Energy conservation during nitrate respiration in Paracoccus denitrificans

P/2e ratios were calculated from anaerobic chemostat cultures of Paracoccus denitrificans with nitrogenous oxides as electron acceptor. P/2e ratios were calculated, using the Y _ATP ^max values determined for aerobic cultures. When succinate was the carbon and energy source the average P/2e values of the sulphate-and succinate-limited cultures with nitrate as electron acceptor were 0.5 and 0.7, respectively, and of the nitrite-limited culture 0.9. With gluconate as carbon and energy source the average P/2e values of the gluconate-limited with nitrate as electron acceptor and nitrate limited cultures were 0.9 and 1.1, respectively.H⁺/O ratios measured in cells obtained from sulphate-, succinate, nitrite-, gluconate-and nitratelimited cultures yielded respective average values of 3.4, 4.5, 3.5, 4.8 and 6.2 for endogenous substrates. From our data we conclude that sulphate-and nitritelimitation causes the loss of site I phosphorylation. Nitrite has no influence on the maximum growth yield on ATP. We propose that metabolism in heterotrophically grown cells of Paracoccus dentrificans is regulated on the level of phosphorylation in the site I region of the electron transport chain.     

Partial trisomy 14q due to familial t(14q-, 11q+) translocation

Summary A malformed male newborn with partial trisomy for the distal part of the long arm chromosome 14 (14q₂₃14qter) is described. This anomaly arose as a segregation product of a balanced t(14q-, 11q+), translocation in the father.     

Plasma prolactin levels in normal children from birth to adolescence]

Plasma prolactin levels were determined by an homologous radio-immuno assay in normal children: in cord blood, at the first day of life, during childhood and along puberty. 1. In both sexes, there is a very important secretion of prolactin during the neonatal period. 2. Longitudinal studies make obvious a different pattern of plasma prolactin in boys and in girls at puberty.     

The Yale Affiliated Hospital Program in Internal Medicine

In July, 1975, the Departments of Internal Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine and eight community hospitals in southern and western Connecticut formed the Yale Affiliated Hospital Program (YAHP) in Internal Medicine. The YAHP provides a planned and focused program of continuing education for medical staff and housestaff at the affiliated hospitals. Six formats for the over 1,000 rounds, lectures, and conferences given annually are used. The members of the YAHP also cooperate in housestaff and faculty recruiting, evaluation of quality of care and evaluation of the process of continuing medical education itself. This report summarizes the organization, goals and future plans of the YAHP.     

Fructose metabolism in four Pseudomonas species

1. ATP-Dependent phosphorylation of fructose could not be detected in extracts of fructose-grown cells of Pseudomonas extorquens strain 16, Pseudomonas 3A2, Pseudomonas acidovorans and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Instead, phosphorylation of fructose to fructose-1-phosphate was found to occur when cell-free extracts were incubated with fructose and phosphoenolpyruvate. Such an activity could not be detected in cell-free extracts of succinate-grown cells. 2. High levels of 1-phosphofructokinase were found in extracts of the above organisms when growth on fructose. 3. Mutants of Pseudomonas extorquens strain 16 lacking 1-phosphofructokinase were unable to grow on fructose. Revertants to growth on fructose had regained the capacity to synthesize this enzyme, indicating its necessary involvement in fructose metabolism. 4. A survey has been carried out of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism in the species listed above.     

Metabolic interlock between the acetolactate synthase isoenzymes and lysine biosynthesis in Escherichia coli K-12

Summary Some of the strains containing mutations in the genes for the acetolactate synthase isoenzymes are temperature sensitive (ts). Suppression of the acetolactate synthase defect due to one of these mutations suppresses also the ts phenotype; moreover, a genetic cross shows that the two phenotypes cannot be dissociated.The ts phenotype is accompanied by a decreased efficiency of transduction with Pl phage. Observations at the light microscope show formation of abnormal cells. Under specific conditions diaminopimelate stimulates growth and restores normal transduction efficiency. The rate of diaminopimelate formed and excreted by non-growing cells decreases when an acetolactate synthase mutation is present.We give evidence that the ts phenotype is due to an increased formation of lysine from diaminopimelate; this causes a starvation for the latter and therefore cell wall abnormalities. In fact, even at the permissive temperature, the lysine pool is 8x increased in a strain with an acetolactate synthase defect, while a slight decrease in the diaminopimelate pool is observed. Moreover, introduction into a ts strain of a mutation in lysA (the gene coding for diaminopimelate decarboxylase) cures the ts phenotype. Finally among the temperature resistant revertants we found some lysine auxotrophs.     

Bicyclo[3,2,1]octanoid,neolignans from Aniba simulans

Six bicyclo[3,2,1]octanoid neolignans, isolated from the benzene extract of Aniba simulans Allen (Lauraceae) trunk wood, are shown to derive from two basic structures: 1-allyl-8-hydroxy-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7-methyl-3-oxobicyclo[3,2,1]octane, substituted by 4-hydroxy, 4-hydroxy-5-methoxy, 4-methoxy or 4,5-dimethoxy groups; and 1-allyl-8-hydroxy-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7-methyl-4-oxobicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene, substituted by 3-hydroxy or 3-hydroxy-5-methoxy groups. The structural proposals are based on spectral data, interconversions synthesis of a derivative from the known (2R,3S,3aS)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-2-(3′-methoxy,4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran.     

Single cellular origin of somatostatin and calcitonin in the rat thyroid gland

Summary Immunostaining of thin serial paraffin sections has shown that somatostatin is present in the same parafollicular cells as calcitonin in the adult rat thyroid gland. The number of cells containing both peptides is much smaller than the number containing calcitonin but not somatostatin.
