Environmental conditions experienced early in the ontogeny can have a strong impact on individual fitness and performance later in life. Organisms may counteract the negative effects of poor developmental conditions by developing compensatory responses in growth and development. However, previous studies on compensatory responses have largely ignored the effects that poor embryonic conditions could have during the later life stages. In this study, we examined the effects of artificially delayed development in early life over two later life history transitions by investigating the compensatory growth of larval moor frogs Rana arvalis in response to temperature variation during embryonic development, and the associated costs during the larval ′and postmetamorphic stages. Low temperature during embryonic stage lead to delayed hatching at smaller size. The groups with delayed embryonic development showed strong compensatory growth during the larval stage, and reached similar metamorphic size than the controls in a shorter time. However, the most strongly delayed group was not able to fully catch up the total development time. These compensatory responses were found in the absence of photoperiod cues indicating that the delay in embryonic development was sufficient to initiate the compensatory response in larval growth and development. No apparent costs of compensatory growth were detected in terms of morphology or locomotor performance at the juvenile stage. We found that compensatory responses can be activated as early as at the embryonic stage and extend over several consecutive life history transitions, mitigating the effects of poor conditions experienced early in development. Potential short‐term costs in natural environments and the occurrence of long‐term costs, which prevent the generalisation of a faster larval life style, are discussed. 相似文献

We followed a long-term (up to 503 days) microbial mineralization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from lake water in a bioassay and described the kinetics of biodegradation with a new model based on a reactivity continuum approach. The biodegradability of DOC was expressed as the probability of biodegradation, which was assumed to follow a beta distribution. We compared the performance of our beta model to five earlier models: the simplest first order kinetic model, two G models, the power model and the gamma model. The simplest first order kinetic model described the decreasing microbial mineralization of DOC poorly (r 2 = 0.73), but the other models explained the observed kinetics of biodegradation well (r 2 > 0.95). When we assessed the extrapolation power of models beyond the length of the bioassay by reducing the amount of data, the predictive power of the G models was poor. Instead, the beta model predicted the biodegradation kinetics consistently and correctly based on even only three observations in time. The beta model provided also long-term predictions (up to 5,000 years) along the observed long-term mineralization trajectory of organic carbon in sediments. Additionally, the beta model formulated the biodegradability continuum of DOC, which was skewed towards low biodegradability. During the bioassay, the skew towards low biodegradability increased as the most biodegradable parts of DOC were consumed. The beta model describes the biodegradability continuum quantitatively and can predict biodegradation in a realistic manner, thus, improving our understanding about the biodegradability and the role of natural organic matter in the environment. 相似文献

The capacity of populations to respond adaptively to environmental change is essential for their persistence. Isolated populations often harbour reduced genetic variation, which is predicted to decrease adaptive potential, and can be detrimental under the current scenarios of global change. In this study, we examined climatic adaptation in larval life history traits in the pool frog Rana lessonae along a latitudinal gradient across the northern distribution area of the species, paying special attention to the isolated and genetically impoverished fringe populations in central Sweden. Larvae from eight populations within three geographic areas (Poland, Latvia and Sweden) were reared under three temperatures (19, 22 and 26°C) in a common garden laboratory experiment. We found clear evidence for latitudinal adaptation in R. lessonae populations, larvae from higher latitudes growing and developing faster than low‐latitude ones. Larvae from the Swedish populations were able to compensate for the effects of cooler temperatures and a shorter growth season with genetically higher growth and development rates (i.e. countergradient variation) in the two higher temperature treatments, but there was no difference among the populations at the lowest temperature treatment, which is likely to be close to the temperature limiting growth in R. lessonae. Our results demonstrate that isolated and genetically impoverished populations can be locally adapted, and identify the Swedish fringe populations as a significant conservation unit adapted to the northern environmental conditions. 相似文献

Nonlethal tail injury resulting from unsuccessful predation attempts is common in anuran larvae and can potentially induce significant fitness costs in terms of survival and growth. We tested the hypotheses that the alien red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is an important inducer of tail injury in tadpoles of the Iberian spadefoot toad, Pelobates cultripes, and that tail damage can have important consequences for the tadpoles’ life history and morphology. This was investigated by first estimating frequencies of caudal injury in P. cultripes tadpoles in temporary ponds, with and without crayfish. Secondly, we performed a laboratory experiment in which four levels of tail injury frequency were combined with two levels of food availability.The frequency of tadpoles with damaged tails was higher in ponds with crayfish and the presence of this predator was the strongest predictor of tail injury frequency in a pond. Induced tail loss decreased larval survivorship and affected tail morphology, with injured tadpoles developing deeper tail muscles and shallower tail fins. The magnitude of these effects depended on injury frequency, as well as on food availability. The results suggest that P. clarkii is inflicting tail injuries at much higher levels than those occurring before its introduction; these injuries affect tadpole morphology and may induce delayed fitness costs. 相似文献

