Changes are reported of Crataegus-Betula dune woodlands between 1950–1980 from Meijendel, a calcareous coastal dune system near the city of The Hague, The Netherlands, which is used as a water catchment area. It concerns both woodlands in degradation stage and, more common, woodlands on the increase. Changes were recorded with help of successive vegetation maps, air photos and permanent plot observations. Woodland increase usually occurs on places with groundwater at or near the surface, either because of natural circumstances or as a result of artificial groundwater recharge through infiltration as part of the water catchment activities. The management of both types of woodland is discussed.Nomenclature follows Heukels-van der Meijden (1983), Flora van Nederland, 20th ed. Wolters-Noordhoff, Groningen. M-MuLV-specific DNA probes were used to establish the state of integration and amplification of recombinant proviral sequences in Moloney virus-induced tumors of Balb/Mo, Balb/c and 129 mice. The somatically acquired viral sequences contain both authentic M-MuLV genomes and recombinants of M-MuLV with endogenous viral sequences. All reintegrated genomes carry long terminal repeat (LTR) sequences at both termini of their genome. In the preleukemic stage a large population of cells exhibiting a random distribution of reintegrated M-MuLV genomes are seen, but during outgrowth of the tumor, selection of cells occurs leaving one or a few clonal descendants in the outgrown tumor. In this latter stage recombinant genomes can be detected. Although these recombinants constitute a heterogeneous group of proviruses, characteristic molecular markers are conserved among many individual proviral recombinants, lending credence to the notion that a certain recombinant structure is a prerequisite for the onset of neoplasia. The structure of these recombinants shows close structural similarities to the previously described mink cell focus-inducing (MCF)-type viruses.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a model for the development of connections between muscle afferents and motoneurones in the human spinal cord. The model consists of a limb with six muscles, one motoneurone pool, one pooled (Ia-like) afferent for each muscle and a central programme generator. The weights of the connections between the afferents and the motoneurone pools are adapted during centrally induced movements of the limb. The connections between the afferents and the motoneurone pools adapt in a hebbian way, using only local information present at the synapses. This neural network is tested in two examples of a limb with two degrees of freedom and six muscles. Despite the simplifications, the model predicts the pattern of autogenic and heterogenic monosynaptic reflexes quite realistically.  相似文献

We studied the course of early leaf area expansion and specificleaf area (SLA) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) genotypes and tested whether air temperature explainsdifferences in these courses within different environments.Such knowledge can be used to improve crop growth modelling.The relative rate of leaf area expansion (RL) of potato andwheat decreased with thermal time, but was nearly linear upto a leaf area index (L) of 1.0. TheRL (L < 1; mean: 17.9x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of potato showed an interaction betweengenotype and environment, and varied with year. TheRL (L <1; mean: 7.1 x 10-3°C-1 d-1) of winter wheat was lower thanthat of spring wheat (mean: 10.9 x 10-3°C-1 d-1), and bothvaried with year. SLAof potato increased nearly linearly withthermal time from 5 to 15 m2 kg-1at 50% emergence, to 20 to25 m2 kg-1at 155°Cd, and then decreased slightly. The SLAofboth winter and spring wheat began at 16 to 23 m2 kg-1and inmost cases increased slightly with thermal time. In potato,regression parameters of SLAwith thermal time were affectedby environment (management conditions and year) and genotype;in wheat they were affected by environment (year and site).Treatment effects on RLof potato were not correlated with thoseon SLA , and were only partly correlated for wheat. Thereforewe conclude that the early foliar expansion of potato is associatedwith a strong increase in SLA , and not so for wheat. Abstract. Small-scale species frequency and cumulative species frequency were studied in four plots in limestone grassland of the Veronica spicata-Avenula pratensis association on Stora Alvaret on the Baltic island of Öland, Sweden. Species mobility was expressed as increase in cumulative species frequency in 20 subplots of 100 cm2. Observed cumulative frequencies from 1985–1989 in all four plots, and from 1985–1995 in one plot were compared with values following from two null models, a ‘minimal mobility’ model and a random mobility model. In ca. 50 % of the cases the observed cumulative frequency was not significantly different from the random expectation. However, in many such cases the mean annual frequency was either very high or very low. Three ways of calculating the mobility rate are presented though only one is used: (observed cumulative frequency -lowest annual frequency) / expected cumulative frequency. Values × 100 range from 0 to 100. There were slight differences between the four plots which were interpreted in terms of differences in grazing intensity and soil depth. It is stressed that the idea of the Carousel model has never been meant to suggest that all species would show random mobility, which we now quantify, but that species differ in their mobility rate and that the mean rate is much higher than generally realized.  相似文献

