Langer-Giedion syndrome and deletion of the long arm of chromosome 8

Summary Reexamination of a previously reported patient with 8q interstitial deletion reveals the development of a tricho-rhinophalangeal syndrome type II (Langer-Giedion syndrome) with multiple exostoses at the age of 4 years. Together with the two previous reports on 8q deletion and TRP II syndrome the present observation strongly supports the causal relationship between TRP II syndrome and 8q deletion.     

Psychological profile and behavioural characteristics in 12 patients with Prader-Willi syndrome.

In the present study medical, psychological and behavioural aspects in 12 patients with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), aged between 13 months and 28 years are presented. In half of the patients the diagnosis of PWS was made before the age of one year. The contribution of cytogenetic investigations with the detection of a 15q11 deletion in half of the PWS patients is discussed. In the evaluation of the intellectual performances IQ levels were spread between 45 and 95 with a mean IQ of 54. A specific behavioral profile in all patients with characteristic fluctuations with age was observed. Rapid changes in behaviour increased with age and after puberty, mostly related with withholding of food. The present study reinforces the importance of early diagnosis in the PWS with adequate and intelligible information towards the parents. It may prevent the dramatic obesity which leads to severe physical problems and psychological burdens in PWS adolescents and adults.     

Urinary excretion of electrolytes during prolonged physical activity in normal man

Nine normal young male students were studied during 2 days of relative rest, during 2 days of physical training and again during the succeeding 2 days of relative rest. Twenty-four hour urine collections showed that sodium and potassium excretion were lower during the exercise days, while urinary aldosterone excretion was increased. No differences in the 24-h urinary excretion of creatinine, calcium, and magnesium were found between the resting and exercise days. Hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and red cell counts were decreased at 14 h and 42 h after exercise; these findings together with the increased serum bilirubin concentration could result from hemolysis. Plasma renin activity, angiotensin II and aldosterone concentration were increased 14 h after exercise but returned to baseline 42 h after exercise. Our data shows that one should take into account previous exercise when interpreting results of certain of these tests.