The mode of inheritance of six enzyme markers in the octoploid alpine plant Cerastium alpinum was analyzed. Offspring from crosses between heterozygotes showed fixed heterozygosity at malate dehydrogenase-2, phosphoglucoisomerase-2, triosephosphate isomerase-2, and triosephosphate isomerase-3. Phosphoglucomutase-1 also showed fixed heterozygosity except in offspring from one cross. Fixed heterozygosity in five enzyme systems suggests that C. alpinum has originated through at least some allopolyploidization. Offspring from plants heterozygous for two alleles at the menadione reductase-1 (Mr-1) locus did not deviate significantly from a 1:2:1 ratio. The large proportion of homozygotes suggests disomic inheritance because any kind of polysomic inheritance would result in a substantially increased proportion of heterozygotes relative to disomic inheritance. Assuming a diploid model for Mr-1, this locus was used to analyze the population genetic structure within C. alpinum populations. Inbreeding was found in many alpine populations. This may help explain the large genetic distances found among alpine populations in a previous study. The analysis is only based on one segregating locus, and the results should therefore be treated with caution. However, by establishing the mode of inheritance through crosses, we have been able to use a codominant marker in population genetic analysis of an octoploid plant. 相似文献

Parasites have a variety of harmful effects on their hosts, some of which may be overlapping or complementary and thus easily overlooked but which are still important for the overall severity of infection. We investigated the effect of Diplostomum sp. eye fluke infection on the size of the eye lens in a range of wild and farmed fish species and those exposed to controlled parasite infection. We found that asymmetry in intensity of infection between the right and left lens of an individual fish affected lens size such that the lens with the higher intensity of infection was smaller. Interestingly, however, this was observed only in 3 of the 10 species studied (whitefish, smelt and sea trout) although in these 3 species the effect had already became evident at low intensities of infection. Furthermore, the average lens size was significantly smaller in experimentally exposed whitefish Coregonus lavaretus with a higher intensity of infection than the controls, emphasising the sensitivity of this species to parasite-induced changes in lens size. Reduction in lens size may contribute to the deleterious effects of cataract formation by intensifying the effects of individual parasites in the lens. It may also directly affect the overall optical performance of the lens and already impair host vision at low intensities of infection. 相似文献

Thirteen middle-aged women and 10 men walked 344 km during 7 days. The daily walking distances were 57, 53, 67, 53, 41, 36, and 37 km at an average speed of 3.5 km X h-1. During the hike the subjects drank water, mineral drinks, and juices ad libitum. Except for some natural products, no food intake was allowed. During the hike the body weight and serum protein concentration of the subjects decreased by about 7%, on average. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol decreased drastically, about 30-40% during the hike, but HDL-cholesterol showed a tendency to increase, giving a 40% increment in HDL/total cholesterol ratio. Serum free fatty acids rose 1.5-2 times above the starting level. Serum glucose and evening insulin levels decreased significantly during the hike. Serum cortisol in evening samples after the daily walking and plasma norepinephrine concentrations were significantly increased, reflecting the immediate daily response to the combined fasting and walking. Serum testosterone levels decreased in men but not in women, indicating the involvement of the LH-testis pathway in the decrease obtained. Serum ASAT activity rose to about three times the starting level during the hike, whereas gamma-GT activity gradually decreased. These marked metabolic changes caused by combined fasting and several days exercise were in many respects (as in cholesterol, HDL/total cholesterol ratio or testosterone levels) more pronounced than those earlier reported to be caused by exercise or fasting alone. 相似文献

In natural conversation, the minimal gaps and overlaps of the turns at talk indicate an accurate regulation of the timings of the turn-taking system. Here we studied how the turn-taking affects the gaze of a non-involved viewer of a two-person conversation. The subjects were presented with a video of a conversation while their eye gaze was tracked with an infrared camera. As a control, the video was presented without sound and the sound with still image of the speakers. Turns at talk directed the gaze behaviour of the viewers; the gaze followed, rather than predicted, the speakership change around the turn transition. Both visual and auditory cues presented alone also induced gaze shifts towards the speaking person, although significantly less and later than when the cues of both modalities were available. These results show that the organization of turn-taking has a strong influence on the gaze patterns of even non-involved viewers of the conversation, and that visual and auditory cues are in part redundant in guiding the viewers’ gaze. 相似文献

Distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC)/cholesterol/distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DSPE)–polyethylene glycol 5000 [PEG(5000)] lipid disks, mimicking biological membranes, were used as pseudostationary phase in partial filling electrokinetic capillary chromatography (EKC) to study interactions between pharmaceuticals and lipid disks. Capillaries were coated either noncovalently with a poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone)-based copolymer or covalently with polyacrylamide to mask the negative charges of the fused-silica capillary wall and to minimize interactions between positively charged pharmaceuticals and capillary wall. Although the noncovalent copolymer coating method was faster, better stability of the covalent polyacrylamide coating at physiological pH 7.4 made it more reliable in partial filling EKC studies. Migration times of pharmaceuticals were proportional to the amount of lipids in the pseudostationary phase, and partition coefficients were successfully determined. Because the capillary coatings almost totally suppressed the electroosmotic flow, it was not practical to use the EKC-based method for partition studies involving large molecules with low mobilities. Hence, the applicability of the biomembrane mimicking lipid disks for interactions studies with large molecules was verified by the quartz crystal microbalance technique. Biotinylated lipid disks were then immobilized on streptavidin-coated sensor chip surface, and interactions with a high-molecular-mass molecule, lysozyme, were studied. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation were used to clarify the sizes of lipid disks used. 相似文献