The microtopology of the motoneurons involved in protraction and retraction of the proboscis of the blowfly (Calliphora vicina) has been studied. In addition, taste input from the labellar hairs was investigated. As a result of this study it appears that protraction movements are controlled by two while retraction movements are guided by three motoneurons on each side. The neurons in each group apear to be in ipsicontralateral communication with each other. The musculi protractores fulcri (MPF) probably contain a proprioceptive cell group which projects to the MPF motoneurons. It is proposed that the proboscis motor system can be modulated by proprioception as well as by chemosensory labellar input. Neurosecretory cells may be involved in adjusting muscle power.  相似文献

The carbohydrate units of the rat erythrocyte membrane sialoglycoprotein rSGP-4 [Edge, A. S. B., & Weber, P. (1981) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 209, 697-705] have been characterized. All of the carbohydrate of this Mr 19,000 glycoprotein occurs in O-glycosidic linkage to the peptide; following alkaline borohydride treatment and chromatography on Bio-Gel P-2, sialic acid containing oligosaccharides terminating in N-acetylgalactosaminitol were obtained. Their structures were determined by compositional analysis, exoglycosidase digestions, alkaline sulfite degradation, and periodate oxidation. The oligosaccharides were characterized for molecular weight and linkage by direct chemical ionization and gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, respectively. The structures are proposed to be NeuAc alpha 2----3Gal beta 1----3GalNAc-ol, Gal beta 1----3(NeuAc alpha 2----6)GalNAc-ol, NeuAc alpha 2----3Gal beta 1----3(NeuAc alpha 2----6)GalNAc-ol, and NeuAc alpha 2----3Gal beta 1----3(NeuAc alpha 2----3Gal beta 1----4GlcNAc beta 1----6)GalNAc-ol. Two of the N-acetylglucosamine-containing hexasaccharides were present per molecule of rSGP-4 along with two trisaccharides and seven tetrasaccharides.  相似文献

Rabbit alveolar macrophages exhibit a chemiluminescent response which is associated with phagocytosis of zymosan and polystyrene-butadiene particles. The chemiluminescence reaches a peak in 15 to 25 minutes and then gradually diminishes over the next 1 to 3 hours. During the time of maximal light emission there appears to be no actual uptake of particles, but the response is dependent upon the particle concentration. The metabolic inhibitor, DNP (2,4-dinitrophenol), causes a rapid inhibition of the chemiluminescent response. The addition of ATP to the medium prior to exposure of the cells to particles causes the chemiluminescent response to be greatly diminished, i.e., 0.3mM ATP virtually abolishes the response. These experiments suggest that some metabolic response of the cell to phagocytosis is responsible for the chemiluminescence.  相似文献

The localization of the elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) in ultrathin cryosections of E. coli cells was determined with the electron microscope using a highly specific immunological labelling technique. EF-Tu is distributed almost homogeneously throughout the cytoplasm. Although it has often been suggested that EF-Tu could be part of a putative prokaryotic cytoskeleton, we did not find any evidence for supramolecular assemblies, such as fibres or filaments, containing a large amount of EF-Tu. EF-Tu was not observed in association with the outer cell membrane and periplasmic space. A topological relationship with the inner membrane is not apparent in our micrographs. In cells in which the EF-Tu level is raised significantly, the protein piles up in discrete cell regions.  相似文献
