Male schizophrenia patients are known to have a heavier smoking pattern compared with the general population. However, the mechanism for this association is not known, though hypothesis that smoking could alleviate symptomatology of schizophrenia and reduce side effects of antipsychotics has been suggested. The aims of this study were to validate the heavier smoking pattern among male schizophrenia patients and to investigate the possible mechanisms for the association. To enhance the reliability of the study, we recruited two large independent samples with 604 and 535 male Chinese schizophrenia patients, and compared their smoking pattern with that of 535 healthy male controls recruited from general population. Validated multiple indicators and multiple causes structure equation model and regression models were used to investigate the association of smoking with factors of schizophrenia symptomatology and with the usage of antipsychotics and their extra-pyramidal side effects (EPS). Schizophrenia patients had significantly heavier smoking pattern compared with healthy controls in our sample (42.4% vs. 16.8%, p<0.001 for current smoking prevalence; 23.5% vs. 43.3%, p<0.001 for smoking cessation rate; 24.5% vs. 3.0%, p<0.001 for heavy smoker proportion). Their smoking status was also found to be consistently and significantly associated with reduced negative factor scores for schizophrenia symptomatology (β = −0.123, p = 0.051 for sample-A; β = −0.103, p = 0.035 for sample-B; β = −0.082, p = 0.017 for the combined sample). However, no significant association was found between smoking and antipsychotics usage or risk of EPS. These results support that smoking is associated with improved negative symptoms, which could account for the heavier smoking pattern among schizophrenia patients.  相似文献

Newly synthesized eukaryotic membrane proteins must be integrated into the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum with the correct topology to enable the subsequent acquisition of the correctly folded, functional conformation. Here, an analysis is presented of N-terminal glycosylation and steady-state membrane orientation of a series of truncation mutants of the sevenhelix protein rhodopsin expressed in COS-1 cells. Mutants containing one, three, or five N-terminal transmembrane segments of rhodopsin, as well as mutants containing only the first transmembrane segment, but with hydrophilic extensions at the C-terminus were studied. The findings demonstrate that the C-terminal transmembrane segments play a crucial role in determining the final orientation of rhodopsin, and that the commitment to the correct orientation occurs only after the synthesis of at least three transmembrane segments. The experiments also suggest that the molecular machinery involved in the integration of a newly synthesized seven-helix membrane protein into the endoplasmic reticulum membrane is sensitive to the overall hydrophobicity of the sequence that follows the first transmembrane segment.  相似文献

The bio-efficacy of Aloe vera leaf extract and bacterial insecticide, Bacillus sphaericus larvicidal activity was assessed against the first to fourth instars larvae of Aedes aegypti, under the laboratory conditions. The plant material was shade dried at room temperature and powdered coarsely. A. vera and B. sphaericus show varied degrees of larvicidal activity against various instars larvae of A. aegypti. The LC50 of A. vera against the first to fourth instars larvae were 162.74, 201.43, 253.30 and 300.05 ppm and the LC90 442.98, 518.86, 563.18 and 612.96 ppm, respectively. B. sphaericus against the first to fourth instars larvae the LC50 values were 68.21, 79.13, 93.48, and 107.05 ppm and the LC90 values 149.15, 164.67, 183.84, and 201.09 ppm, respectively. However, the combined treatment of A. vera + B. sphaericus (1:2) material shows highest larvicidal activity of the LC50 values 54.80, 63.11, 74.66 and 95.10 ppm; The LC90 values of 145.29, 160.14, 179.74 and 209.98 ppm, against A. aegypti in all the tested concentrations than the individuals and clearly established that there is a substantial amount of synergist act. The present investigation clearly exhibits that both A. vera and B. sphaericus materials could serve as a potential larvicidal agent. Since, A. aegypti is a container breeder vector mosquito this user and eco-friendly and low-cost vector control strategy could be a viable solution to the existing dengue disease burden. Therefore, this study provides first report on the mosquito larvicidal activity the combined effect of A. vera leaf extract and B. sphaericus against as target species of A. aegypti.  相似文献

The challenges of various biotic and abiotic stresses can imperil the growth of micropropagated plantlets either direct or indirectly. Hence, in this study, a mutual relationship was established between diazotrophs and micropropagated plantlets to enhance plant growth and development. Artificial symbiosis was created for different inoculums of Herbaspirillum seropedicae (Z78), namely sonicated cells, broth culture, and pellet cells with micropropagated oil palm plantlets Elaeis guineensis Jacq. Results reveal significant differences on root volume, total protein content, and Brix value for Z78 broth culture treatment compared with plantlets treated with 25% N. High nitrogenase enzyme activities (6.7?×?10?4?µmol?C2H4 g?1?h?1) and indole-3-acetic acid production (205.21?µmol (g?FW)?1) were also detected on roots of plantlets treated with Z78 broth culture. These beneficial traits reviewed that the application of diazotrophs (Z78) in associative manner for micropropagated plantlets hold vast potential for promoting plant growth and plant’s healthiness.  相似文献
