higher in patients with AF comparing to those with common forms of SVTs. 相似文献74.

The membership trends and attitudes of a Greek hunting community, the Megara Hunting Club, were determined through the analysis of 408 questionnaires. The number of hunting licences increased from 2003 to 2008, decreasing thereafter, mostly because a proportion of hunters holding a national licence quit hunting. This was in agreement with the onset of the national debt crisis and the concurrent decrease of the gross domestic product. Factor analysis revealed that hunters rather agreed that a ‘systemic’ (mean score 3.48) and rather disagreed that a ‘legal’ (2.59) factor negatively affected the practice of hunting, while they agreed that a ‘game status’ factor (4.06) was important. In particular, they contended that improved hunting administration and stakeholder collaboration are needed (systemic dimension), and game populations have declined due to anthropogenic activities such as illegal hunting, pollution, habitat loss and climate change (game status dimension). Findings suggest that, in the light of the ongoing economic crisis, immediate action should be taken toward the retention of hunters and protection and enhancement of game, through the application of appropriate policy and management measures. 相似文献

The transporting function of many branched tubular networks like our lungs and circulatory system depend on the sizes and shapes of their branches. Understanding the mechanisms of tube size control during organ development may offer new insights into a variety of human pathologies associated with stenoses or cystic dilations in tubular organs. Here, we present the first secreted luminal proteins involved in tube diametric expansion in the Drosophila airways. obst-A and gasp are conserved among insect species and encode secreted proteins with chitin binding domains. We show that the widely used tracheal marker 2A12, recognizes the Gasp protein. Analysis of obst-A and gasp single mutants and obst-A; gasp double mutant shows that both genes are primarily required for airway tube dilation. Similarly, Obst-A and Gasp control epidermal cuticle integrity and larval growth. The assembly of the apical chitinous matrix of the airway tubes is defective in gasp and obst-A mutants. The defects become exaggerated in double mutants indicating that the genes have partially redundant functions in chitin structure modification. The phenotypes in luminal chitin assembly in the airway tubes are accompanied by a corresponding reduction in tube diameter in the mutants. Conversely, overexpression of Obst-A and Gasp causes irregular tube expansion and interferes with tube maturation. Our results suggest that the luminal levels of matrix binding proteins determine the extent of diametric growth. We propose that Obst-A and Gasp organize luminal matrix assembly, which in turn controls the apical shapes of adjacent cells during tube diameter expansion. 相似文献

Dormancy of hazel (Corylus avellana L.) seeds is alleviated by a chilling treatment during which cytological, hormonal, and biochemical changes occur. Phytic acid and phosphate mobilization have been examined during this treatment. Phytic acid accounted for 0.7% and up to 3.2% of dry weight in axiferous and cotyledonary tissue, respectively. Phytic acid levels in embryonic axes were reduced by 60% within the first 3 weeks of chilling, with little subsequent change, in contrast to warm-imbibed tissue where levels did not change significantly. In cotyledons, phytic acid was mobilized to a lesser extent. Phosphate levels expressed on a fresh weight basis remained almost unaltered suggesting either the operation of a homeostatic mechanism for intracellular concentration or rapid utilization due to active metabolism. Phytase activity increased during stratification in both axiferous and cotyledonary tissue. The initial rise observed was associated with dormancy alleviation, since it occurred before the realization of full germination potential by the seeds and not in warm-imbibed tissue. Protein bodies were isolated from hazel seeds by non-aqueous density gradients. Phytase activity was closely associated with the purified organelles, where phytic acid was located by light microscopy. Overall, these findings suggest that phytic acid mobilization by phytase and previously described processes associated with protein bodies, such as considerable proteolysis, are early participants in the plethora of events leading to seed dormancy relief and germination in hazel. 相似文献

Background
The evidence regarding the association between lung cancer and occupational exposure to cement is controversial. This study investigated causes of deaths from cancer of respiratory tract among cement workers.Methods
The deaths of the Greek Cement Workers Compensation Scheme were analyzed covering the period 1969-1998. All respiratory, lung, laryngeal and urinary bladder cancer proportionate mortality were calculated for cement production, maintenance, and office workers in the cement industry. Mortality from urinary bladder cancer was used as an indirect indicator of the confounding effect of smoking.Results
Mortality from all respiratory cancer was significantly increased in cement production workers (PMR?=?1.91; 95% CI 1.54 to 2.33). The proportionate mortality from lung cancer was significantly elevated (PMR?=?2.05; 95% CI 1.65 to 2.52). A statistically significant increase in proportionate mortality due to respiratory (PMR?=?1.7; 95% CI 1.2 to 2.34). and lung cancer (PMR?=?1.67;95% CI?=?1.15-2.34) among maintenance workers has been observed. The PMR among the three groups of workers (production, maintenance, office) did differ significantly for lung cancer (p?=?0.001), while the PMR for urinary bladder cancer found to be similar among the three groups of cement workers.Conclusion
Cement production, and maintenance workers presented increased lung and respiratory cancer proportionate mortality, and this finding probably cannot be explained by the confounding effect of smoking alone. Further research including use of prospective cohort studies is needed in order to establish a causal association between occupational exposure to cement and risk of lung cancer. 相似文献79.

This study was designed to examine the effect of a rhythmic gymnastics program on the rhythm perception of children with deafness. Two groups--control and experiment--of 12 and 17 children, respectively, coming from the same school for the deaf participated in this study. The duration of the program for the individuals in the experiment group was 16 weeks (at a frequency of 3 lessons per week, for 40 minutes each lesson), while children of both groups adhered to their regular school schedules. Five rhythmic patterns in 3 speeds (tempi) were reproduced both by a metronome and each child's performance and were recorded on a digital disk before and after the application of the program. The rate of time deviation (in seconds) between the 2 beats represented the score for each child. The average rate of the 5 rhythmic patterns in each tempo was calculated separately, giving 3 scores (one for every tempo) for each child. Significance was set at p < or = 0.05. The data revealed significant postexercise differences in favor of the experiment group, an improvement of the experiment group in all pre-post values, as well as an improved medium tempo with relation to the control group. The findings show the effectiveness of the specific program in terms of improving rhythm ability, thus indicating its use in educating children with deafness on rhythm instead of preferring the routine of the adapted school program. 相似文献
